POI Mega File - pushpin collections for truckers, RVers, and other travelers

Thanks Lepapehermann!! Spreading the news by word of mouth is greatly appreciated. I hope that others would look for opportunities to do the same. Thank you.

Help. I have just installed S/M and downloaded the Mega File onto my desktop, but I can't figure out how to get the file into S/M 2011. Can you help me?

What is "S/M"? Usually found on another website...

S/M is Microsoft Streets and Maps, I bought it and installed it. Then I went to the web and found a Mega File of data that needs to go into it. Don't know how to get it in there.

That would be Microsoft Streets and Trips or S&T 2011. If you downloaded the POI file as an est file, clicking on it will open it in S&T. If you downloaded a zip file, you will have to unzip it first.

If you don't see an extension (ie .est or .zip) on the file you downloaded, you have to tell Windows to show known file extensions. This can be done from Folder Options - View tab.

Hello,

I would like to know if it is possible to get the WalMart NOP .xls file that is inside the Megafile so I can use it in my Garmin GPS (Zumo 550) as a POI file.

I already tried to extract it as a .gpx file using S&T 2011 but some important data is missing from the output file, I only end up with the Name field data and the Position fields data, everything else is lost (store address, city, etc..)

Can someone help?
Many thanks,
Hermann

Have you tried www.poi-factory.com? They have a downloadable file for Walmart and many, many others in CSV format which will open in Excel.
Lepapehermann
Yes I did but the problem is that the Walmart NOP data at poi-factory needs some tweaking (not quite up to date) as opposed to the data in the Megafile that seems to be really up to date. So if someone can supply me a copy of the Walmart NOP .xls file it would be extremely appreciated.

You may be able to do it yourself. Use a file format converter to convert the megafile or copy just the Wal-crap pushpins to a new map and convert that.

You can convert .est to other formats. Or check online for the source of the data in the megafile. Perhaps on the store's own website somewhere. Your search engine is your friend.

This is exactly what I did.

If you open the GPX file in Excel, you should see all the pushpin data, a row for each pushpin. You can modify the data in the cells or add or delete in the usual way. Then, if you save that as an Excel file (XLS, XLSX) and then import that using the data import wizard, the data should be there. However, not all of the data will show by default. You must look at the Balloon tab of Properties for the pushpin set and make sure that the data columns you want displayed are ticked so that they will show in the pushpin balloons.

Sorry if I misunderstand the original post but I think you've got it backwards.

The original poster wants to get the Wal-thing entries from the megafile to a Garmin GPS device by exporting from S&T to a GPX file. It seems to me that when you do that, all that gets exported is the name and location coordinates. None of the other information, like phone number, address, etc get exported and that's the problem.

To the original poster, did you try hooking your GPS to the computer and transfer those pushpins directly to the GPS from S&T? I can't recall whether that transfers any more information than using the export to file feature.

That doesn't work, you can't transfer pushpins from within S&T, plus I need POI's not waypoints or favorites or route in the GPS.

I really need a copy of the original WalMart NOP .xls file that is used to create the Megafile.

Lepapehermann, check if Larry credits the source of the WalMart data in the Megafile.

I don't know who the owner is but I know that the file is located on his ''D'' drive and is dated May 2011, the file is called Walmart - No RV Parking.xls
