Hi Guys I am a newbie to this and am trying to set up Garmin Mobile PC as we are doing the Mongol Rally next year. OK I have MapSource with Garmin world map loaded into it and can see that OK. BTW the MapSource is the latest version 6.15.6. I have Garmin mobile PC 5.00.10g loaded on my laptop. I go into MapSource and select an area to upload which it does. I press the upload to device button and it comes back with Mobile PC selected. I press OK and it seems to load the maps. It comes back saying 100% successful. I then go to Garmin Mobile PC, and open it, but there are no maps? If you go to browse map it just says no maps. Any Guru out there willing to help a newbie. Cheers guys

The 'demo' version of Mobile PC does not have a basemap. The map you transferred is not for the area you are presently in or you have not connected a GPS. So there is 'No Map' as far as Mobile PC is concerned.

Get a real copy of Mobile PC or, at least, find a base map that works with your copy.

Or alternately load the whole worldmap so there will be map coverage no matter where your "current location" is. (It will be Olathe, Kansas on any Garmin navigation device that has just come out of the box.)

My copy is not a demo vesion its the latest version I aquired. I have a copy of the world map by garmin loaded in mapsource do I select all the squares to load the whole map ? I also have a world map from smellybikers website that has more detail than garmins. This is what I am trying to load by selecting all the squares in mapsource and doing an upload. It comes back saying too many maps. BTW thanks for the replies guys.

There are two absolute limits that affect Mobile PC.

1. You can only include 2025 tiles ("maps") in a single mapset file on any Garmin device, including Mobile PC.
2. The mapset file must be under 2GB in size in Mobile PC.

Terry and I have just (last night) done some testing and have demonstrated that Mobile PC will not use a file that is larger than 2GB. The map tile limit (2025) in all Garmin devices is well documented.

Mapsource will stop you if you try to make the file more than 4GB but it will not stop you from selecting too many map tiles to include in one mapset as long as the resulting mapset file won't be larger than 4GB (I just tried it and I was over 4,300 map tiles without any warning).

When you are using the map selection tool in Mapsource, if you click on the MAPS tab you will see the list that you have already selected. At the bottom of that display you will see the number of map tiles selected and the projected file size. Keep those within the limits for Mobile PC and you'll be okay.

Thanks again guys for your replies. I got it sorted. I said I was a newbie and what I was doing wrong was not having the garmin programme running when I was transferring the maps DOH! I have done several transfers now and all is OK.
