City Navigator 2009 in nRoute

I just acquired the new Garmin City Navigator 2009 for use with nRoute. I plug my GPS receptor on the Laptop in the car and then I navigate like this, but City Navigator 2009 doesn't appear in nRoute. In Mapsource no problems, but even after a re-installation of nRoute, City Navigator 2009 is not in the list of maps.

Is there someone who have an idea, please?

Thanks,
Fred

Fred, you did not say what country you have for City Navigator. You are concerned about your English so I assume it is not North America.

If it is City Navigator Europe 2009NT, it installs completely differently than previous versions.

You must have a new version of Mapsource? (6.14.5 or 6.15.3??) Mapsource 6.13.7 will not see City Navigator Europe 2009NT. That is also why nRoute does not see it.

There is a way to convert City Navigator Europe 2009NT so the older versions of MapSource -- and nRoute -- can use it.

Are you comfortable doing technical things on your computer?

Thanks Ken,

Exactly, it's for the Europe version, I see that the installation is completely different, different files format and directories. I have installed the version 6.15.3 of Mapsource (I like the new aspect of the maps) and it see the City Navigator Europe 2009, but about nRoute I can't find a new version, the last one is the number 2.7.6 from the 24 April 2007. And even with the last version of Mapsource, nRoute remains blind.

Yes, it's not a problem for me to do technical things on the computer. Ready for your instructions sir.

Fred,

Download GMapTool040c.

In the .zip file you will see a folder named "convertCNE".

In the convertCNE folder you will see a file named "readme-here.txt". Read this file and it will explain how to convert CN Europe 2009 to the old Mapsource 6.13.x installation format. This will allow nRoute to use it. It will not affect the new installation of the maps.

If you are interested what it is doing, you can look through the "here613.bat" file.

Please notice that the batch file uses the command line version (gmt.exe), not the Windows gui version. You do not need to use GMapTool.exe for this conversion.

If you have any trouble, just ask a question here.

EDIT: There is not a newer version of nRoute.

Yahou! It works perfectly! Viva Polska! Genkouje Bartzo!

Should I use two different versions of CNE9, the normal one for Mapsource and the converted one for nRoute? Is it possible to use the converted version for both (to use less space on the HD)?

I know that there is different map, like home made, do you know where I can look for this?

Thanks a lot,

Congratulations, Fred. I'm glad it worked.

You should be able to uninstall the original installation of CNE2009 without affecting the one you just converted. The trick will be to figure out which one to uninstall. Did you notice if the converted one installed with a different name that will be obvious in the "Add/Remove Programs" list?

It's very possible that the converted one will not show up in the "Add/Remove Programs" list. That will make it easier. Just uninstall the one that is in the list (and cross your fingers!).

If things get screwed up, the worst thing is that you start over with the original installation and then run the conversion again. Just make sure you backup the unlock code. You can use the unlock wizard to backup the unlock code to a disk file and also to your MyGarmin account on Garmin's website. I always do both. You should always do this anyway.

There are many maps available in Garmin-compatible format. You can search with your favorite search engine to find them. If you search for something like "Garmin GPS Map Turkey" or "Garmin GPS Map Dusseldorf", you will find something. If you want topographical maps you should include the word "topo" in your search words.

If you are not successful, tell us what you are looking for and we can help.

Some people look for maps when they really want tracks. That is, they already have maps of an area but they want to find good places to hike or ride a mountain bike. You can find many people who have taken their GPS with them and recorded their track and have shared it for download on the internet. You can search for these by using words like "GPS track hike bike trail Salzburg".

........ ???? ...... Do you want to find maps that someone has already made? Or do you want to make your own maps?

Nice, everything's perfect!

After uninstallation of CNE9 I work actually on Mapsource and nRoute with the converted maps. I have saved my unlock code.

About more maps, I was looking for what I can find for my country, France. I already have the Topo, but one friend from Germany talls me that there is some map for different countries, like home made and free to download. No, I don't want to make my own maps.

Thanks a lot for your advise an help, it was a real pleasure.

I am interested in this thread from a bit of a different angle.

I have nRoute installed on a tablet with Mapsource & City Navigator NA. In addition, I have a compiled mapset of Ontario & Quebec snowmobile trails.

The problem is that I cannot see both the street level mapping and the snowmobile trails simultaneously. I can select one or the other of these mapsets.

Is there a way that I can build a new mapset that combines both of these for nRoute? I have been able to do this for Que on the PPC but not on the tablet.

Thanks

Simple answer, No.

The good and the bad of nroute is it sees exactly what is installed in MapSource. nroute doesn't use compiled mapsets, unfortunately.

I was afraid of that. I guess that means that if I want to see the trails, I have to switch to that set and then not see the street level. I can add the maps from the trail map to the maps in Mapsource but cannot use them in nRoute.

Thanks for the answer, though.

It's also a frustration in MapSource. I have two excellent ATV trail maps for southwestern Alberta that are transparent overlays. I can use MapSource to compile them together with the associated topo or road maps for the same area and place the compiled mapset on my Mobile PC, my eTrex Legend and my iQue 3600. In those devices they work great, with the trail maps displaying over top of the topo or road maps, just as if they were part of them. But I cannot see the same view in MapSource. If I want to look at them for trip planning on my PC I need to use Mobile PC, which isn't nearly as versatile as MapSource for that sort of thing. Very frustrating.

If you are moderately technical, there is a discussion thread here about how to download and install the Mobile PC "update" file as a standalone trial version. You won't be able to navigate with it but you would be able to use it as a "viewer" for compiled mapsets like you're describing. That assumes, of course, that the trail maps you are talking about are transparent overlays. If they aren't transparent, simply compiling them into a mapset together with the related road map won't buy you anything.

Thanks, I'll look for the Mobile PC thread. I assume it is under the Mobile PC section?
