DeLorme Street Atlas has a coronary & and offers no help

I was returning to west Georgia from Wichita, KS. The route includes a section of U.S. 78 between Memphis and Birmingham. The portion of that highway in Alabama is relatively new and not shown in most GPS units. Generally, that’s not a problem. The highway is well marked. However, going into Birmingham things have also changed.

Just so you’ll know, I thoroughly dislike driving anywhere in Birmingham. I’d rather be set on fire for 15 minutes than have to negotiate the streets there. Anyway, I cranked up DeLorme Street Atlas 2009 and help navigate through Birmingham to get to U.S, 280. I was in a location that was not mapped and SA went bananas. It didn’t know where to locate me on the map so both the driving icon and the map kept moving around even though the vehicle was not moving. SA offered absolutely no help in telling me where I was.

Queston: Are there any settings that would have allowed Street Atlas to show my location even without being on a street?

Does SA have an "off road" setting or something equivalent, or perhaps a "lock to roads" setting that can be turned off? It sounds like it's trying to lock to a nearby road and since there are none within whatever tolerance it has it goes bonkers.

The program was acting so strangely that I thought it might have loaded improperly. I closed and re-opened the program a couple of times and even re-booted the computer.

Which version are you using? SA 09 has a "lock on road" option. Look under the GPS Tab>Turn on/off various GPS functions>Options>GPS Settings>When tracking...to toggle it on/off.
SA 08 does not have this function.

I don't see that particular option in SA 2009. Could it be called 'Snap to Route'?

That's it. Was playing it off the top of my head.

I've been using DeLorme mapping programs since the early 90s. I never had an occasion to use (or not use) that feature. Thanks, guys.

As sledgehampster pointed out, the option is not available in SA 2008. It appears to have been first introduced in SA 2009 so it is no surprise we missed it.

Now I don't feel quite so stupid.
