GPS & Asus EeePC
paulkbiba
Has anyone tried out any laptop GPS software on the EeePC using the Windows XP install? This might make an ideal portable platform.
Marvin Hlavac

Paul, I've seen Asus EeePC in a couple of stores around here, too, and I have to admit I was tempted to buy one, even though I have no need for a new PC. The above photos illustrate how small this computer is, but I think in real life Asus EeePC looks even smaller, especially if you see one in a computer store placed right beside another laptop.

I saw people using them at CES and they make the ideal travel machines. I'll probably get one once the Windows version comes out in the first quarter.

On Friday (January 24, 2008) a Windows XP version was launched in Japan. The price is ¥50,000 ($468/£239/€320). Let's hope it'll be available to the rest of the world, soon. In the mean time numerous websites provide step-by-step instructions on how to install Windows XP on Asus EeePC.

The 'original' Eee PC comes with a 7 inch screen. Asus just unveiled today at CeBIT 2008 its new Eee PC with a larger, 9" display (1024 x 600). Later this year consumers will be able to purchase these small laptops with either Linux or Windows operating system.

Probably be pricier than the Eee, but looks like it has all the stuff of a 'real' laptop.

I think soon we will see other tiny laptops on the market even in the same price range as Eee PC. Windows devices are getting smaller in general. Asus is now showcasing a couple of its Ultra-Mobile PCs with integrated GPS receivers at CeBIT 2008.
Marvin Hlavac
DigiTimes is reporting that second-generation Eee PC will include 8.9 inch touch-screen, and possibly even GPS support. Shipments are expected to begin in May or June (2008), and the price will be around US$500.

Unrelated, but also of interest, recently I read about a possible inclusion of GPS support in new Dell laptops.

Hi.
I purchased a Asus Eeepc 700 with linux.
I also purchased Windows XP professional.
Installed perfectly and runs without any hickups.
I have a bluetooth GPS reciever and USB bluetooth stick.
I have original GPS software that runs under XP and Eeepc beautifully.
Im sure if you search in google it will help you on how and which software to install.
Goodluck.

Hi Travelbug, welcome to the forums. Which GPS software do you use with your Asus Eee PC?

EeePC 701 is perfect for gps navigation, am currently using iGo8 PC and Garmin Mobile PC on a SD card with a BU-303 usb gps.

Hi palmheel,

Welcome to Laptop GPS World.

Do you have your Asus EeePC 701 mounted somehow in your vehicle?
ThuntDon
I purchased a eee PC900 with Xp last week. My intention is to set it up with a workable version of City Select, that I am presently using with my IQ3600. Presently, I have both Delorme TOPO 6 and SA 2007 instaled on SD card. Both are too busy for my use, but the display and size is excelent for this use.

Actually, that was the question I was about to ask.

First I can add some feedback in this topic... I'm using an Asus eeePC with Garmin Mobile PC and it works very well.
I've also installed Google Earth Plus and Earth Bridge in cache mode to provide a relief / satellite view / track of our position to passengers and it's awesome !

But now, I'm indeed very interested on how to mount it in the vehicle.

So, eeePC users, if you have some experience to share, I'm listening carrefully.

I've tried those cheap solutions: Asus EEE PC Tablet & UMPC Mounts
But it hasn't worked: the location of the eeePC was getting way too low to be able to look at it comfortably.

I am new here, just ordered the Eeepc 1000H, want to run a USB GPS on this for Navigation in the car - I live in Japan, so I am looking for anyone with hands on experience with this situation.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks everyone!

Hi Hilux,

:welcome: to Laptop GPS World.

I don't own an Eee PC, but like with any PC, you can just get a plain, inexpensive, USB GPS receiver, such as GlobalSat BU-353, or Holux GR-213, or Deluo NavStick USB GPS, or any other, and it should work just fine - at least on Windows. Do you have the Windows or the Linux version of Asus Eee PC?

Beside an USB GPS receiver (about $35) you will also need a laptop GPS mapping program that covers your geographical area.. Do you have one in mind?
Hilux
Thank you Marvin, I was looking at the USB GPS receivers but still need to pick out the best one. Can you reccomend one that has a cord? I was thinking with a cord may be better so I can put the actual receiver up on the dashboard or possibly on the windshield.
I ordered the Windows version of the Eee PC, it will be here in a few days (can't wait). Now the big dilemma is the software, I am looking to find something in English that covers Japan, specifically Honshu which is the biggest Island.

I appreciate any help and thank you very much.

Hilux, I've been very happy with BU-353. Many people use it. It costs only about US$35. It comes with I think about 4 or 5 feet long cable with a USB plug. The receiver itself is weather proof and it has a magnetic base (in case you want to place it on the roof of your car). Many stores carry it, so check a local dealer for availability and price.

The more difficult part is the mapping software. I'm not familiar with any product that covers Japan, but I just did a quick Google search, and it appears there could be sources of Garmin-compatible 3rd party maps available. That would open up a possibility of using Garmin Mobile PC or Garmin nRoute products. Recently there was a thread here dealing with Garmin + Australia maps. Ken in that thread posted some info that could be of value to you, as it explains some important facts about Garmin products. Here's the link: http://www.laptopgpsworld.com/883-aussies-maps-navigation-software

If you wish to find out more about Garmin laptop GPS software products, check out our Garmin Mobile PC forum.

Marv,

I really appreciate all the advice. I am definitely going to try out the BU-353, it uses the SiRF Star III which from what I have read provides the best performance over here in Japan. I may just have to buy the software in Japanese and have my wife help me. I am good at remembering which buttons to push once I know what they mean :-) Maybe I should just learn how to read Japanese!

Hilux,

If you do try some local Japanese PC GPS software, please do let us know a few words about it. Perhaps start a new thread, and make a short (or long) review. A screenshot (or a few) would be greatly appreciated.
Hilux
thanks Marv, I will report when it all comes together. I am still waiting for my Eee PC 1000H from Newegg. I am also waiting for the JROAD 400 which is a hand held portable navigation unit. I am going to see which solution I like better and use both for different situations (I hope). I am totally new to anything GPS related so this will be a fun adventure. I will try to report something and hopefully help someone else.

Hi Rockbuggy,

:welcome: to the forums!

Do you have some kind of laptop vehicle mounting system for your EeePC? You are more than welcome to post some pictures.
Rockbuggy
Thanks for the welcome. Yes, I do have some mounting systems that I have built.

Anyone bought a new Asus Eee PC, or another mini laptop, lately?
Justaguyin_nc
I have the EeePC 904ha running Garmin Mobile PC now... XP operating system.
I really like it on the big Acer Laptop but in a small pickup it took alot of room.
The 8.9 screen is about perfect for these old eyes. Crisp and clear.
The 904ha is a 1000h with a little smaller screen and cheaper price $300.00 usa range.
I did misplace the disk for Garmin, but just networked the two machines together and transfered the software..
plugged in the gps and updated.. all went fine..
these little netbooks are very handy and quality built and light as a feather!
I can now cut down my mount I used on the acer to an acceptible size.
cheers!

How lately? :rofl"

I have an eeePC 900 20g that I run a stripped version of WinXP on. Just got the bug to try some in-car GPS so ordered the new DeLorme unit and one of those new RAM Tough Tray II mounts (both still in the mail).

I'd be glad to post some impressions on either once I have everything up and running!

I'm new to the forum, and I like all the good information here! I have a brand new eee PC 1000HE with a 10" screen running XP, and am researching GPS hardware/software for it. So far, I have found three good possibilities:
1. DeLorme Earthmate GPS LT-40 & Street Atlas USA 2009, on DVD Bundle ($60 - $70)
2. Garmin Mobile 20 Laptop GPS ($99 - $120) (USB Connection)
3. Microsoft Streets & Trips 2009 with GPS ($70 - $80)

Garmin Mobile 10 is also available with a Bluetooth connection instead of USB, but I prefer the hardwired approach.

Does anyone have any strong opinions about one of these products over the other? I'm looking for the best hardware/software package at the best price, of course! At first glance, the DeLorme package looks like the best value, but I know the Garmin standalone GPS products are excellent.

Let me know what you think! Thanks!
tcassidy
Don't get confused with the Garmin products. The Mobile 10 and 20 packages you are looking at may be the versions for pdas and smartphones. The product for laptops is Garmin Mobile PC. It is available as software only for under US $60 or with a USB GPS20x for under $100. It can also be purchased with a BT GPS10x for a little more.

I favour the software version and a separate GPS receiver if you might want to look at other navigation products and are looking for USB. The GlobalSat BU-353 GPS is good and reasonably priced.

However, you should look through the discussions on each product you are considering to see what fits your needs. Price alone is not the best way to decide on something you may use for an important and enjoyable pasttime.

Asus has a team dedicated to studying voice recognition, and it is working with third parties in both Japan and the US. The first Eee PC implementing voice-recognition should be ready before the end of the year 2009. Voice recognition and mobile use, such as GPS navigation, seems like a perfect combination. Let's wait for more details on this one.
