Anything cheaper than Franson GPS GATE?
Bill Melbourne
I'm running Garmin nRoute on a laptop and can't connect unless I have GPSGATE, which is expensive. Are there similar free programs to do the job (except XPORT)?

Why can't I connect to nRoute directly from my GPS?

nRoute requires a GPS capable of supplying Garmin-type data (PVT rather than NMEA). If you are using a Garmin GPS, the maps nRoute is using must be unlocked to that device.

Thanks Terry, The gps I have must run NMEA, the maps are unlocked and GPSGATE works perfectly, BUT, it's expensive.

If that is all GPS Gate is used for, it could be considered expensive. However, compared to the other option of buying a Garmin GPS and unlock codes for your maps for that device, GPS Gate is a cheap solution.

EDIT. Is the device you unlocked your maps to usable as a GPS?

No, I really need software that does the job of GPSGATE. Surely there is something else that works the same?

How much does GpsGate cost? Am I reading the Franson site correctly? Is it $12.95 US for a single licence for GpsGate Express? That doesn't seem very expensive. Or am I missing something?

We've never been able to find anything else. As far as I know, GPSGate is the only program out there that does the conversion to create a virtual Garmin protocol feed from an NMEA protocol feed.

Thanks for pointing that out. I was reading the price for the standard version which is US$39.00 (AUS$61.00.)
I think AUS$20.00 is reasonable, so I'll buy it.
