Thanks Marvin,
Jucabras should be happy with this one. I installed and did a quick test with one waypoint. It transferred no problems and shows up in GMPC.

I'm glad it was something that just needed a little fixing. I was afraid Garmin just simply didn't want to support that functionality.

Marvin,

The trick is to get the defect reports past the tech support wienies and to the developers. That can be really difficult sometimes. It's amazing the sort of junk some of the tech support folks think are "features" rather than bugs.

Thanks to all for their persistence in contacting Garmin Technical Support with issues.

It's still not perfect. I am running Mapsource on a MSI Wind Netbook with OSX and then XP running on VMware Fusion. I needed to make sure that the computer would work with this setup before buying GMPC so I don't have a GPS hooked up yet or GMPC even installed yet. I installed Mapsource 3.0, an old version that I had lying around, then Version 6.13.7 (?) the one that really works, and everything worked fine. I then installed Discover GPS and again, everything worked fine. I did the upgrade and got an error message. When Mapsource started up, it would stop before it fully loaded and said that I needed to reinstall Discover GPS. I tried to reinstall Discover GPS and it didn't make a difference. I discarded and reinstalled Mapsource v3.0, Mapsource 6.13.7(?) and then Discover GPS and it works fine.

Hi Jucubras,

I'm not so happy with it. It still distorts things. If you want to test this, create a waypoint. In the create waypoint dialog look for the "Proximity" box. Uncheck the "Unknown" checkbox beside it and put "10" in the box. This is supposed to draw a 10km circle around the waypoint. Tell me if yours looks like a circle. Mine looks like someone squashed it rather badly.

Comparing it to 6137, the proximity circle is not wrong. The scale is distorted somewhat in the horizontal direction. I had noticed the difference in display before but can't see why they did that. Maybe to accent the aspect ratio of Nuvis?

Hi...here two examples... first: circle radius looks fine in my 19" lcd monitor & seems to be exactly metered...
Typs(graphic effects in displaying map features, wpts and delimiting parks, street border, etc) doesn't look the sharply I would like...
I'm testing... more about wpts... it is supossed to add an image to a wpt and to show a small thumb of it.It first does... you save it.When you open again... the image was gone.Same thing occurred with previous version, and with the adiction that the gdb file could not be opened again on MS 6.13.7...!!!
Still for me the better version....!!!
I'll continue testing on my PC before using it on my touchscreen laptop...!!!!
My happiness is the functionality in transferring wpts & detailed maps to Garmin Mobile PC.Didn't tried yet...hope it works fine.

How did you get a non-distorted circle Jucabras? Could it be the map you are using? I checked it on my other laptop with a 4:3 aspect ratio rather than 16:9 and it still distorts the same way with all my Canada and North America maps.

Terry,

Jucubras is much closer to the equator than we are. Proportions are perfect at the equator. The distortion increases the further north and south you go.

This is a well-known issue for all map display software. It has been well understood for centuries, even in drawing paper maps. It is always a problem when you try to take a significant portion of a sphere and portray it on a flat surface. If you just display it with empty gaps towards the top and bottom, it works okay. But if you want a continuous display you need to adjust for the distortion that occurs as you try to "stretch" the geography horizontally nearer the north and south poles.

The way you "stretch" the portions nearer the top and bottom of the sphere is to use mathematical calculations developed by Gerardus Mercator in 1569.

It's astonishing to me that Garmin knew how to do it correctly in all versions up to 6.13.7 (the same test in that version produces a perfect circle at my location just above the 49th parallel) but seems to have completely forgotten how to do it now. Strange....

Who knows...knows...and who doesn't is blind....

Did as school homework Ken's in Regina report and find this:
Wpt at Equator S34.90271 W56.19284 its a perfect proximity circle....
Wpt at Home S34.90271 W56.19284 (Montevideo)... seems correct to my eyes but if meassured with a rule there is a difference in minus of the vertical axis...
Wpt at the very south S54.80667 W68.30475 (Ushuaia) and the circle its more a hen egg....!!!

Many thanks for teaching...

You are welcome, Jucubras. If you do the same test with 6.13.7 you will find that the circles are correct in all three waypoints.

The problem was reported to Garmin in 6.14.3 but they still have not corrected it. That is surprising and annoying to me when it is such a basic feature of drawing maps. For commercial map providers, it is like forgetting (or ignoring) that 2+2=4.

Considering the time required to fix a 'real' problem with MapSource, I am not surprised they have not quickly fixed a 'perceived' one.
