I need New Zealand mapping software for my Bluetooth GPS and EeePC

My son, who lives in the UK, sent me (I live in New Zealand), a Blue Next BN-905GR GPS receiver with a Bluetooth USB adapter. I've installed the software, and it appears I'm getting connectivity; so far so good.

I can see the possibilities here. Mapping software interests me, as does navigation. I've installed it on an EeePC, running XP.

Where to from here? What is the best software to use?, bearing in mind that I probably should try it before buying.

Any guidance would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Go up to the home page on the site and do a search for "new zealand" and also for "Australia" and "NZ" across all sections. There have been at least a couple of discussions that included sources of maps and software for NZ.

Thanks Ken. I'm just getting to grips with this device. Downloaded a program called Visual GPS, it works (or my receiver works). Excellent, I picked up 9 satellites and got my latitude, longitude, plus elevation.

I hope I'm not being too inane, but this is very new to me.

Hi jcr1, welcome to your new hobby . I think Garmin Mobile PC is the software you could look into. Check the Garmin forum here at the site. There is more info there, including some information posted by other people form New Zealand and Australia, as Ken mentioned.

Thanks Marvin,

This is a most welcoming friendly site.

I'll check out those links and also follow up on the advice too.

I can see some challenges looming; takes me back 8 years or so when I started playing around with Linux.

Fortunately, its way more user friendly than Linux, especially from 8 years ago.

Or just scroll to the bottom of the page. The "Similar Threads" feature Marvin has set up down there finds related threads and provides links to them. It works really well, you'll see a few threads about New Zealand and maps there now.

Ken in Cape Breton, thanks for the reminder! I often forget about the "Similar Threads" feature, and instead I waste my time using other methods of search, rather then simply scrolling down to the bottom of the page where very often is a link (or links) to exactly the information I'm looking for.

DOH!!! (sound of hand slapping head) I completely forgot about that. There are the threads I was thinking about listed right there at the bottom. Thanks, Ken. Happy New Year.
