nRoute no longer available from Garmin
Ken in Regina
The nRoute navigation program is no longer available for download from Garmin's support site. They have not supported the last version with updates for quite awhile. The latest versions of their maps don't work in older versions of MapSource.

Here is a remaining location for download if you need it.

I noticed that nRoute was gone from Garmin's site last week.

As Mobile PC won't read BlueChart Charts properly Garmin now no longer offers a computer based nautical navigation system. Odd for them to abandon a market...

You can of course purchase one of their expensive Chart Plotters.

I'm not sure they would see it as abandoning anything. Did they ever offer nRoute/MapSource/Bluecharts as a nautical nav solution? Or is it just something that folks like yourself figured out and took advantage of?

They've got their fingers in so many pies it wouldn't surprise me if that's one pie they've completely overlooked, except for the high end.

By the way, I can't remember if we've discussed this ... does Bluecharts work properly on the new versions of MapSource?

Yes, just fine. 6.15.4 Examples attached:

I should make the point that I had to use up one of my two unlock codes to unlock my BlueChart to my GPS 20x and nRoute is the only way to use BlueCharts with a GPS 20x I'm aware of.

Actually, I've just noticed that Garmin has discontinued their BlueChart® CD-ROMS http://www8.garmin.com/cartography/mapSource/bluechartCD.jsp & BlueChart® Preprogrammed Cards http://www8.garmin.com/cartography/bluechart/ so I shouldn't be surprised.

This leaves only their BlueChart® g2 Vision & BlueChart® g2 preprogrammed data cards for their chart plotters. The result of this is no more preplanning on your home or laptop computer at all as they are no longer offering any Chart products in a format that can be used on a computer.

Looks like they're going for the high end exclusively.

Assuming you have a copy of MapSource loaded (nRoute won't install if you don't have MapSource) and that version doesn't install, Perry has all the versions on the gpsinformation site.

Sorry Dan, I've never had the original. As long as you have any version of Mapsource installed, nRoute updates will install just fine. They are actually the full version.

If you don't have Mapsource installed, if you use this link (edit: link not working) and scroll way to the bottom of the list you'll see a number of versions of nRoute. Perhaps the first one is not an update but I don't know.

Let me know if you still can't get nRoute installed. Provide details.

gpsinformation.net is an excellent resource for everything Garmin. I think you will even find a couple of links to Laptop GPS World there, too.

The nRoute file is still available on the Garmin site, but well hidden:

Thanks for that link. That will make some folks feel more comfortable downloading from the official Garmin site, I'm sure.

That link is for update purposes only. Could you give right link to the installation file of nRoute and MapSource?

Thanks
tcassidy
As was mentioned before, all versions of nRoute are complete. It won't install on your computer unless you already have MapSource though.

....... Rubbish - it's the actual nRoute file. As for MapSource, there's heaps of places showing how to get it free and legally (example) simply download and install Training Center from the Garmin site then the download and install the latest MapSource update - also from the Garmin site. After that you'll have MapSource. Training Center can then be removed and the update file deleted - it's done it's work.

Hi I have just installed nroute which was supplied to me from a very helpful Garmin agent in Australia. Can you please advise me if there is any way possible to set up my laptop so that when i am navigating the routes on the laptop display that i can use the gps functions to operate on the laptop screen aswell, as i have to use both functions. What i am asking is that i dont want to use the laptop mouse functions, just the gps

Hi Gary,

I'm not sure I understand your question. Do you mean you want to be able to touch the laptop screen to control the nRoute program instead of using the touchpad or the keyboard?

If that is your question, the answer is No. Your laptop probably does not have a touchscreen (most do not). And in any case nRoute is not able to accept commands from a touchscreen.

Garmin Mobile PC will use a touchscreen if you have a laptop with a touchscreen.

I apologize if I did not understand your question.

A GPS receiver cannot duplicate the actions of a mouse. What it can do is provide information via a navigation program such as nRoute to let you know where on Earth you are. With the data the GPS provides, nRoute can show your position, speed, direction and a number of other specialized funtions.

Not all GPS devices will work with nRoute though. If this is the difficulty you are having, download a free trial of GPS Gate and let it translate the data from you GPS to something nRoute understands.

Terry, Thanks.

Which nRoute should I download? I use a Garmin Oregon 550 as GPSr.

The last one, 2.76. They are all complete, not upgrades.

Thanks again!

Hi Kinnie,

Nice to have someone from South Africa here. Have you recovered from the World Cup partying yet?

I just bought a cruise control for my new motorcycle from a little company called Kaoko near Johannesburg. It's a great unit. Can't get anything like it in North America.

Please, help, why the nRoute can not detect my internal GPS (Panasonic Toughbook in port 3). I downloaded and installed nRoute 2.75 to my Window-XP PC, and installed & unlocked blue chart.

When start nRoute, it won't able to detect the GPS. It seems only possible to detect external GPS?

Thanks
Dwi

Try the free trial of GPS Gate. nRoute only works with Garmin PVT, a different type of GPS data than the one your internal GPS supplies (NMEA). GPS Gate can take your GPS data and output it to another COM port in a format nRoute will recognize and use.

Hi Terry,

Thank you I did try the GPS Gate, and it works. So if I want to get the internal GPS data output it to my instrument via COM port (serial orUSB ), I have to have this GPS Gate, or because of the nRoute?

Thank you
Dwi
Ken in Regina
It's because of nRoute.

Your internal GPS sends data in the NMEA format. nRoute does not understand that data. nRoute only understands Garmin's proprietary data format. GPSGate converts the NMEA data format from your internal GPS receiver into the Garmin proprietary data format so nRoute can use it.

Hi Ken, Thanks.

Is that other software (free would be good) that can read my internal NMEA format in combination with Garmin Blue Chart instead of nRoute + GPS Gate?

Thanks
Dwi
tcassidy
No, Bluechart maps are locked to the GPS you purchased them for. GPS Gate can overcome this if you have properly unlocked maps by disguising the serial number of the GPS. Therefore, even another Garmin GPS would not work with your Bluechart maps without GPS Gate.

Terry

Ken and Terry,

Thank you for your information. I will buy the GPSgate. Given the GPSgate ability, I wonder, if in case our laptop with an internal GPS is lost/stolen, whether we can trace or locate it.

Dwi
tcassidy
Make sure you look at GPS Gate Express, an inexpensive 2 COM port only version that will provide the nRoute output you need.

Unfortunately, the internal GPS only provides location data to the laptop. To trace it you would need something that could make that information available to some place you could access it. Normally, this type of tracking would need a cell chip or something of that nature.

After installed free trial of GPSGate and GooPS 2.5.1, I turn on my nroute and GooPS while driving home and "save file periodically" in the GooPS. However, when I open the google earth to track it, only portion of data available (my guess is when there is internet wireless on the region. But I thought should not depend on the internet. Please help me how to save GPS data so I could track my trip.
Thanks
Dwi
