Garmin Mobile PC error: Please insure software is current, & retry the setup
EHCaddis
Hi, I've just found this site & have been browsing thru a lot of the posts. Wow! Lots of info! However, after doing some searches, I haven't found any answers to my problem.

I just bought Garmin Mobile PC yesterday, installed it on my Asus Eee PC. It works good, after the necessary handshakes. I then went to Garmin's site, registered the unit (it came with the GPS unit) & downloaded the upgrade (2gig, over 4hrs.!!). When I went to install, I get this error message: "An error occurred while querying your Garmin GPS for information. Please insure software is current, & retry the setup."

Any ideas as to what I'm doing, or not doing? The GPS unit was hooked up. Thanks, gary

Try downloading WebUpdater and see if there is firmware upgrade for your GPS (20x I assume).

I had also asked tech support at Garmin & here is their reply.....

Thank you for contacting Garmin International. I will be happy to help you with this. Please disconnect the GPS 20X receiver and try again. The error occurs because the software will attempt to update the maps on the 20X, but the maps are stored on the PC, so you have to disconnect the 20X to bypass this.
I did what was suggested & it worked. It's funny that the installer specifically asked that the gps unit be hooked up though! Now for the road test part........
ps, thanks for your reply tcassidy, i see you're in Ladysmith! I'm just up the road in Parksville

Welcome to the site!
I am glad Garmin was able to assist and the solution was straight forward. Recently Garmin added Mobile PC (with GPS) to their lifetime map update via download program that was started mainly for the Nuvis. I think that is why the directions are misleading.

Ya, that would explain it. It does work good now, now i need to come up with a netbook holder for when i'm driving. I'm going to try make something, but if that fails, i'll end up buying something (but those Ram mounts are expensive!!)

Did you consider the inexpensive mount linked on the front page.

Depending on the vehicle you are using, it might meet your needs. The downside is $30 shipping to Canada for a $15 device. RAM is more expensive but is available from Canadian dealers such as GPSCity.ca.

I just checked out that link for the suction cup holder. What i don't care for is the netbook sitting up on the dash & blocking the view! I have a FJ Cruiser & was going to try & emulate the ram mount that uses the seat mounting bolt. Then come up 24" & fabricate a holder for my netbook. If i can't come up with a decent holder, i may just buy the "cheap" suctioncup mount just for the holder part & adapt that. Don't want it to look too shabby..............

The above mentioned suction cup mounts may not be suitable for every vehicle. A proper RAM mount product for your vehicle's make/model/year would likely do the job better.
