POI Mega File - pushpin collections for truckers, RVers, and other travelers
Larry
Hi GoneNomad,

What is it that you are wanting to do? You like using a built in category but you do not like the icon that is used by S&T?

Microsoft is contractually obligated to protect the built-in POI since it is data that we license. There is much more freedom with the POI Megafile as it isn't MS property.

Correct, because the built-in icons all look alike (within a given category, and only the color is different between different categories), and they disappear altogether once you zoom out a little ways (this is S&T2007, but 2011 is the same):

although it is possible to make info flags show up on the map by clicking on the entries in the list one at a time
(can't shift-click or select all):

In comparison, the megafile POIs icons are recognizable at any zoom level:

OK, so that means that that POI data is not accessible to S&T users, which is what I figured.
But is there a way to globally assign distinctive logo icons (similar to the megafile POI icons) to S&T's built-in POIs?
My assumption is that there is not any way, (except maybe by manually inserting a point at each POI, one by one, which is not practical, and not what I need).

I would like to have be able to see S&T's built-in POIs as easily as the megafile POIs that have icons that are recognizable at any zoom level. S&T's built-in POIs don't show up at all if zoomed out farther than about "20 miles" and all that is visible are tiny little squares (unless you click on one of them) that all look alike except for color, until zoomed into to within about "2 miles" at which point the nametags show up. The icons associated with the POIs in the megafile are much easier to recognize at a glance, and when traveling in an unfamiliar area, that's the kind of presentation needed to make finding one of them easier.

For example, a traveler might want to find a fast food restaurant, not necessarily any particular one, but just one of the familiar national chains, somewhere along his route. Most of these are not in the POI megafile (presumably because they are already built into S&T). Most standalone GPS nav units flunk this because they show a list arranged by distance but provide no way to find out which ones are along the route, which is something that S&T does do.

I did find a lot of the same restaurant POIs as S&T's built-in POIs here: http://poidirectory.com/poifiles/united_states/restaurants/ so maybe that's the way to go: get those POIs (and the logo icons that come with them) from there, rather than worry about trying to use S&T's built-in POIs.

As always, thanks for your help.

Is there any reason why so many of the POI sets in the megafile have only the name and Latitude/Longitude coordinates, omitting the street address?

Is there any reason you cannot POIs with just the street address (without the Lat/Long) coordinates? Or does that not work?

The reason I ask is that just from a cursory glance, I keep finding POIs in the megafile that either have no address at all (or in some case they do have the correct address), but in either case the Lat/Long is off (sometimes way off), and that's the location of the POI on the map.

Lazrry - Looking over some old threads pertaining to POIs like these:

Difficult POI search in Streets & Trips

Planning Fuel Stops en-route
http://www.laptopgpsworld.com/4500-planning-fuel-stops-en-route
Creating regions and adding push pins
http://social.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/streetsandtrips/thread/f1a0c67b-5dd2-4761-be3c-2a9be25c7b05

It becomes clear that what people want (myself included) is a way to see certain groups of POIs, either nearby or on the road ahead, without having to click on the built-in POIs one at a time in a list, and without cluttering up the screen or bogging the computer down by displaying all the POIs "pushpins" for the entire USA. And for many travelers, this is not for fixes territories as described in the last link above; instead the need will arise quickly, only be needed once, and then be gone just as quickly.

Narrowing a search down in "Find Nearby Places" by using the "Around: Selected Driving Instruction" or by inserting a short segment just to Find POIs around it (as mentioned a couple times by SpadesFlush) is a workaround, but here's the problem (which jfkelley posted about in the Difficult POI search thread): the built-in POIs are too small to show up unless zoomed way in, and their nametags can only be turned on one at a time by clicking on them in the list of nearby places, in which they are sorted by how close the are to the point or route segment, not how far away they are from the current GPS location. This makes it cumbersome and tedious to find them, especially while on the road.

The bigger icons of the imported POIs (as in the Megafile) are a lot easier to see (especially considering that they show up at the same size at any zoom level), but they can only be turned off & on in the "Legend and overview" pane, and any set is either all on or all off. That's not much of a problem when zoomed in, but when zoomed out, all those icons can blot out the map. If there was a way to apply bigger icons to the built-in POIs that would help a lot.

Also, for the third-party imported POIs, if there was some way to show only the ones in the "Find Nearby Places" pane, that would help too. Working with the imported and built-in POIs can require constant switching back and forth between the "Find Nearby Places" pane and the "Legend and overview" pane (and both can't be on at once), so if maybe there was a way to consolidate their functions into one pane, that would help, too.

Thanks again for taking the time to consider, evaluate, and hopefully recommend what I've outlined above.

Just bought Streets & Trips 2013 and loaded the wonderful POI Mega file. Have been using S & T for many years using the Discovery Owners Map Overlays for POI's. Thanks to all who helped make this Mega file, very easy to download and work with. I did notice that one of my favorite POI's is NOT included in the mega file-CUMMINS COACH CARE. As a fulltime RVer with a Cummins Engine I have used that map point several times and really need it. Is there a way I can get this added to the next Mega file update? Or a way for me to add it to my own Master Map? I am using Windows 7 with S & T 2013.

I am finding it hard to get used to the new black and white icons on the 2013 version, I miss the old color ones.

Cummins RV Coach Care POI: http://www.poi-factory.com/node/8705
(last updated 12/31/2007)

If the POI set you want is in an older Megafile, open the older Megafile into a previous version of S&T and export as GPX, then import the GPX into S&T2013.

Somebody else may be able to confirm if you can copy & paste a POI set between two different versions of S&T.
SpadesFlush
You can copy sets of pushpinss from Autoroute to S&T, I don't know why you couldn't do so between differing versions of S&T.

Thanks for help. I was able to get the Cummins file off the poi factory site and then convert it to a GPX file and add it to my master map.

New problem: My first trip using S & T 2013 on a Samsung Slate with Windows 7, (I had S & T 2010 that worked on this tablet fine). The problem is that while running down road the computer goes back to the welcome screen (the one that has your icon and that starts everything). This happens about every 5 to 10 minutes is driving us crazy, we have to keep hitting the icon to get our S & T screen back. I have checked my power settings and display settings which I have set to NEVER have the screen saver come on, in fact I have no screen saver selected. Checked the settings in S & T and they look ok. Can anyone tell me how to fix this problem?
GoneNomad
Can you clarify which screen?

Are you referring to just the normal Windows desktop, or this screen?

If the latter, your computer is logging out and logging back in, not the normal thing that happens with a screen saver or waking up from sleep.

Hi Goldchip,

Those Samsung Slates are great little devices. They running Windows 8 quite nicely too so you should be able to upgrade when the time comes.

Under tools --> options there is a setting (see screenshot below) that you could try as a workaround but it sounds like there is something else causing it to behave this way.

I removed the Cummins Coach Care collection from the POI Megafile because it had not been updated for 5 years. I see that there is a Cummins Service Centers that is from 2010. I can include that in the next update. I don't know what the difference would be.

Thanks for trying to help me. Last night after we got parked I went in to check the settings and found it on the screen saver setting page, there is a little box that was checked and set to return to the welcome or sign on screen ( the picture that Gone Nomad showed) in every 5 minutes. I unchecked it (don't know how it got checked, lol) and now all is working great.

The difference between Cummins Coach Care and Cummins Service Centers is that the Coach Care sites have RV sites usually with some hookups and they are trained to work on RV's (and most RV components) as opposed to Trucks.

I didn't know that returning to the welcome or sign on screen was even an option for the screen saver. I do think the default Windows settings activate the screen saver much too quickly for most people, causing problems like this. It may have been more appropriate when CRT monitors were the norm, but more of a PITA with today's lower power LCDs.

OK - I have the new one and have d/l the mega file.

I just can't seem to get it to do what I want. Mainly to show - say campsites on my route.

I can get the N/A map but when I open "NEW" to create a new route it reverts to 2013 S&T.

I know it is probably a simple thing - too simple for me to pick up on.

Is there a thread - "S&T 2015 with mega stuff for dummies" ?
