I can do an avoid area, but after doing a get directions Streets & Trips keeps routing me through the road.

Avoid area function is buggy and not always working, even if a human can find a route easily outside of the avoid area, sometimes S&T can't

Alternative that is always working is to drag the route segment yourself to make it go through another way. Or to place a pushpin used as a fake route stop and make it in the road you want S&T to go...
