What is the benefit of creating a template in Microsoft Streets and Trips?
on the road again
I am gradually learning this program with experimentation and you wonderful people.
I have three questions about this program.
  1. What is the benefit of creating a template rather than creating a map and using 'save as'?
  2. Is it possible to create a map from the whole country map ie. a map that would just show the states or provinces ones route is going through? If so how?
  3. Is there a way to run two maps side by side ... I am noticing my map is now over 1 MG know .. was wondering if I should create another map or template of our route and add other POI's to help contain the size of each individual map .. not being a techie at all am not sure if this would make sense...?

1- The only difference is that when you start a new map, it will start always with the current template to build the new map, so you won't forget/need to add manually all things you added/configure one time to your template. If you don't use a template and you want to customize the map, you will have to start again each time you create a new map. But if you save a custom map yourself using save as, and you open it each time as a beginning for a new map, it would be exactly the same thing as using it as a template. A template is just a little more convenient

2- You can create a map for everywhere you want. Just click at the 2 opposites of the country if you like and right click with the mouse, add one as a start point, the other place as a stop point, then you can trace a route that will go through the whole country if you like...

3- You cannot run 2 maps side by syde at the same time.

can run 2 S&T side by side and even track with both of them if you have 2 GPS. Of course you can't do full screen. I don't think this is the intent of the original question though.

Thanks guys!
I need to clarify myself re: question 2. If my route was taking me through Michigan, Ohio and Kentucy am I able to isolate just those states and create a map solely with those states and nothing else on the map?
Ken, I think you answered my question as I see it would require 2 receivers, 1 for each map.

You can not isolate individual sections of the map and place them in one display.

You only need more than one GPS if you intend to navigate with more than one copy of S&T. You can have as many copies open as you want and tile them or switch between them if you see an advantage in doing that.

Thanks Terry. My apologies for calling you Ken. I was just trying to cut down map size but my thinking it is 6 of one 1/2 doz. of the other. Am just looking for an Ontario source who sells 2010 ....

You should be apologizing to me. I'm much better looking than he is.

Terry, if someone wanted to actually track on multiple instances of S&T, do you suppose GPSGate and one receiver would do the job?

Aw heck, I can just test it myself .....

........

...... Yep, it works. I have my eTrex Legend HCx running and locked, GPSGate running with NMEA output on COM 2,3,4 and 5. One copy of Streets is using COM2 and the other is using the signal on COM3.

Linda, good news. If you really wanted to have two copies open and tracking at the same time, it's possible. But you have to buy an inexpensive piece of software to do it.

You don't have to pay a penny, just use Xport, it is free and try for yourself if you find yourself running two copies of S&T is ok. Personnally, i don't think that it is really usable: You won't be able to drive full screen, voice guidance may interfere between both copies if they happen at the same time, you won't be able to use S&T Keys if it is usefull for you, you will have small maps (you need a big display)...

Ooops, forgot about Xport. I had to use GPSGate because it was quickest to test by hooking up my eTrex (my other receivers either won't get a fix in my basement office or they take forever). My eTrex is straight USB, no COM driver.

Xport will work fine with the standard S&T receiver.
