Python Garmin Interface (PyGarmin) and 20x
gps2gis
Hello to all in Laptop GPS World.

I would like to create a custom, Python-based program to process GPS data and turn it in to KML data as well as write to a Spatialite table.

Have any of you utilized PyGarmin (pygarmin.org) to get position data from a Garmin 20x USB receiver, or any other Garmin? Does PyGarmin work with the 20x receiver?

I would like this program to interface directly with the receiver, but if this is not possible, does the Mobile PC software output gpx files in real time? Does Spanner do something like this? Or is there some other receiver that will output NMEA strings or other text output?

On a grander scale, does anyone have suggestions for this task: I want to create a PC-based datalogger that can display realtime positions and has the ability to draw from other GIS data (I work for a large park district with lots of proprietary layers). My thoughts are to use an Acer Aspire One or a Asus EEE PC with a 20x receiver and Open source GIS tools such as Spatialite or Quantum GIS or MapWindow. Any other suggestions?

Thanks for your time!
