Where does Windows store Product Key for Streets & Trips?

Hello everyone! Wow, I love the internet, there is a forum for everything!! Ok, now to my problem. I purchase Streets&Trips 2009(GPS), installed and activated on my craptop, but I lost the &^&#% CD case, left in the rental car and of course they haven't seen it. Now I'm screwed if my system crashes and have to reinstall the software. I called MS and they told me it would be $32 for a replacement disk and another $10 for a new product key. They would not tell me how to find it in my registry. Shocker. I've tried several keyfinder programs but they won't find it, one only found the product ID. There has to be a way to find the product key in the registry. Anyone know how?

I'm missing your point here. If you had to buy a new DVD anyway and the product is already good for 2 computers, What would be the advantage of knowing the key. If you are concerned about your Acer, clone the hard drive. Then recovery is a no brainer.

I would just like to have my product key that I paid $75 for and it should be in the registry (Vista).........somewhere.

I think it is hidden in an xml file in the S&T folder. This seems to be the latest trend as we have seen with Mobile PC as well. I do not think it appears anywhere in the registry.

That must be the case because I can't find it or any info on the net.

Ok, I've exhausted every avenue to find this with no luck. I don't want to buy another hard drive just to clone. What I am doing here is trying to prevent from having to buy the software disk again. Would anyone be willing to give me their part no. off their disk. Then they can generate a new product key off of that but I still have to pay $10 and this would not prevent you from doing the same with the same part no. in the future. This is a legit attempt to recover my product key and not something dishonest. I have my product ID which means I'm legit. Anyway, just thought I would ask.

I can do one better, link to download the full program. The downloadble trial version is the same as the version on the CD. If you but a Product Key in it will become the full version.

ON edit: sorry I thought you needed the disk, didn't realize you need it for them to generate the product key. Don't have my disk with me.

No problem. I'm still trying to find a solution. Thanks for responding.

There are several free programs that can retrieve product keys used to install applications.....I had this happen when I lost my Microsoft Office CD case. I was able to get it back

http://pcsupport.about.com/od/productkeysactivation/tp/topkeyfinder.htm is a link to 6 such applications. Dont know if any will work for S&T but, theres nothing to lose!

I have tried all the available free keyfinders I could find but the most I have come up with is just the product ID. Thanks for responding, I will continue to search. Could be because it's new software from Microsoft? Who knows.

Still no luck.

I don't know if what I am suggesting will work for you. But....

I have downloaded a program called Belarc Adviser. It does a look at your system and advises what it finds. This includes installed software, hardware, security patches and more.

With the programs, it does supply some Keys. It shows me the ST2007 info, but no key for it. I only have the trial version of 2009, which has expired. (Did not find a local source that was reasonably priced, yet.)

Figured it may be worth a try. And the other info about your system may be interesting.

I guess I'm just SOL cause I've lost my cd and the laptop crashed. Bought a new laptop and can't find my CD. I guess I have to repurchase.

Hi thelt, welcome to the forums. Don't buy it, yet. Download the 60-day trial, instead. That will give you 60 days time to find your lost DVD.

Is the free download the gps enabled version?
Marvin Hlavac
Yes, to the best of my knowledge all "versions" contain completely identical software:
  • Streets & Trips 2009 with GPS Locator
  • Streets & Trips 2009, software-only version
  • Streets & Trips 2009, 60-day free trial
glennw
The 60 day trial of S&T 2009 is fully functioning.

... and there is no need to un-install the "trial" version. Just enter the activation code from the retail version, and you are good to go.

easy, right after you click on street & trips icon to start it up you will see at the start up screen it says ( this product is licensed to) next to your name is the product key that screen stays for about 2 to 3 seconds so you gotta pay attention after you click street & trips icon!!
there is other software that works 100% with the street & trips GPS port, it's call mapsphare and it's 100% free I have both s&t 2009 and mapsphere and they work both with the same GPS port http://www.mapsphere.com/

Installed their free trial version this morning and in less than 24 hours it already asking for the product key. Has anybody else had this problem and how do you get around it. A reinstall, knowing Microsoft, want work. They have probably left something in every part of you computer to make sure you can't install again.

Hi Suar,

:welcome: to Laptop GPS World.

When starting Streets & Trips that has not been activated yet, you should have the choice to "Activate now" or "Use trial version".

There was no problem with the install. I even allowed their free version to remove S & T 2008 which was on my laptop at the time. I can always reinstall S &T 2008 since I still have the disk. When I logged in to Streets and Trips I was confronted with the activation box. I selected use free trial and everything worked ok. The only difference, there was no reminder on the box telling me how many days were left on my trial. I played around with the software and connected my DeLorme GPS-40 and got that to work. I then went to the Microsoft's site and downloaded the dat file for construction updates and installed it in the data folder. Exited the software to see if the construction file would work. Logged back in and received the activation box with "Activate now" already selected and free trail grayed out. Thought it was a joke at first. Pushed the continue button, thinking there would be another free trial selection. I was wrong about it being a joke. It asked for product key and that was that. Tried to contact Microsoft support by email but you need a product code for that.

What is shown at start-up is the product ID not the product Key. This can also be found by clicking on help and then click about S &T. The product key is what you need to continue using the software after your sixty day trial is up. That will not be found anywhere in the product without cheating.

Did an uninstall of the software. Ran utilities like CC Cleaner to for any left behind pieces. Surprisingly I able to reinstall the software with know problem. Logged in and did not get a "Your 60 day free trial has ended." (See attachment) But the moment of truth will come when I log out and try to log back in. We'll see. At least I got a product ID to contact Microsoft with.

Yes use Belarc, it will show you all the keys for all your software
Belarc Advisor - Free Personal PC Audit

Let me know if this helps you

Based on my experience in rebuilding my Windows virtual machine, I'm pretty sure it's actually stored in a different file (not in the registry, not in a xml file, but one required by the OS).
