Windows GPS software for hyperactive outdoor use.

I´m a complete newbie on GPS-Systems. I need a solution for my problem and after hours of browsing I haven´t been able to find one. So problem is following: I need software that: 1. Runs on windows or (preferred) on linux. 2. Is capable to record a route or is programmable to show only a route desired. 3. Supports "Sirf Star III" -chip and produced data. I don´t know is that relevant, that´s how new I am . But the hard part is that the software is not going to be used for road tracking. It will be used outdoors as it will be running on a laptop bolted to mountain bike. I am ready to create my own map files if there is no other choise, but if I could get the software with Global map support, it would be very, very nice . Software called GPSTuner was a close call, but it seemed to be incopatible with a Basic Windows Xp or Linux.

See if OziExplorer can do what you need.

You won't be able to run it on any computer with a mechanical hard drive. They're mechanical and electrical. The mechanical function probably won't tolerate the bouncing around from a mountain bike that's used as a mountain bike.

You might consider one of the Acer (or =) computers that uses a "chip," albeit a big chip in lieu of the hard drive. The mechanical portions of the computer are minimal.

They are called SSDs .. Solid State Drives. They're just bigger flash memory drives that are used in place of normal hard drives. You can get the eeePC and Acer Aspire One netbooks with them. I'm sure other brands have them available, too.

There's no way I would use my Aspire One with regular hard drive on my mountain bike. I bought a Garmin eTrex Legend HCx and a Garmin handlebar mount for that purpose.
