If you know someone with a copy of Mobile PC that came with a 10x, it might work with your copy. The stand alone 10x (I have one) do not, probably a serial number sequence thing as all DVDs are the same (except for version level).

OK. I installed everything onto my 2nd (home) laptop.

All working correctly.
  • Transferred one track to Mobile PC. Fine.
  • Transferred 2nd track to Mobile PC. Fine.
  • Transferred 3rd track to Mobile PC, and the same problem as last night.
  • Deleted the GARMIN_STRK.nvm, and still not working.
  • Deleted all the items in this folder, and still not working.
  • Deleted the entire Garmin folder inside "user>app data>roaming" (which included all sub-folders inside 'Garmin' including 'Garmin MobilePC' and 'Devices', and everything works fine again (without any re-installation).
This more or less agrees with my earlier finding which was when Mapsource had all 58 tracks in it (sees them fine), and I selected them all and did a transfer to Mobile PC, only the 1st 2 tracks were sent across.

I'm open to suggestions as to how to get more across w/o crashing?

Start at the other end of your track list to verify it isn't a problem with the 3rd track.

Try just deleting or replacing strk.nvm and the current.gpx in the GPX folder.

OK, I imported by 58 tracks (GPX) into Mapsource. They all show up fine as track lines (at same time) in the Mapsource map window and list under the Tracks tab. I deleted tracks 3 to 58 and sent the remaining (first) 2 of 58 tracks across from Mapsource to Mobile PC (at same time) and both OK. Mobile PC sees them fine.

I repeated the process (deleting tracks 1 to 57 from within Mapsource) and then sent them across. Mobile PC bombed again with same error and won't open any more. Briefly flashes up "Importing tracks" and then stops for few seconds and then comes up with the error and won't reload.

I deleted only strk.nvm and current.gpx in the GPX folder and still gives the same error message and won't start.

I then deleted the entire GarminMobilePC sub-folder within Roaming>Garmin and Mobile PC starts up OK (but unlike a normal start, it goes through its initial set up screen as when run for first time including:
"Did this purchase of Garmin MObile PC include a Garmin GPS receiver?" (yes/no)
"Connect or power on your Garmin GPS receiver now" (back/done)
"To learn about features, updates, special offers, go to..."
Then the acquiring satellites screen (with option to skip)
Then the "Warning use GPS safely etc" screen (part of the normal intro)

Copy the entire GarminMobilePC folder from \Roaming\Garmin and place it somewhere you can find it easily (like your desktop). Then when GMPC won't start, just delete the existing one and copy the other one back. Real Easy. You can even leave the appropriate \Roamin\Garmin folder open while you are testing so it is no problem to find where to put it.

Then you don't spend so much time recovering from your tests and can concentrate more on the results.

I imported about 60 tracks by placing a copy of the gpx file created in MapSource in the GPX folder. It looked good until I tried to view them individualy and got a 'no map' warning!!

Interesting and thanks for the tip on copying the folder.

Based on what you tried, I also tried putting the GPX file with the 58 tracks (all of which have only a few points in them, ranging between 8 and 60 points per track) into the roaming>>GPX folder, and Mobile PC crashed also.

However, just copied my original Garmin MobilePC folder back (as you suggested) and everything fired up immediately.

Yes, when I get some more time, I'll try the same thing on a computer with 5.00.60 on it. I've had strange loss of map things before with .70. Mine didn't crash though so I think you have at least one track with a flaw in it as your previous error message indicated.

Copying the gpx file created with the tracks only does not work with GMPC 5.00.60. I even tried renaming it to current.gpx and deleting garmin_strk.nvm just in case. No tracks were added.

Copying the same gpx file in 5.00.70 appears to work but doesn't really. I copied the same gpx file with 21 tracks from the Nuvi 5000 and placed it in the GPX folder. On opening Mobile PC, I got a quick 'importing tracks' message and went to Tools-Manage My Data - Tracks. The 21 were listed but the third one gave some interesting results when selected, certainly not what I had produced. I didn't check all the rest but the ones I did were similar.

I will have to say that method does not work with tracks. Close, but no cigar!

I must have some other problems with this copy of GMPC 5.00.70. I can't even send it one track from MapSource and receive a usable result. It doesn't affect the program but the track is not what I sent.

After setting up Mobile PC on a fresh Win 7 64 bit computer, upgrading to 5.00.70 and testing both the gpx and MapSource transfer approaches, I think I can safely say you are wasting your time. The only tracks I managed to transfer that were usable in Mobile PC had 77 poins and 115 points. I tried my next largest at 136 points and the result was garbage. No crashes though. If the limit is ~120 points, this is a useless proposition.

I also uninstalled 5.00.70 and the map, reinstalled from the DVD and upgraded to 5.00.60. With that version, I couldn't transfer tracks at all! Mobile PC ignored the gpx file and tracks sent from MapSource using the transfer method failed to appear in Mobile PC. I tried it both running and restarted.

Enough of this. Unless you come up with something else or Garmin releases a new version, I'd say this is a bust.
