Loading Streets & Trips on a Netbook without a DVD or CD drive
RsH
Will Streets and Trips ever be available on an SD card so that I can install it on my ASUS eee PC 1000HE? It has 1 gig of RAM, a 160 gig hard drive, and 3 usb ports, as well as an SDHD card capable slot... so using the SD card is an easy way to install the product, IF it comes that way. A DVD or CD set is USELESS to me since I do NOT want to spend $80 for an external DVD that I do NOT have any use for otherwise... What does Microsoft plan to do if netbooks become even more popular? 9 plus hours with one charge of the battery, and it works well with the Pharos 360... and Global Mapper so I know the GPS works on it already.

Any ideas? [I know I can create an ISO image of a DVD and use a virtual DVD to install that way, but that involves even more work than I want to do, or should have to do, in my view...]

If you have another computer or know someone who does, you could share the DVD drive of that computer over a network. Or you could copy the DVD to a USB key and then install from that.

ISO isn't necessary as this is not an operating system. A simple copy should work fine.

Bob, you could also just download the 60-day trial version of Streets & Trips from the Internet. There is no difference between the doawnloadable trial version, and the version you buy in store. The only difference is that the retail version comes with an activation code. So if I had a netbook, or any PC without a DVD drive, I would just download the program from the Internet, install it, and then use the activation code from a store.

That presumes that you are connecting to the internet one way or the other.

I connect to the internet using my desktop but NOT usually with the netbook, since that is for use while on travels via cruise ship, car, etc., around the world. I prefer to remain OFF the web completely since that way the unit is never compromised security-wise.

While I admit I could connect in via either ethernet cable connection or wireless, in some of the places I am going to be that is NOT a wise move... and while I agree I could take the route you suggest, it may NOT be the way to go for everyone.

Also, just for the record, not every program is available with an 'x' day free trial, and then what? Anyway, Marvin, thanks for the heads up on the 'free trial' and I will be loading my Streets and Trips 2007 for my purposes, since it is fine for tracking a cruise ship in the Caribbean and Canal and Pacific bodies of water - they haven't changed materially since 2007 was issued <grin>... [CD/DVD to ISO image on the desktop, copied to 4 gig SD card, copied to Netbook, then installed using a virtual DVD drive.]

Hey Bob,

You're making it a lot more work than it needs to be. Just copy the DVD to the thumb drive, move it to the netbook and run SETUP.EXE on the thumb drive.

If the thumb drive is blank, just copy the DVD directly to it. In this case, your netbook may even see the Autorun file and launch the installer for you when you plug in the thumb drive.

If the thumb drive has other stuff that you don't want to mess up, create a new folder and copy the DVD to it. In this case you'll have to manually run SETUP.EXE in the DVD folder.

This will work for any standard installation CD or DVD.

No need to mess about creating the ISO and installing a virtual DVD program. At least, not for the purpose of installing software.

I suggest you rip the DVD to hard drive, make a nice fat .iso file and run it with Daemon Tools - see filehippo.com to get all the tools you need for this. cdbxpp etc.

Way more work than necessary. See my post immediately before yours.

I would disagree.
For a laptop without a DVD drive, these are very necessary.
Most software that you just copy off a dvd/cd will not install properly.
Maybe ST&T does so fine, but I just make ISOs as a policy - Have had too many instances where the plain copy bites me in the rear later when it won't work for an upgrade.

Keep them all on a nice NAS drive and can access them anytime I want.

But if you were just doing this one install, just once, I agree your method is faster/simpler.

For the record, Ken suggestion are correct. S&T does not require a DVD or ISO - just copying the files on the DVD to a SD or thumb drive is sufficent. These little drives are cheap these days and come in very handy. A 2GB one would hold the S&T setup files nicely.
