Two versions of Mapsource can coexist

For those of us who really love to hate the latest version of Garmin's Mapsource program (ver. 6.14.1) there is a way to have your cake...

You can have both 6.14.1 installed and still use 6.13.7. That way you can do screen captures or print the pretty map display from 6.14.1 but still use 6.13.7 for real work.

Here's a link to a post in the Geocaching.com forum for how to do it. I haven't tried it yet but that's on the list for this afternoon.

Okay, I tested and it works fine. I had 6.13.7 already installed.

1. Renamed the Mapsource.exe file to Mapsource_6137.exe.

2. Edited the desktop shortcut (right-click/Properties) to change the program name in the Target to Mapsource_6137.exe (and I changed the icon to point at the different program name).

3. Tested the edited desktop shortcut to make sure version 6.13.7 still works.

4. Installed the 6.14.1 update.

That's pretty much it. The update did not create another desktop shortcut. The old one is still there and working. I added another one for the new version.

I tested the old version to make sure I can still download maps and things to Mobile PC and it works. It still doesn't work with the new version but that doesn't matter now.

Thanks Ken,
That was somewhere on my to do list after you mentioned seeing more than one MapSource in Add/Remove. Now, I can decide whether I want to bother with that beautiful but slow display and still maintain transfer flexibility.

I couldn't find the new icons for 6.14.1 so I extracted some true colour sizes and zipped them.
