Garmin won't let me unlock the map data because I haven't got a device ID
remprimo
I bought the new Garmin City Navigator Europe NT DVD 2010 and it arrived today. I have the BU-353 USB GPS Receiver, Installed all the software and drivers onto my ASUS 1000HE netbook and I'm having trouble 'finding' the GPS receiver AND, Garmin won't let me unlock the map data because I haven't got a device ID.

Do I need a Garmin brand GPS receiver to unlock to, or is there something that I am doing wrong?

I'm assuming that I actually have two problems -- the 'No Receiver' and the 'No unit ID' --

Will the Franson GPS Gate solve either/both of these problems?

Flying out on the morning of 12 June, so if I NEED to buy a Garmin brand receiver, I'm gonna need to move fairly quick.

If I get the Garmin unit that comes with North America software, can I ALSO unlock them AND the Europe maps to the SAME receiver?

Appreciate any help, insight, info y'all can offer ...

What Garmin program are you using with the maps?

An unlock code should have come with the DVD if you are working with MapSource. The particular data format of that DVD is not compatible with nRoute but there is a program on the web that can convert it.

When you install the driver included with the BU-353 it provides a USB to serial driver and tells you which COM port to use. The data on that COM port will not work directly with nRoute as it is the wrong format (NMEA rather than PVT). GPS Gate Express can fix that problem.

If you are using Garmin Mobile PC, you must buy the version that comes with a GPS (USB 20x or BT 10x) or you will not be able to add other locked maps to it. They require a Garmin GPS to unlock to.

I can 'see' the Bu- 353, using gpsinfo program, but when I use Garmin Mapsource IT doesn't see any gps.

The software I have loaded is Garmin City Navigator Europe NT 2010 (JUST released):

Garmin MapSource City Navigator Europe NT DVD 2010 with All Unlock, P/N: 010-10887-00 - GPS City

I have the Serial Number AND the Product Key, but Garmin wants a Unit ID Number, as well. The software comes with All Unlock, but Garmin won't give up the unlock code without the Unit ID.

So -- do I HAVE to buy a Garmin GPS (like the 18x, or will GPSGATE emulate a valid Garmin Unit ID????

AND, if I buy an 18x that comes with US and/or NorthAmerican maps, will Garmin LET me unlock those maps AND my City Navigator Europe NT maps to the SAME GPS receiver?

MapSource has not worked with a GPS since version 6.5. I don't understand what you are talking about. If you mean nRoute, you have to point it to the correct COM port, not USB. But it won't work with that NT DVD data anyway.

If You are using GarminMobilePC, then use the programs "device ID" from `Settings` `About` Software ID .. And unlock the CNEUNT2010.

Hello Bob,

The Mapsource program that comes with the City Navigator maps is not a GPS program. It is only for map management, map viewing and trip planning. It will not use a GPS because it has no GPS functions in it. For GPS tracking functions you need GPS tracking software.

To unlock Garmin maps you need a Garmin device to unlock them to. (The technical reason is that the unlock code is generated by using the Unit ID of the Garmin GPS device and the Product ID of the maps.)

Your options are:

1. You can buy Mobile PC Europe, software-only version, and this will work with your BU-353. This will give you an older version of the Europe maps, unless there is a newer version of Mobile PC Europe recently released (I don't think so). And you won't be able to use your City Navigator Europe 2010 maps with it because there is no Garmin device to unlock the maps to.

2. You can download Garmin's nRoute program for the GPS functions. You will need a Garmin GPS receiver to unlock the maps to. You cannot use the City Navigator Europe 2010 maps directly with nRoute because they are in the wrong format. You need to use GMapTool to convert the maps to a format that nRoute can use. This is not rocket science if you're technical but it's not trivial either. If you are capable of doing this and have the time, it will allow you to use your City Navigator Europe 2010 maps.

3. You can buy Mobile PC Europe bundled with the GPS20x USB GPS receiver. This will probably only be available with the Europe 2009 maps (as in #1 above) but you can use your City Navigator Europe 2010 maps by unlocking them to the GPS20x receiver.

For the short time you have, #3 is probably your best option. You can immediately use it with the built-in Europe 2009 maps and you can figure out how to unlock the Europe 2010 maps to the Garmin receiver and load them into Mobile PC when you get the time.

I hope this helps.
