GlobalSat BU-353 S4 USB GPS receiver

Mine is an older model BU353 V3.2.4. Do you think the S4 drivers will work. I can't find older drivers on their site. I'll go look again. I didn't realize exactly how old my unit was.

The selector dropdown list for product model includes"BU353" and "BU354S4". Pick the one that's not the S4 and you should be good.

I'll give it a try.

They both have similar satellite displays so you can see which satellites are being used and the signal strengths of them.

This is with the notebook sitting on the kitchen table and the two receivers connected to opposite sides of the computer.

As you can see, the S4 is doing much better than the S3.

It should be pointed out that even the S3 version is doing very well for being indoors.

I'm having problems loading the BU-353 S4 drivers on on my Toshiba Tecra w764 . We just finished a 6100 mile road trip fighting the s3 dropping the signal. I found the new S4, ordered & installing but with difficulty. my profile indicated my last visit was '09. how do I view your attached images? they are too small to see in M$ viewer.

The S4 should work fine with the drivers downloaded automatically by Microsoft when it senses the device. There is no need to install separate drivers.

Terry, Thanks for you speedy reply.

Note - I bought my S4 on Amazon $33.95

I installed the S4 on my Asus netbook EeePC 1001PX w7 starter, it loaded the drivers, I verified on DMgr when USB plugged in, it showed Ports (CON & Prolific USB-to-Serial Comm Port (COM3). I ran GPSinfo, showed a bunch of birds.. hooks up fast.

However my real problem is I'm unable to load the S4 software on my Toshiba Tecra laptop w764, namely the serial com - using same process as Asus w7 starter - but shows Shows Device driver software was not sucessfully installed "USB - Serial Controller D" Failed. The Toshiba usually only loads w764, sometimes it allows w732. But if I load w732 it wants proof that 64 not available. it's close to w8 but runs w764. the restore software is w8!

I use both laptops when traveling as backups in case of conflicts. I prefer the asus netbook. It was bad when either laptop was refusing to run my s3 on our 6003 mile trip by car.

Any ideas for a fix on Toshiba is appreciated!

For Win 7 64, my computer suggests the driver at this location:

I tried it on Win8 64 and it connected automatically. I don't remember if I had already set it up but the driver details show Prolific ver 3.4.62.293

I checked the recommended one installed from the Prolific site on the Win 7 64 computer and it is the same version.

Terry,

I'm all set! It's working great on w764..

Thanks for your prodding.

Glad to hear you are up and running on the Toshiba. I hope it works better with S&T for you than the S3. The S4 is more sensitive but make sure you place it where it can get a good clear view of the sky.

My BU-353s4 connects fast but required the Prolific driver. I had a meeting about a hour away, set address in M&S13, using my new asus netbook w732.

I had a problem with it acting slow, driving looking for the turn coming up, it appeared I had another block to go but as I crossed the street the car icon quickly jumped forward and indicated I was off course!

It acted like the old non duplex days.

Terry, What I need is the Prolific USB to Serial COMM 3. I'm bringing up another ASUS netbook, old died, and can't remember how to install the Prolific drivers. I appreciate the help.

Bought this one and had the older version which quit working on me. tried on 2 different laptops and get the same results. Ill start it up fine, start up Delorme 2014 and for a lil bit it does ok, then it will act like it either shuts off or freezes. I can either unplug it and plug it back in and picks right back up or end up having to restart laptop. Did the exact same thing on my ASUS laptop and now on my HP ENVY...so kinda odd it does the same thing on 2 different ones. then sometimes after I restart it'll do fine for a while. I escort oversize loads and while in front I don't need this thing screwing up..lol. Have heard others had probs from these. ive update and re installed and got crap from their website...nothing helps. any ideas?
