Need Help on a Vehicle Tracking GPS System
madibob
I am searching for a system to track a vehicle and stumbled across this forum and thought someone may be able to help. I need to find a rugged GPS tracking system for off-road vehicle use. My thought was to use something like the Trimble Nomad. Below is what I need:
  1. Needs to be a rugged/durable GPS for an off road vehicle use.
  2. Doesn't necessarily need a display as long as it can record the data and transfer it to a PC of some sort. Data eventually does need to go a PC.
  3. I need to track way points of the vehicle with additional data from the vehicle at each way point. So, I need some type of an interface from the GPS to log the data. The data can come to the GPS discretely from a few sensors or it can be serial data (RS232). Serial data would be preferred....I have a processor already on the vehicle.
  4. I'd prefer an update rate of 5Hz or more to increase accuracy if the vehicle is moving fast.
  5. Software - I need the GPS to perform data acquisition from the vehicle and store this with the waypoints. I eventually need to create a map of where the vehicle traveled and the values of all my vehicle sensors at each waypoint.
Any guidance you guys have would be appreciated. The Nomad was an option, but it's 1Hz update rate. I also don't know how difficult it would be to write SW to read the serial port and log my vehicle data with the GPS data.

Here are some options I did find:
