POI Mega File - pushpin collections for truckers, RVers, and other travelers

POI Mega File Addition: Weis Markets

This is a small GPX file (plus logo file) Mid-Atlantic regional supermarket chain that may be of some use to Forum members that might be added to the next release of the POI Mega file. I'd say their principal attraction is that they sell the best bacon in the World - Kunzler's. See http://www.kunzler.com/.

Just wondering if you had done any more work on converting these to other formats, such as .ov2 or .csv. The .csv would be pretty much usable by anyone, or could be converted to any needed format with a program like gpsbabel. If you have them, having the .bmp files for the logo's would be an even better addition.

@Malaki - I used Streets and Trips to create the GPX file. That is the only export format S&T seems to have. I know nothing of .ov2 file format. I have no special software to convert the GPX to CSV although I understand that it is not rocket science to do so. I would think anyone in need of a CSV file rather than a GPX file could do the conversion at least as well as myself.

GPSBabel can convert Streets & Trips 2007 .est files to whatever format you choose. Would this help any?

I guess it would. I will have to look into that.

I tried it out last night with a S&T 2009 file. It worked fine. The only thing is that all of the items in the data set have to be selected as a stop. Here's an example of the csv output from the Petro truckstops I have in the data:

Code:
No,Latitude,Longitude,Name
1,47.596121,-117.607956,"WA-Spokane"
2,42.280712,-122.810583,"OR-Medford"
3,39.913673,-122.197580,"CA-Corning"
I was going to try using your mega collection to see what all I'd want out if it, but it's from the 2010 version, which I didn't bother upgrading to...

You also can take a Export GPX file from S&T and open it in Excel, delete all but the Latitude, Longitude and Name fields and then save it as a .csv file. I have also saved the GPX files in TomTom itinerary format and uploaded to my TomTom - works great - but it has been awhile since I did that version.

Be sure to hide all your pushpins! Just the route will show up.

I downloaded GPSBabel but it baffled me so I tried something different.

I simply opened the GPX file into Excel 2010, deleted superflous columns, put appropriate column headings in the first row (latitude, longitude, etc.) and saved it as a TXT file at attached.

I have imported this into S&T 2010 using the Data Import Wizard with tab delimiters and it seemed to work fine.

It seems anyone who has Excel could do this for any GPX file without the complicated (?) GPSBabel or am I missing something, as usual?

Or save it as a csv as Tom suggested above.

I tried that but had a problem (can't remember what it was) so I went the tab-delimiter route which worked fine.

Is there a way to make the POI Mega file the DEFAULT map?

Today I've named it "master" and I open it (manually), and then added my start/end points and renamed it as my "trip"...its a MINOR inconvenience / xtra step.

Sometimes I forget to open the "master" file & I'd be happy if I could avoid it.

Hi BushPilot,

If you would like the POI megafile to be what opens up when you launch S&T from the start menu (rather than double-clicking on the saved .est file) you can follow the instructions given here: 5 reasons to change your default map template | Streets & Trips Team Blog

Please see attached POI CSV file and accompanying logo BMP file for:

Duane Reade Drug Stores.

This is a small retail drug store/pharmacy chain centered on New York City. It has recently been purchased by Walgreen's so it is anyone's quess as to how long the stores will remain under this flag.

I have attached the file as an EST file (2010), a CSV file for upload, a TXT (tab-delimited) file, and a logo BMP file.

I accept that this won't be very useful to you RVers and truckers out there since you cannot park near most of these stores (except in the much-hallowed New York double-parking style) but what the hey.

Using a ZIP file would solve both issues of no CSV uploads and the TXT file too big.

I love 7-zip for all the compression formats it supports and because it integrates into Windows Explorer (right-click a file or group of files and you'll see the 7zip options in the context menu). And it's free. Gotta love free.

Actually, I plan on adding .CSV to the list of file types accepted by the forum attachments feature (hopefully later tonight), and I can increase the size for .TXT, too.
