I have suggested on this Forum that it might be interesting to have a thread of trips that Members have experienced. This can be done easily by posting a message with an *.est file attached. Marvin has been kind enough to enable attaching *.est files up to the size of 3Mb which should be big enough for a few laps of North America.

This sort of trip-sharing may be useful for some in planning their own itineraries or it may just be an opportunity have a voyeuristic giggle at someone else's nutty idea of a good trip. Either way, I hope this is a bit of fun.

Should you have concerns about privacy, you can adjust the route points to reflect general locales or towns rather than including specific personal and private addresses. This shouldn't be necessary for public places such as Subway restaurants along the way or hotels. It might be nice, however, if a certain amount of specifics are included such as if you pulled over for a snooze at a certain rest-stop you might reflect that as a Stop with details on a Pushpin, if possible.

This might lead to exchanging qualitative observations about various places along the way such as saying the beds were lumpy in a particular hotel or the Lancaster Air Museum in Nanton, Alberta is definitely worth a detour.

I am following this with a few messages with individual trips to try to kick things off.

I hope this is something of interest to the Membership.

N. B. If you would like to join me in posting a favourite trip, be sure to have at least one character typed into the body of the message as well as the attachment.

Harry, thanks for making your posting to the "Library." It looks like an interesting trip!

I was hoping that people would post proposed trips, like you have done here, as well as past trips. In this way, perhaps other Members can comment on your route with constructive ideas or observations or recommendations for things such as hotels, restaurants, or other possible stops.

Good luck with the trip.

I'm new here, but not to S&T. It would help if, when posting your *.est file, you also post the version it was created with. It looks like all trips posted so far are in the 2009 version, which I don't have yet, so I can't open them.

Marvin, thanks. This is a great idea, and I'll post a few of mine over the next few days.
SpadesFlush
I hope this is not too dependent on application vintages as Bob suggests. I do not know about S&T 2009 but, before that, things were backward compatible. For instance, something done on S&T 2005 could be opened by S&T 2007.

All of mine are done on S&T 2007, so I would be interested to know if you cannot read them.
Marvin Hlavac
SpadesFlush, big thanks for starting this Streets & Trips Library of Member Trips . I think it's an awesome idea, and I truly hope people will find it a useful resource. I'm looking forward to seeing many people contributing their files.

bobhatch, welcome to Laptop GPS World. It is honor to have you here, Bob. Many people are familiar with your name from various RV-related online communities.

S&T 2009 is still very new, so many people still use older versions. Any version of Streets and Trips is able to open files saved in an older S&T version, but not the other way around. A file saved in a new S&T will not be opened by an older version of the program.

I'd say everyone is welcome to post a file saved in any version of S&T. If someone already uses v2009, I suspect it would be quite inconvenient for them to try to re-do the whole trip all over again in an older file.
Ken in Regina
Hi Marvin,

I think bobhatch's suggestion is an excellent one. He was not suggesting to post in older versions. He simply asked that everyone who posts a trip make a note in their message what version of S&T it was created in.

That will save a lot of frustration when someone tries to open one that was created in a newer version than they have. If you have an older version, you won't waste your time trying to look at something that you know won't work.

I think now is the perfect time to start that as the standard way of doing it, before we get too many posted. It would be great if Spadesflush would go back and edit the ones he has posted to include the S&T version in each of the attach messages. That will make it clear that it's the desired standard way of doing it. All the attach message needs is a short bit of text added, like "S&T 200x".

Respectfully,

...ken...

Marvin Hlavac
Ken, you are correct, Bob's suggestion is a very good one. A simple (S&T 2007) or (S&T 2009) right after the Trip Title would be very much appreciated.

bobhatch
Marvin, thanks, that's exactly what I was suggesting. I have 2006 and 2008, but when I try to open the posted trip files, I get an error, which tells me they are most likely in S&T 2009. I know I can open any older version, but nothing newer than 2008 until I chase some moths out of my wallet.

I'll also have to check and see how big my files are. I save my trips using the GPS trail, so they tend to get a bit big, like a years trips can be over 5 megs. If I have to, I'll break them up into a couple of trips.

Thanks again.
Marvin Hlavac
Bob, but if you decide you do want to post the large file without breaking it to smaller pieces, just let me know. I can increase the *.est attachment limit with only a few mouse clicks.

I currently have v2008 and v2009 installed. I opened all of these files in my v2008. The program notified me the files had been saved in an older version, and they required conversion to v2008. I wonder if you tried to open them in v2006 instead of v2008. They have been saved in v2007.
bobhatch
Yup, that was the problem. For some reason when I told the "puter" to open the file, it was defaulting to 2006 to open the files. I opened 2008, and then selected a file, and it opened fine. The splash screen was moving too fast for me to notice it was 2006 until I really paid attention.

I'll let you know about the big files.
Marvin Hlavac
Bob, I think a possible reason why clicking an *.est file opens S&T 2006 is that v2006 might have been installed last (after v2008 was installed).

If you want to change this behavior, I think it can be accomplished easily by going to Control Panel => Default Programs => Associate file type with a program => .est => Change Program => choose v2008, if that's the version you want to be the default version to open *.est files when you click on them.

I was born and raised in Edmonton, Alberta. My grandparents lived in Leathbridge, Alberta. Stopping to visit the "Bomber museum" was a given every time we passed throught Nanton was just a given, not a detour. My cousin was married On Nov 10 1999 In Cardston ALberta. On the 11, Remeberance day we had lunch with my dads uncle who was a mid upper gunner on a Lanc and then visited the museum on the way home. A cool way to spend Remeberance Day.

Vancouver, Canada to Beijing, China (S&T 2007)

Here is a trip I did a couple of years ago that is a little different than most S&T trips. On a trip to Beijing China, I took my laptop with Streets & Trips along. As my battery would not enable me to run Streets & Trips for the entire 14 hour flight what I did was turn it on every hour or so to get a position, ground speed, track and altitude fix. The crew had no problem with my using the system as long as it was turned off during take off and landing. I only used it once in China 'though as the little Hyundai taxis were too tight. The file is S&T 2007. I connected the spot positions with an orange line. The black line shows the direct GC route I put in before the trip with pushpins for latitude. Some positions fro the return trip.

(For those who are curious about the black line, "GC" stands for "Great Circle". The shortest distance between two points on the face of a globe is a portion of a circle, not a straight line. Check it out on Wikipedia.)

Thanks for sharing that, Al. It shows the great circle route as nearly a straight line as you would expect to see it on a globe and, when you pan west to see the whole thing, it pivots the display around the North Pole. Neat!

In Streets & Trips 2009, we can go to Tools => Options => Map => Show globe view... This nicely shows the line.
Al Nelson
"Globe View" works in my Streets & Trips 2007 also.
Marvin Hlavac
Al, yes, but in v2009 the feature is now buried in Options, and I couldn't resist to tell the world where to find it.

June '06 trip.

Dates labeled, sites indicated.

Trip took 3 weeks.

Charleston,SC to Las Vegas, Salt Lake City, Utah National Parks, 4 Corners NM, Mesa Verde Co, Dodge City KS, St. Louis Arch.

Hope I did this right.

Map is probably converted to S&T '08.

I tried to upload the GPS trailed save, but apparently its too big.

Trip from Chas, SC to Tom's River, NJ via NC Outer Banks and Cape May Ferry Boats.

We didn't get to Punxatawney, PA, the Aunt, who was to go with us, was sick when we got to Tom's River.

GPS trails on Ferry Boats are interestingly different than the published routes.

I believe this one has also been converted to S&T'08.

I just got '09 and have not converted these, I don't think.

October '05 Trip from Chas, SC to OKC Memorial, Painted Desert, Las Vegas, Death Valley, Zion National Park, Tombstone AZ, San Antonio, among others.

Our first GPS antenna was in a lousy location on a 17" laptop literally on my wife's lap for the first several days, so reception was sketchy and eventually the laptop was sentenced to baggage... but the trip was a good plan.

Probably in S&T '08

Trip we take pretty routinely from Charleston, SC area to Pigeon Forge/Gatlinburg, TN area.

Its a nice single day trip to get away from the heat of the Coast to the low mountains of the Blue Ridge, usually for a weekend or a little more.

Its beautiful in the winter time, too, with not an overabundance of snow.

I'm pretty sure this is in S&T '08.

Not a trip per se, but an example of how I use S&T (2008).

Attached is a map I sketched of one midwestern power company's system - they started operation in 1909 and this is a snapshot of their system after their first 10 years. The thin black lines outside the area of pushpins and lines shows the company's territorial coverage as of today (and the donut hole therein, which another investor-owned utility occupies).

It's not actually transparent; I don't know of a way to layer color over terrain with transparency (another Wish List request??). What I did was to push the color zone behind the roads (right-click, Order, Send Behind Roads). I chose the light yellow so that it was near the terrain color scheme.

Both these are cool!

How did you locate the pushpins; latitude and longitude? I assume they are not road-oriented.
LineChaser
Manually - used a few maps for reference, also Street View in Google Maps, and in a few areas, actually driving down back roads to pick up the last few bits of information. The different colors used are to differentiate the various voltages (or to denote 'historic' alignments in a few areas). The voltages represented in this map run the gamut from 2400 volts all the way to 115,000 volts (the latter are shown only where the line in question replaced a lower voltage line as most of those and higher voltage lines tend to run cross country otherwise)

Anyone else out there have an unique use for S&T?

First post on this forum, so might as well make it worthwhile.

Two trips of many that I have used Streets & Trips for. Normally most routes are inside the great State of Texas. As a lot of people know, you need a mapping program in this state.

#1 from Lubbock, TX to Moab, UT and back - Vehicle 2005 Miata
#2 from Lubbock, TX to Lake Havasu, AZ - retrace same route back - Three motorhomes.
Both in S&T 2006

Enjoy

This is really a "frankenroute" stitched together from 3 different motorcycle trips I've taken from St. Louis to the Pacific coast. It's designed to focus on roads that are twisty, scenic, or desolate. Sometimes all 3. Freeways are mostly avoided. I drew circles around the best bits.

SpadesFlush, thanks for sharing this one. I bet once you use the rename stops feature in the Route planner, you get hooked, and you will never ever want to go back into planning a trip with AutoRoute (or Streets and Trips) older than version 2010!
SpadesFlush
For sure! That is not to say there is no scope for improvement, though.

New to the forum - first post. I have been an MSST user for several years, starting with 2006, then 2008, now 2010. Unlike most of you, I rarely use MSST for planning auto trips, rather it's the source program for bicycle routes. I do the maps/cue sheets for an area bike club, plus our weekly rides in a regular riding group. I have also started an electronic database of 'rideable' roads in the Chicagoland area using the highlighter with distances turned off. Once routes are planned, I typically copy readable portions of the map to MS Excel and stitch them together, along with arrows, notes, blow-up details etc. Any other users like me, let me know and maybe we can exchange ideas.

I have Delorme Topo as well, and I use the grades from that as an object, as you'll see in the example. Is it possible to do grades from MSST? Not a lot of call for it in the Chicagoland area, pretty much flat here, but it's a nice feature. Attached example is the original source file and the pdf which is still under construction. The final file is in MS Excel, but the pdf version was done using Mac-Excel, which never turns out as nice as the real thing.

S&T doesn't do hill grades, I was thinking more from local knowledge. But no problem. I used to live and cycle in Park Ridge and, come to think of it, I can't remember any hills.

*.est files have to be just as S&T saves them. You can't fool Mother Nature by tacking on a more friendly-looking file extension. I don't think the Forum accepts *.xls files. So, if you want to post examples, just attach the map *.est file.
Marvin Hlavac
...or you could attached *.xls, or any other type of file, inside a *.zip. :-)

I think the point is if you stick with the real extensions, the reader does not have to save and modify them (eg changing extension or unzipping). They can just click on them and S&T (or some other navigation program) will open.

That's true, Terry. I'm open to suggestions. But I'm not sure if I want to add file extensions such as xls or doc, since such files may potentially carry harmful macros. I know the likelihood of someone at this forum intentionally uploading such file is very remote, but still I don't think I would feel comfortable with it.

But, as you acknowledge in your prior post, such a malicious perpetrator could do it by putting it in a zip file, so I am not sure there is any real protection except very astute moderation.

The thing is, Excel spreadsheets are becoming more important to the members of the forum now that mapping data has become more exportable.

Very impressive. I also avoided Freeways, take twisty and scenic roads. I would need to paste many road trips to cover the same area. The Ferndale Ca to the coast is a beautiful road with very little traffic and many twisties. The drive up to Mount Tamalpais Ca very good scenic drive with lots of twisties. Spectacular route! Was all of that paved? Some of those offshoots look pretty goaty...

I've ridden much of that here and here, but I missed much of it too! Your detours off the PCH have me salivating to get back...

I only take paved road. If it was not for the motorcycle web site, I would have turned around but the Motorcycle web site said 100 yards of gravel south of Honeydew on Wilder Ridge road.

I wish maps had more information about paved road. Many times I call the ranger station in that area about the roads and they always know because they drive them all the time.

Please see the attached map that was created in S&T 2007 but modified in S&T 2010. I took the trip before S&T 2010 was available. This might be obvious from the editable GPS trail, which is not available in 2010.

A great feature of S&T is the capability of putting hyperlinks into Pushpin balloons. I used this feature to link my photos on Flickr to the places where I took the photos. Finally, I created a camera icon for the Pushpin set (I didn't like the one supplied on S&T).

This route was created in the then-current version of AutoRoute, up-dated sequentially in AR 2007 and AR 2010, finally taking advantage of the many more POIs built into AR 2010. As helpful as AutoRoute was at the time, it would have been great to have 2010 with its rich library of POIs and GPS capabilities on my UMPC.

Thanks for sharing this with us, Mickey. Although it is a lot of miles, your pace is reasonably conservative so it should not be too arduous.

Here is, if I may, a little suggestion to make the days of the Driving Directions conform with the calendar dates. Add a dummy stop right at the beginning by copying your start (Lubbock) and inserting it as a new Stop. Then schedule that new Stop to stop for 7 nights. Then the days of the Driving Directions will be the same as the calendar. For instance, it will show you leaving Lubbock on the 8th and arriving in Nashville on the 16th.

Have a great trip!

Thanks - great tip -

I've been planning a cross country trip via the Lincoln Highway and Route 66.

I've finally finished the Lincoln Highway portion (generally, it's the 1928-30 route) I'm only traveling as far as Ohio, so it's not complete to NYC. But it does start at the original west coast marker at the Berkeley pier and goes east.

The maps are somewhat messy in terms of stops in order to keep the route on the old Lincoln Highway and in terms of mileage/day.

Still, with the hope it's of use to others, here are the first five "days".

And here are the final days of the Lincoln Highway mapping finishing in Ohio.

Brent, this looks like an excellent trip.

Right now, your trip plan is nice and economical in detail. You might visit some POI websites so that you can embellish the route with stops along the way. At the very least, you will need food and fuel stops along the way and POI downloads converted to Pushpins that are then converted to stops can really enhance your navigating.

If you are planning to take photos along the way (old route markers??), you can then attach those as links inserted as Pushpins so that you have a complete record of the trip when completed.

Thanks for the suggestions, which I'll use when planning my trip.

I only posted that to provide a Streets & Trips map for the Lincoln Highway (something which I couldn't find elsewhere) - not meant to be an actual trip with stops - just a bare map of the Highway. There are maps by state put out by The Lincoln Highway Association and they have CD for use with DeLorme, but nothing that converted well to Streets & Trips.

I'll be working on Route 66 next (since I can't find an Streets & Trips trip for that).

Neat trip! I also have the Lincoln Highway disease. I have hopes of getting time some year to ride it one way, then come back Hwy 50 the other way.

Coupla things... thought the route used to involve a ferry at the Berkeley Pier, the western terminus is in SF. It's in Lincoln Park, near the Palace of the Legion of Honor.

Another thing is I recommend you get the book "Lincoln Highway Companion" by Brian Butko. Here's a review I wrote about it for a motorcycle site:
Quote:
Brian Butko, author of Greetings from the Lincoln Highway has a new book out called Lincoln Highway Companion.

Though its 192 pages are filled with great full-color photos on quality paper, this is no coffee table decoration designed to give you something to flip through during commercials.

It’s the ultimate detailed authority on the current and historical alignments of the Lincoln Highway, conveniently sized to fit in a tank bag or glove box (just over 8×5″).

Every mile of the Lincoln Highway is covered with detailed color-coded maps showing the following:
* Original 1913 alignments
* Intermediate alignments or sanctioned detours
* Final Alignments still in use by 1930
* Modern detours
* Gone or hard to reach
The map scale varies as needed to show meaningful detail, all the way down to 1 inch per mile.

It bursts with snippets of interesting things to see, lodging and great food along the route – but the maps are the star of the show. It is obvious that a great deal of research went into this.

The author (with whom I have no affiliation) has put together a short video highlighting the features of the book: YouTube - Lincoln Highway Companion

I originally bought it with the intention of putting together the “definitive” route for a Lincoln Highway Coast-to-Coast ride, but now I see there are too many variables and the decisions are just too subjective. The good news is that it gives me everything I need to choose the route I find most interesting.
I've attached my version of the west-to-east route. It takes the route north of Tahoe rather than south, but both are "correct". For a few miles west of Salt Lake City, it follows an older alignment that includes some dirt roads, but nothing challenging unless the weather is wet. Though I'd have a GPS with me to assist. Too easy to get off track.

Enjoy!

I went out for a bit of a drive a couple of Saturdays ago.

I've put some photos up if you'd like a look. The pushpin information bubbles have the same link.

Scotland April 2010 pictures by rvphotos - Photobucket

I live in Telford, Shropshire and drove to Lesmahagow truck stop (10-15 miles south of Glasgow) Friday afternoon/evening where I had a few hours kip.

I left there at silly o'clock and went up the motorway and A9 to the outskirts of Perth where the sat-nav had routed me along some B roads to the A93 rather than though Perth centre. (I know, I should have checked. )

The A93 takes you through Blairgowrie and Glenshee to Braemar, near Blamoral. At Balmoral I turned on to a single track B road that goes across towards the A9 and Inverness.

At Inverness, breakfast seemed like a good idea and a friendly traffic warden pointed me at a decent cafe with some disabled parking nearby. (NB most of central Inverness seems to be pedestrian only, unless disabled or you have some other legitimate reason.)

Then it was back on the A9 and on to the A99 through Wick to John o'Groats where I stopped and sent some postcards.

The rest of the journey took me along the north coast, round to Ullapool and back to Inverness.

I stopped at Tebay services for a kip and arrived home at about 8 on Sunday morning.

Now I have a problem, I like going places on day trips. How do I beat John o'Groats?

There are some breaks in the trail. As I was about to save it at John o'Groats the computer decided to be unco-operative and shut down dumping the trail from Inverness. Fortunately I was also using a yellow eTrex the batteries in which gave up just south of Inverness as I was heading for home. Hence the trail has been cobbled together by exporting and importing a number of GPX files.

Excellent trip, Roger, thanks for posting it!

The obvious answer to you 'where-next' question is... Lands End.
SpadesFlush
One small point. I do not know if you are aware that you could have each pushpin call up the specific photo for the location of that particular pushpin.

As you have it now, each pushpin calls up the mini-library of all the photos of the trip. And that is fine, if that is what you intended.

On the other hand, if you copy the web address for a particular photo, say, Scotland April 2010 :: 18:15 - Loch Glascarnoch, Ross-Shire‎ picture by rvphotos - Photobucket and paste that into the balloon, a click on the pushpin will call up just that photo. See the pushpin for Loch Glascarnoch in the attached axe file as an example.

Just a thought.
RogerV
Thanks for the thought SF, but I was aware.

The reason I didn't do it is because the photos are timed and sometimes it's easier to work through in sequence.

But hey, it's the old story, what ever you do it's wrong.
SpadesFlush
No, no, never wrong. It is a question of preference.

Non-AutoRoute Trip 1994

London-Milan-Zurich-Augsburg-Geneva-London

This is a memorable trip I undertook before AutoRoute, but I wanted to reconstruct it in AutoRoute for posterity. I well remember juggling various books and paper maps that would be completely unnecessary in the age of AutoRoute.

THE BLUE RIDGE PKWY - America's favorite drive.

I created this file in S&T 2010 but I haven't used it. Looks like a great road trip.
What is special about this file is that I didn't use any extra waypoints - only avoid areas to keep the route along the parkway.

Larry's file is worth studying! Have a look at the way the avoid area rectangles are placed. Nicely done.

SpadesFlush .. I have a problem that you don't appear to have. You put in your stops & time delay, everything stays normal.

Sometimes when I'll depart from home, when I stop for gas & put in the delay time, it'll change my start time to a end of day 30 minutes & 20 miles after I started!

My workaround is one master map, then save each daily leg & delete the previous day.

On many trips when I enter a stop, v2010 changes my start time based on the last stop time. I've been unable to undo, once it changes the start time. What am I doing wrong or are you doing a workaround?

Frustrated!
SpadesFlush
@monkey2: I am not doing anything particular as a workaround except that I do not use the default setting of Route Options (Profile tab) for the "End driving at:", which I think is 5PM or something. I set it for midnight so that it effectively never comes into play (for me, at least). The most dangerous time to be driving, I understand, is between midnight and 3 AM and doubly dangerous in that time period Saturday and Sumday mornings. But I am not sure if that resolves the problem you describe. It might be the "Start driving at:" option in your case that is doing it, for instance.

I can remember having the same sort of experiences you are having but I cannot remember what caused it or what I did to fix it.

Perhaps the best thing to do would be to post a couple of examples in the form of 'before' and 'after' EST files for us to play around with. If you have privacy concerns, you can 'sanitize' the file by removing or obscuring sensitive information.

At any rate, I think there is a simpler fix than your one-master-map workaround. I always use one EST/AXE file for multi-day trips such as the Copenhagen trip above without this sort of problem.
