Garmin Mobile PC with Viliv S5
reno
Hi All,

I am a new member. I am from down under Australia. I wonder if anybody can help me. I have bought the little Viliv S5 (UMPC) and try to use Garmin Mobile PC with this little machine.

This device has a GPS utility in it. However, I am not able to get GPS signal to fix with this device. When I start the Garmin program, it keeps searching the signal and nothing happen. It has been over a month now, I still can't get this thing to work. Can anybody help please?

By the way, I have tried many methods. For example, using GPSgate program, using Xport program, and nothing is really work. I really don't understand what I need to do to get the Garmin to work with this little machine.

The only thing that I manage to get it works is the Garmin Map source. So, all I can do is that. It likes you use google map. I want to be able to use Garmin directional function while I am driving. Not just the map searching function.

Apparently, Mobile PC versions after 5.00.10 have trouble recognizing some internal GPS devices such as the one in the Viliv S5 and ASUS r2h. The internal GPS should work with GPS Gate though as others have had success with that approach.

What happems when you use the GPS Gate wizard to search for your internal GPS signal?

Thank you Terry.

When I set Gpsgate to Com1 - 9600 in Input tab, and set Virtualcom2, Virtualcom 5 in output tab. The Garmin program is still searching and nothing happen.

Sometimes, I run Gpsgate while the garmin is searching for the signal. The window xp would shut down automatically by itself. I have to reboot my device. When I run the garmin again, the program will still searching and nothing happen.

It is quite annoy when you don't know what is really you are missing. I hope you know what I am trying to say.

I would have thought that once you have the device that has the Gps chip in it and use the right program to run the Gps, this should work. However, this is not the case for this device.

I have tried to go through so many threads and nothing is really help with my case at all.

Does GPS Gate show a green (or at least orange) symbol in the notification bar when it is running to indicate it is receiving a signal?

Make sure you are using the latest version of Mobile PC as some versions did not recognize GPS Gate ports.

Once you are sure GPS Gate sees your GPS, start Mobile PC amd force it to scan attached (If possible, you might want to temporarily disable your internal Bluetooth). In Mobile PC, click on the satellite picture in the top right of the main screen. Click the Disable button and choose 'Use Serial GPS' on the next screen. Choose one of the GPS Gate generated COM ports and click 'Enable'.

Hi reno,

It sounds from your description that you are trying to force GPSGate to use the input from a specific port and speed (you said COM 1 @ 9600). Please do the following to help us help you:

- Do NOT run Garmin Mobile PC.

- If there is some software to enable the internal GPS to run, run it now.

- Run GPSGate.

- Right-click the GPSGate icon in the system tray and select "SETTINGS".

- Click the "SETUP WIZARD" button.

- Click the "NEXT" button ... do NOT mess with any of the settings, do NOT use the "Advanced Settings" and do NOT turn off any of the things it's going to check. Just let it look at everything and see what it finds.

Please tell us what GPSGate tells you.

I am facing same problem with my new Viliv X70 as RENO. Please if you any one could advise us to run Garmin on our UMPC. Unfortunately, the device has poor help user manual.

Hello Mohamed,

You have not provided enough information for us to help troubleshoot your problem.

Is it possible for you to download GPSGate (it's a free trial for 14 days) and do the test I described in the message immediately before yours?

If you can do that and tell us exactly what happens, that might be helpful.

Hello, Reno and Mohamed.

I bought an S5 on about June 1 and initially had terrific problems getting the GPS to talk to my Microsoft Streets and Trips. I know you are not using that application but perhaps there is one solution to the problem. I spent a lot of time with the US distributor's tech service and, between the two of us, figured out a solution.

I can tell you that it is working just fine now and I really love having S&T on my S5 and my S5 in the car but I cannot remember the fix. Let me look back into my archive to see if I can find what it is that corrected the problem.

I will let you know what I come up with. It is worth perservering with; don't give up.

Wasn't that an add-on program from Viliv (similar to xport) that took the 9600 bps from the internal GPS and supplied 4800 bps for S&T? It probably would not resolve the Garmin Mobile PC problem. You would need something like GPS Gate to find the internal GPS and provide a port Mobile PC could see.

It seems Viliv have pulled their socks up a bit on the subject of GPS interaction with navigation software. Whatever I did back in July to get my S&T working is no longer applicable.

However in exploring this issue, I have discovered that there are updates to the BIOS and EC that work on the S5 and without either XPort or GPSGate. Check you Viliv S5 System Information; it should be #106 and #021, respectively. I received the EC 021 from the US distributor; perhaps you can do the same from the distributor in your region or Viliv directly.

Finally, The distributor tech services also sent me a small app that converts the baud rate from 9600 bps to 4800 which is required by the Microsoft nav programs.

Although I cannot attach the compressed files of all (BIOS 106, EC 021, and GpsSwitch) because they are *.rar files which are not valid extensions for attaching files here, I would be happy to send them via e-mail if you PM me with your e-mail addresses.
