Custom POI's icons in Garmin Mobile PC
malaki86
Ok - I got my Mobile PC installed and love how it looks so far. Now for the questions to begin:

Using the POILoader, I imported a set of truckstop POI's - named Flying_J.GPI. I also have a 16x16 bmp icon named Flying_J.BMP. Both files are in the mobilepc/poi directory. Using the search, I can find any of them I want. However, I can't see any of the icons on the map in the Browse Map view.

Any ideas?

Get in the general area of one of them and zoom until you see an icon at that location. Custom POI icons don't show at the same zoom level as the builtin ones. You need to zoom at least one more level tighter. At least that's the way mine work.

Once you see the icon, is it your custom icon or a generic one?

I'm not sure how Mobile PC handles associating custom icons with custom POIs. I'll have to play with that a bit and see if I can figure it out.

Did you load them from a GPX file? If so, what does the symbol <sym> argument say?

The custom poi sets are gpi's. I've zoomed to the tightest zoom level and still can't see any poi icons - builtin or my own. The map detail level setting is set to most.

Can you get a Flying-J GPX file? I would like to take a look at both the GPI and GPX files if you can get links to them for me.

The only thing that was available for download was the csv file. I loaded that into mpc with poiloader.

I have discovered that the GPI file is the file that POI Loader creates. That's not interesting because it's not the file with the original data in it and it's not readable as text.

The CSV file contains the original data that POI Loader is converting from. That is interesting because it contains text that I can read and see what information is included with each POI. In particular, it might contain a symbol reference. That might help figure out what is happening.

Sorry about all the noise in here. Looks like this might be your answer. If this doesn't work I'm at a loss to help further:

Creating Custom Icons For Garmin Points Of Interest (POI) | Free Geography Tools

Okay, I tested it and that works.

The key is to make sure the .CSV file and the .BMP file are the exact same name and in the same folder BEFORE you run the POI Loader. It does not do any good putting the icon file into the ...\POI folder with the .GPI file. It has to be in the folder with the .CSV file before you convert with POI Loader.

Did you turn them on under Settings - Map - Map features - POI?

Settings don't appear to have any effect on Custom POIs. I tried small, medium and large labels and it still doesn't show the labels until you click on them in browse map.

Also, the icons don't show up until you're zoomed to 50metres no matter what you set the Details setting to.

Phooey, another bug to report to Garmin. Perhaps it will be fixed in 5.00.999. Anybody seen any sign of 5.00.70 yet???

Also check they are enabled in Settings - Proximity Points - Custom POI Sets.

They are/were. It appears to be the default.

Oops. It sure sounded like it should work!

Ok - I just imported a new set of POI's into Mobile PC using POILoader. I had the icon BMP file named exactly the same as the CSV file.

After I imported them, I went to add one of the new POI's. I searched the city it was in, selected the POI file, and it found it. It even showed the correct icon in the small map window. After seeing that, I went to the 'Browse Map' view. I zoomed in on the exact same location, down to the absolute closest zoom level and it never shows the icon.

Doing something wrong here?

Go to Settings > Map > Map Features > POI and make sure that it's not set to OFF.

It's set to "Medium Label"

Just an update on this, FYI. Out of curiousity I set this setting to Disabled and the custom POIs still show up. That means it simply enables and disables proximity alerts on custom POIs. It otherwise has no effect.

Malaki86,

When you browse to the exact location and zoom in, do you see ANY icon at the location? The default icon, before I figured out how to get the custom icon in, was just a very small silver circle.

If it shows up when you do a search, it should display on the map. I'm really lost as to why it doesn't. Obviously if you can search and find it and see the icon, they are in there.

Can you right-click on the .BMP file, then click on the Summary tab and see what the details are? I've attached a screenshot of the Properties from my icon that is working.

No - it shows no icon whatsoever on the 'Browse Map' view, including the default green circle. The BMP is 16x16x8bit.

I'm attaching 2 screenshots - 1 is the "Where To" showing the T/A Icon. The 2nd is the "Browse Map" of the exact same location.

The vertical and horizontal resolution of the BMP file also matter. What are they?

Is the T/A location also one of the preloaded POIs? That is, is there a possibility that your custom icon is being hidden by a standard Mobile PC icon for that same POI?

You can tell I'm really grasping at straws here.

I would like to rule out that there is any difference caused by our systems. Could you attach the original data file and BMP file that you started with and also include the GPI file that is currently in your ...\POI directory? That way I could test them all to see if I get any different behaviour here.

malaki86
No - the TA isn't part of the built in POI's. Strangely enough for Garmin, the Truckstops POI's that are built into it's database don't contain any of the big name truckstops: Flying J, Pilot, Petro, T/A, Loves, etc.

I'll get that data zipped up and sent to you asap. I just finished a long drive through bad weather and am ready to drop atm.

No rush. The forecast is for good weather for the next few days so I'm heading back to the golf course until they close for the season.

Did someone found a solution for this yet?

I have still the exact same problem. I went through the whole recipe (same name to the BMP file, change the size etc...) and I still have no icons, nothing except a black square. I have the latest version of Garmin Mobile PC, but this has nothing to do as the problem was the same for the previous versions.
malaki86
I've yet to get it to work...

As I mentioned before, I have it working here to display custom POIs with custom icons and I'm willing to take a look at someone else's files to see if I can see any differences that might be keeping it from working.

I find it a little bit annoying that you have to zoom in to 50metres in order to get the icons on custom POIs to display. It's also annoying that the labels don't ever display under any settings. Both of these have been reported to Garmin and confirmed.

The offer still stands to check files if anyone wants to post theirs.
