First trip with MS Streets and Trips report & navigation questions
XMAN23
I just finished my first trip using Microsoft Streets and Trips GPS from NJ to Ohio and back. After a few nights learning the new to me 2009 S&T GPS features, creating a way to keep the Asus netbook charged and make a flat mount in the Prius we were ready to go for the 8 hour trip. Here's a few minor issues I had.

S&T navigation's voice announcement for a turn off a highway is to close to the exit. There is only one announcement at .3 of a mile. Other GPS I have used do a few announcements at different distances from the exit. Are there any adjustments for this?

S&T text to speech would read "SR" (State Route) as senior. There was a question in the install that asked do you want MS to be the text to voice translator, I think I said yes. Any known fix for this kind of thing.

When using navigation, I would zoom out an most of the time it would not remain at there, zooming back in. If I was using the map position this would not happen. Anyone else see this?

On the Gps Pane when the item's are not grayed out and I am in "arrange map view", I can't turn off the "mapview" or "keep position centered". Also I have not been able to turn on "dynamic turn view". I can switch from "mapview" to "navagation". Any idea whats going on?

The points of interest (hotel) were hard to find and see on my laptop zooming in works but you are looking at a very small distance. Anyway to change the scale of these like the text?

This said, Streets & Trips GPS and navigation worked great. I would recommend it as a replacement for a stand alone GPS. Others will be better than me at comparing the feature's. We left Friday night, drove as far as we could and were able find a hotel, phone number, call form the car made reservations, using S&T.

Thanks for any of your comments, Tom

Welcome to the forum, Tom.

Streets & Trips has some quirks, built up over two decades of continual development. It was not originally designed as a navigation package, so the navigation features are a bit bolt-on and unoptimized, although they're (slowly) getting better.

There are several mispronunciations in the text-to-speech engine. "Us" (as in "We") is another common one, for US highways. No known easy workarounds. Hopefully fixed in next version.

Navigation view and dynamic turn view will control zoom levels. If you do not want this to happen, then you should not use those modes.

If you uncheck "Arrange map view" and disable the whole tree, then S&T will not arrange the map for you. The controls are disabled because they're ignored. The map then stays at whatever settings you used -- it will not scroll or zoom in/out.

If you keep it checked, then you're telling S&T to manage your map for you -- it has to do something, either keeping position centered, or arranging zoom levels too. Therefore, it doesn't really make sense to turn off anything when "Arrange map view" is on, because you've explicitly told S&T that you want it to control your map view.

POI text only shows up when you're zoomed in. If you're only interested in one specific POI (like a hotel), the best way to handle it is to add a pushpin with a text bubble so it stands out. Pushpins show up at all zoom levels, and they take on the same font size as the map.
