I was just thinking of the same thing. Since installing 2009 in my desktop, i have had quite a few problems. I get frequent lock-ups and ocasionaly the program will just shut down completely. No warning messages or anything, it just disappears and my screen goes back to desktop. I don't dare install it on my laptop, with it's much smaller hard drive and memory. I'm going to Mexico this winter and would love to have the expanded Mexican maps but I think I will go with my 2007 version that I know works. It would be great if one could import the newer map data but I guess that would not be possible. Too bad MS doesn't just offer an updated map data base for their earlier programs. I would gladly pay the same price as the full program just to update an trouble-free program.

Other than the space used up, I don't see what harm there is in installing it on your laptop. S&T does a fairly shallow install compared to most other applications. Whatever is causing the crashes on your desktop will not necessarily recur on your laptop.

P.S. If you get a "Send error to Microsoft" dialog after the crash, you should send in the error report. The more people that send in a given error, the more likely it is to get fixed in the next version.

i was wondering if there were some pc based software that would compare one file to another and show the differences between the two - that would allow one to copy a 2007 file and submit it to 2009 software and let it "convert or upgrade" (or whatever it does to the file) - then compare the two files to see what the software did to the 2007 version of the file - hopefully it would be something simple like a filename change - OR - maybe i've had one too many glasses of wine this evening !!!

Just like Tao does, I'd recommend installing version 2009. But if you wish to experiment (on your own risk), you could go to C:\Program Files\Microsoft Streets & Trips 2007 (or 2008) and rename the Data folder to something else, for example Data_OLD. Then copy the Data folder from your 2009 installation to C:\Program Files\Microsoft Streets & Trips 2007 (or 2008).

This worked in the past. I suspect it may no longer work, but if you are really set on continuing using the old software with newer data, it may be worth trying it.

This is not supported my Microsoft, and I'm not even sure if it is legal to do, even if you purchased both versions of Streets & Trips.
