I am using the trial version until the regular arrives any day.
When planning a long trip 2500 miles +, I like to search for POI along the way. I prefer to do it from a point usually from where we spend the night, rather than a segment or entire route. When I do the search I do it for a 50 mile circle. There is no drop down menu to do the search and if I accidentally hit the search along the route, there seems to be no way to get back to the search from point. Therefore S & T starts searching along the entire route out to 50 miles or so. This bring the whole system down, and is a real pain if the file hadn't been just saved.
Does any one have a good solution other than never hitting the entire route. This happens it the pointer touches the route and then POI looks along the route. My previous S & T would allow me to cancel, but not the 2009. It just locks up.

After you mistakenly start searching POI's along your entire long route, try to just press Esc-key, and then just wait. It may take a long time, but it should eventually cancel the search.
I just tested it with a route from Toronto, Canada to Mexico City, Mexico. It is over 4,000 km or 2.500 miles long route, and I set the search to the maximum radius of 80 km / 50 miles around the whole route. I'm not even going to guess how long the search would take. 30 minutes? An hour? Hours? But I just simply pressed the Esc key on my keyboard, and within about a minute the search stopped.
Would I wish the search stopped immediatelly? Yes. But knowing that the cancel feature does work, I will gladly wait that one minute.

Did you ever try S&T Keys 2009 (see link in my signature) and use the F10 keys (find nearby place at GPS location) when you need to find nearby places around your current position. Could that help not getting into the problem?

You can choose an area from the map, right click on a gas station, restaurant, hotel or anything else, go to the drop down on the "route" choose to add to the route. Right click on that line, in the instructions, and choose to find nearby places. It will bring up the nearby places for the distance you have set and not the entire route.
