Garmin Navigation Device maps for Garmin Mobile PC

I am an owner of Garmin Mobile PC along with GlobalSat BU-535 GPS receiver. I am in Pakistan right now, and Garmin does not have any maps for Pakistan.

However, there is a company called Naqsha.net which sells Garmin products with preloaded maps of Pakistan. They also sell standalone maps which work with any Garmin navigation product.

Can somebody please tell me if it would be possible to load these Garmin maps onto my Garmin Mobile PC software?

Thanks

Hi Hussain,

It depends on whether those maps are locked or not. If they are not locked they will work.

If they are locked you will need a Garmin GPS receiver for them to unlock to. You cannot unlock maps to the software-only version of Mobile PC. It only uses the maps that come with it and any maps that are not locked.

Okay thanks. So if I have Garmin GPS receiver, I can unlock these maps for use with Garmin Mobile PC. Can you please give me a link to Garmin GPS receiver which will work with my Garmin Mobil PC software.

There is another site that is offering maps for Pakistan OpenStreetMap.org as well as Maps.Google.com. Can I use these with any of the GPS software?

Thanks
tcassidy
From all appearances, the maps on naqsha will not unlock to Mobile PC, even if you had the version that included a GPS receiver. However, it is reasonable to call them and ask.

The maps from OpenStreetMap and Google will not work with Garmin Mobile PC.

So is there any software in the world in which OpenStreetMap or Google Maps will work along with a GPS receiver?

Thanks

At naqsha.com I see a product "Pakistan Navigator $120 (Map only)" for Garmin PNDs. Would this not unlock to a Garmin GPS20x or GPS10x?
hussain
I don't know does anyone know

I found this Garmin unlocked map for Pakistan. Would this work with Garmin Mobile, Destinator or iGuidance?
Marvin Hlavac
No Destinator, no iGuidance, but it should work with Garmin Mobile PC, IMHO.

Well, I install Garmin Mobile PC trial version on my computer, but I cannot figure out how can I upload maps onto my Garmin Mobile PC.

Can anybody help.

I also tried installing Mapsource but after installation the map source simply said that there are no map products installed on your pc.
tcassidy
That is a compiled map so won't work with MapSource.

Copy the gmapsupp.img file from the zip file attached to that message to your GarminMobilePC folder and it should show in Mobile PC. I don't have the trial version of GMPC so I can't say for sure but it would work with the retail version.

It took me a while to track this down as I wasn't sure where Islamabad was in Pakistan. It only shows at 300m or less.

I have tried but software still shows that no maps are installed with trial version can somebody please confirm.

Where are you looking in Garmin Mobile PC that says there are no maps installed? Did you look in Tools-Manage My Data-Map Sets?

Terry

If you see a basemap and the Islamabad map listed there, go back to View Map and click the Browse button in the bottom left corner Click on the '-' on the top right until you are looking at the world basemap. Drag the map over until the Asian continent is centered. Click on the magnifying glass on the left and draw a box around Pakistan. Find Islamabad and draw a box around it to magnify and center it. Use the '+' button until you get in close enough to see the details as in my previous screen capture.

If you don't see the maps listed, I guess it doesn't work with the trial version.

Here's a worldwide basemap you can use for your testing. I'm not sure what the filename is when you download it. It must be named GMAPBMAP.IMG and placed in the same folder as the Mobile PC application (and the gmapsupp.img file). If that's no the filename, just rename it and put it in the right folder.

EDIT: Ooops, I see Terry already linked one.

Thank you. It is working now.
tcassidy
Glad to hear that Hussain. Now you should look for some maps of other areas of Pakistan besides Islamabad.

Yes, that's what I was thinking. Instead of the map file that you downloaded from the forum, why not create your own map file from the data available at www.openstreetmap.org? I see more of Pakistan there, and the project is being worked on contantly, new roads are added often.

If you give it a try, please do let us know how it works out for you.

Okay so i downloaded garmin mobile pc and chaos ensued. However i was able to figure out how to use this.

I first downloaded world base map from here:
http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=461

and then downloaded a free opensource pakistan map for here:
pkmaps.freeforums.org/routable-islamabad-street-map-for-garmin-gps-devices-t7.html <edit>Expired link</edit>

But now when i go to "Where to" -> "Address", garmin mobile pc tells me that no garmin map product is installed. Can somebody please tell me what is the problem here and how can i solve it.
tcassidy
I suggest that although the Islamabad (not Pakistan) map you downloaded says it is routable, the basemap isn't. So Unless you live in Islamabad, you can't use the 'Where to' function as there is no routable data for your area.

I actually live in islamabad so as per your explanation i should be able to use it??

I'm not sure which basemap Hussain has. The basemap that comes with Mobile PC is definitely routable in Pakistan. I just used Mapsource to do a route from Karachi to Ahmadpur via Shikarpur and Quetta. Yes, I know that's not the direct route. I just wanted to test to be sure that it's routing so I intentionally threw in a couple of extra stops to force it out of the way.

The Mobile PC basemap can be identified by its size. It's GMAPBMAP.IMG at 92,708 KB. It doesn't have a lot of street level detail but it has major highways and does route on them.

Hussain, do you know which basemap you have? Just identify it's file size and I can probably figure out which one it is.

Okay, I just tested the smaller world basemap that I linked to in my Dec 20 message above and it also routes in Pakistan. It's a file size of 31,824KB. That testing was with Mapsource because it's so much easier. You don't have to fake it out to force it to a New Location to start your route.

You should be able to set up a route on a routable map.

Terry

I'm sorry, I missed the part about the addresses. The basemaps don't have any addresses in them, or POIs or any of that stuff.

I don't know. It's the one that comes with Mobile PC. I don't know if it's available to download anywhere. I took a pretty good look and in Pakistan I cannot see any obvious differences between that one and the smaller one that I linked to above.

hussain
Can somebody please upload the following maps and see if the address search option works for them. Thank you very much.

<edit>Expired link removed</edit>
tcassidy
If this is the same map you referenced at the beginning, then no. You can search for POIs though. I turned off the internal CNNA NT 2009 map and went throught the Near and Near other searches to look in Islamabad (because I am not there) and got to a point where I could search the amenities of that city. The screen grab is searching for restaurants. Of course GMPC can't plan a route to it as there is an ocean in the way.

Thankyou very much for your help.

One last thing, how can you add more than one opensource map to garmin mobile pc.

Thanks
