How to backup contacts in Garmin Mobile PC?
wireman
My laptop is literally falling apart the hinges have broken and I desperately need to transfer my contacts over to my new laptop.

I have a couple hundred contacts saved so I can find these locations every year. The coordinates are saved in Mobile PC and additional data about this location is saved in Outlook. As I understand this. ???

I have spent countless hours trying to figure this out, I have called Gamin a couple of times on my last call he told me I need to back up my Outlook files. Even if I can somehow figure out how to do this I don’t believe Outlook saves the coordinates. nRoute at least saved this data. At least I can see the coordinates on the spreadsheet not that I have figured out how to link this data to the program yet.

How these 2 programs work together is a mystery to me.
From what I have surmised so far I believe the file has to be saved with a .PST extension.
I have tried to save this in Outlook, if I go to save as .PST is not selectable.

I have exported this to Excel and it saves it in a very strange way it separates the file name in separate cells labeled first name middle name exc.
Even if I were to try to attempt this one by one it would be virtually impossible there simply has to be a to save this data.

Your question is a little confusing. When you use the Contacts icon under Tools-Manage My Data in Mobile PC, it queries Outlook for your list of contacts. For each contact you can have Mobile PC assign a location based on the address of that contact. If you are setting up Favourites instead, they are internal to Mobile PC only.

Outlook files have a PST extension whether you use Mobile PC or not. The Mobile PC information about a particular contact is stored with that contact in Outlook. I have Outlook 2003 and the information appears on the 'All Fields' tab under 'GarminLocation'.

I can't say for sure if Mobile PC would see that information if loaded onto a new computer with an existing copy of Outlook containing that same PST file but I would think it should.

In simple terms, just back up your Outlook PST file to save your contact information. Locate and save the current.gpx file if you use Favourites

I too am using Outlook 2003 but I have an 'All Fields' tab under 'GarminLocation'. I can't find a "GarminLocation" ether.

On the left side under folder list I have all folders view nothing listed. When I select "contacts" the screen says contacts / my contacts then I have a choice of "contacts" or "Garmin folder", not Garmin Location like your screen shows. I can't find that anywhere.

You will have to read an article on how to set up views in Outlook. I know how I have my contacts set up to display but can't explain how I got there. I always have problems having any one computer Outlook layout match the others. You probably need address card or detailed address card view.

Regardless, the information is there and can be backed up by saving the one PST file (usually named outlook.pst).

I think I understand the difference in our setup to some extent. I have never used Mobile PC to enter contact information. I already had or updated contact information in Outlook and used Mobile PC only to provide a location based on the information I had entered in Outlook.

You are actually entering all the contact information to Outlook via Mobile PC. That's why you have a folder in Outlook called 'Garmin folder' and I don't.

Again, backing up the PST file will save all the information.
