No spoken directions from Asus Eee PC + Microsoft Streets and Trips 2009
gene225
I have used several versions of Streets & Trips and have always had spoken directions (you know "off route" and other things like that). But with 2009 and an Asus EeePC I have no spoken directions. I do have all the windows sounds, and everything else seems to work fine, but no sound in S&T.

I think my daughter did get it to work once and she gave credit to the Fn and F7(mute) key, but that does not seem to be the secret. Any Ideas? I have a trip coming up and I would like to get the sound working.

Windows XP is the OS.

Thanks for your time

Did you verify that Microsoft Anna Voice is setup correctly.

Open Control Panel, Speech item, In Text to speech tab, verify that voice selection is set to Microsoft Anna. Press the preview voice button to verify that you can hear the test sentence.

Than in S&T, make sure that the voice is not muted in full navigation screen by pressing the F7 key...

Yes, I can hear Microsoft Anna from the control panel.

I am wondering if I am confused over the F7 key. I use S&T Keys (2.54.0), and I have to use the Fn key and the F7 key to see the muted option.

When I want to hear the directions, I use the Navigation pane, is that incorrect in 2009?

I am reasonably sure my daughter did get the sound to work for about a 30 minutes when I was up in Mn. on a visit about a month ago, and we went to see the Eagles.

Yes you have to use the bottom navigation pane that displays the directions.

Try this:

1- Start navigation and navigate in full screen navigation (you can use S&T Keys F5 function and use option to navigate in full screen)

2- Once in full screen, you should see bottom navigation pane

3- In top of the screen in full navigation, there is a button toolbar, one of these buttons is the mute button (F7 button), press on it with your mouse, than use the space bar to force to listen to the spoken voice. If it is muted, try to push the mute button with a click of your mouse again and press the space bar to see if you can listen to the voice...

Thank you for your time and while playing around today I did discover that if I push the spacebar, I do get the instructions ,but only if I press the spacebar.

Gene, it means there is no problem with your Streets & Trips, or your Windows, or your computer. The only problem is that your S&T has been muted, perhaps accidentally.

Unfortunately users cannot tell if S&T has been muted just by looking at S&T interface. Perhaps Microsoft could consider enabling the starting of future versions of Streets and Trips always un-muted.

S&T Keys actually does have a line of code in it that un-mutes S&T when ever S&T is started by S&T Keys (at least this was the case in earlier S&T Keys versions).

Try to close S&T, and then just press F2 to start S&T by S&T Keys. That should enable the sound. Or just simply plot your route, start navigating/driving, and then press F7 to un-mute the program.

P.S. Yes, S&T gives voice prompts when the spacebar is pressed, even though S&T has been muted.

Hi Gene,

Sorry to hear Anna got muted somehow. If you go into the full screen navigation view [F11] while navigating you'll see a mute button on the top ribbon (top left button) Click it or hit <F7> and you'll come out of mute mode.

I was not awared of that feature, but it is still the case in S&T Keys 2009 (i have verified that the line of code is still there in version 2.54.0).

Thanks Guys. The F7 key does not do the trick, only the spacebar enables the sound. I did consider that it may be a Streets & Trip's problem so I uninstalled and reinstalled it, but nothing changed.

I just went out to the SUV and started S&T using S&T Keys to start the app, and the sound is fine.

Thanks again fellas

Gene, I'm glad your Streets and Trips now has it's sound enabled. But I think the F7-key would work, too, but the trick may be, just as Larry mentioned above, S&T needs to be in full-screen navigation mode for the F7 shortcut to work. (P.S. I honestly don't know, as I never mute it.)

I never muted it on purpose, but perhaps I accidentally did.

But I do thank everyone involved.

Gene, you are not the first user who posted about this issue. I have read 5 to 10 similar postings in the past 2 to 3 years. It can easily happen that a user mutes Streets & Trips, either purposely or accidentally, and then at a later time the user doesn't know why there is no sound.

A user may exit the program, and a few days (or weeks) later, when the program is again used for navigation, there is no sound coming from Microsoft Streets & Trips. A glance at the screen will not reveal that the program has been muted, either.

I think if sound could be enabled (un-muted) each time the program starts, this type of confusion would be prevented.
