Accurate street map program?
mjstef
Is there any out there? A friend is running Delorme Streets & Trips and was north of Denver today in a 5 year old subdivision and the street he was looking for couldn't be found. What do the police and EMT's run? In the business were in street level maps are very important.

Microsoft Streets & Trips 2009 is EXTREMELY accurate on new roads, at least for what I've seen so far.

I doubt that any utility that required absolute accuracy would depend on consumer-level navigation software. Most programs discussed here are based on Navteq data. Others use TeleAtlas and Delorme uses in-house data.

Each navigation program designer must massage the data they receive to match what they require. So, by the time it is issued it is 6 months or more out of date. Generally, that is not a problem except in rapidly growing areas.

Navteq is probably the best supplier of mapping data in North America at the moment. Their data is used in Microsoft Streets & Trips and MapPoint, Garmin Mobile PC and iNav iGuidance.

Malaki86,

I can assure you that Streets&Trips is far from accurate. It uses the same map data (Navteq) as Garmin. Even the very latest Garmin quarterly update for City Navigator North America has stuff missing from at least a couple of areas I am familiar with. And some of the stuff it's missing is not especially new. Streets& Trips data is even older and more missing (I'm basing that comment on my Mappoint 2009, which is the same map data as Streets&Trips).

As Terry said, it generally takes the map retaillers, like Garmin and Microsoft, a few months to incorporate the data into their packaging after they get it from Navteq. But that's only half the story. Navteq is not a map data creator. They assemble the data from various sources. That takes time, too. So even assuming Navteq manages to capture all the new data and it's accurate, the lag from when they get it to when it can be purchased off the shelf is probably a year.

Regions of high population density will generally have more current data than regions that aren't as heavily populated.

As Terry said, you shouldn't bet your business on consumer-grade map products.

I know something about what it takes to compile all this data and I can say that products like Microsoft Streets&Trips and DeLorme Street Atlas and Garmin Mobile PC are collosal bargains ... incredible value for the money. But they are far from accurate enough to use as the only source of information for commercial purposes if you are needing street and address information in newer residential subdivisions and industrial parks.

It is likely one of the following two mapping programs:
  • DeLorme Street Atlas, or
  • Microsoft Streets and Trips

Those programs are made for consumer use. That's why they're so inexpensive.

If you really want accuracy, go to http://www.esri.com/. Be prepared to shell out some big bucks but they can do things you never dreamed of.
