Mapping program needed for real estate appraisal work
josephdifranco
Hello,

I need a mapping program for my real estate appraisal work. My company produces maps by hand, that is, a map is copied out of a map book and we rub on the needed graphics. With the Microsoft Streets and Trips demo, I was able to import locations quite easily from excel, but there is more functionality that I could use, so any program which covers the functions below would be of interest to me.

First, I would like to be able to customize the full page map title, including the font.

Second, would like the option to import a full size map into a word doc, I could only do a 1/2 size one in the demo.

Third, the balloons don't look all that great, so a slicker look would help, and I would prefer that they not be connected to a symbol, just the balloon would suffice.

Fourth, I would like to manipulate the location of the balloon versus the four pre-set locations (upper/lower left and right).

Fifth, I would like my data import to go directly into a baloon or other symbol with the address displayed, from excel. In streets and trips only a pushpin is displayed, each of which I have to right click on to get a balloon to pop up.

Finally, if a program has better mapping of local schools and hospitals, thats a plus.

I know this sounds like a wishlist, but I'm looking for a recommendation of any program with all of the features above. I'm willing to spend more money than the cost of streets and trips if needed.

Again, any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Hi Joseph,

It sounds like you need to take a look at Microsoft Mappoint. It has the same interface as Streets&Trips but it does so much more. In particular, in your case, it integrates extremely well with Microsoft Office so you might be able to do most or all of what you want with it.

You can get a free 60-day trial of Mappoint North America 2009. It is fully functional with no catches or gimmicks. It simply stops working after 60 days if you don't purchase and register it.

Hi Joe,

Menu > File > Save as Web Page > specify desired Width & Height. In the folder where the web page is saved, you will find two .gif files. One of them will be the map file you need.

Instead of the information balloons you could just use the annotation tools. The Text Box tool would give you more flexibility, but I don't think there is I way to import data into it. Unless guys at www.mapforums.com know how to do this in MapPoint. Perhaps go to their forum, and post you question there, just substitute Streets & Trips for MapPoint in your post.

Marvin,

I have not had a chance to try them out, but thanks for the tips!

Hello Joseph,

We have a web-based mapping program called LandVision. A number of appraisal companies use us. We show property information and parcel boundaries over aerial maps. You can click on a parcel and pull up transaction history and ownership information. Other layers like wetlands, hazard, roadways, etc can be turned on. We have all of CA and metro areas of AZ, OR, WA, TX, FL, NC etc. It is subscription based. Take a look at www.digmap.com/landvision

Thank you,
Todd
