Altering routes without creating bogus "stops" in Microsoft Streets and Trips
rmcdo
Please forgive me if this question has been answered before, but there are 509 threads and no apparent way to search through them.

When I create a route, I sometimes want to make slight alterations. I may want to take a more scenic road for part of the trip or go around a large city. It's easy to drag the existing route to the desired road to generate the exact route I want. Unfortunately this creates a bogus "stop" on both the map and the direction list. Is there any way to eliminate this unwanted stop from both the map and the directions? Microsoft Streets and Trips 2010 allows you to rename stops so I can make it obvious these are not real stops, but I'd like to eliminate the unwanted stops altogether.

You can use 'Avoid Area' to block out sections you want to go around without adding additional stops.

It would be better if these "bogus stops" were designated by the software as Waypoints rather than as Stops and I think this has been suggested to MSFT as a future enhancement. Until that is adopted, I am afraid you are stuck with those bogus stops. I can appreciate that the routing model needs these Stops to find the optimum path, but the "Stops" designation is potentially annoying and misleading.

It would be nice to be able to right-click the yellow stops, and then have the option to Hide/Show. When hidden, the stops should be treated as "Waypoints", and when shown they should be treated as "Stops".

Cool idea!

Thanks for the suggestions. Streets and Trips 2010 allows me to change the name of stops on the Route Planner pane, and I have changed the name of all these bogus stops to "way point" which is definitely helpful. Now when I look down the list of stops, it's easy to pick out the real stops. I realize that S&T needs these way points to calculate the route, but it would be nice if I didn't have to see them on the list of stops and the list of directions as they add to the clutter.

You don't have to even put "way point" in the Stop name field; you can just highlight the name in the box and hit the spacebar and you will get a blank name.

If you really want to minimize these bogus stops, place them where there is already new direction instruction ("turn right at...", for instance), then you won't even have a new line in your driving directions. If you don't do that, you will have a bogus stop direction line that says "At , ..."
