Reading old version files in new version of Microsoft Streets and Trips
Ken in Regina
Terry, if you can't get there using 2010, I have 2009, 2010 and 2011 if that helps. I don't have the older versions installed but that only takes a minute. Easy enough to install 2009 and see if it will go from 2009 to 2011.

I might even have 2009 if I look hard enough but 2007 is out of the question. I never did have that one.

Hi Terry,

Thanks; that is a very generous offer. Someone else is helping me. I sent a test file and they were able to open the file that I had converted from 2004 to 2007 with their version of both 2010 and 2011.

We at this point believe that the 2011 TRIAL version I have been using to be the culprit.

I am putting off any further work on this until after this coming Monday when all of my new hardware will be installed. At that point I will install a box set of the 2011 software and see if that resolves the issue.

Just as an FYI; I just spoke with a friend that is a Network consultant and they said they have run across 'limitations' with 'Trial' versions of software on occasion. Maybe MS doesn't give the trial software all of its capabilities until you have paid for it, registered it, and updated it? That would be smart on their part but if that is the case the Error message should say "You can't do that with a trial version!".

In any event it is doubtful I'll get to trying anything on S&T on Monday but will on Tuesday and I will post back and let you all know.

Thanks again for all your help. Have a nice weekend!

Thanks for keeping us in the loop. I don't believe this is a trial issue. As I said, some users did have the same problems transferring files on certain computers. However, I am glad you have someone who can do the transfer and sort it out for you. Let us know how it comes out.

Maybe it isn't the trial version. Maybe it is the computer. Maybe 2011 will 'play better' with the new hardware and that will solve it.

I just had a thought; I wondered if since my 'helper' was able to open the 04to07 files with 11 on his machine if maybe it was because my files are stored on my server. So I saved a copy locally and tried; same NoGo.

So now I'm hoping for it being the Trial Version or it being the hardware.

There is hope!

Regardless of what the problem is, once the files are converted to a format you are comfortable with in S&T 2011, there will no longer be an issue. It is the conversion that has been a difficult problem, not the use of S&T 2011 on any computer or o/s or combination thereof.

Hi Terry,

Not sure what your meaning is there. Clearly, converting is the issue.

But if someone else, using far newer hardware and Win7 o/s is able to use 2011 to open/convert 2007 files and I can't on a 9 year old machine with XP_SP3 wouldn't it seem likely that once I am using the new hardware, Win7, and the box set of S&T 2011 that I should be able to open/convert the same files?

Gosh I hope so.

If you are saying no I'd certainly like to understand your theory, and any advice then of steps that you think I should try.

Thanks again for following along and helping on this.

Why don't you just have them convert all of them and be done with it. It's time to move on!

Well does bring finality; you are right.

Two things come to mind though;
one, I'd like to solve the mystery and understand what the issue was.

And, two, since the files are my files and my problem if I can get to the point of converting them and getting them into 2011 condition on my own then that is what I feel I should do. The person helping me is doing so as a kind gesture; they have offered just what you suggest. But I prefer to see if I can work it out on my own so as not to impose on that person's time.

I'll keep you posted.

Have a nice weekend.

While I agree whole heartedly...I love to figure out why I can't do something, I am retired. I can devote time to it until I either solve the problem or get tired of it.

What you don't want to do is start judging the worth of the program based on a particular incident and have that ruin other prospects which might crop up. The process isn't important...the end product is. If you feel beholden to your Friend for converting the files, offer something in kind to balance the effect.

I am sure that with a fresh new computer and a new installation of a fully-registered current edition of S&T, all of this will quickly fall into place and your aggravation will soon be a distant memory. If the conversion worked for a typical file, I cannot see why it won't work for them all.

This may not be related at all, but most operation problems I have seen with S&T on newer machines seem to go away when S&T is "run as administrator".

We are all jumping for joy here as the S&T conversions to v2011 have all been successfully completed.

The new hardware and licensed copy from disk of the S&T 2011 seems to have been the magic combination.

I've not yet had a chance to do my daily chores using the maps. I'm sure things will be 'different' until I get used to the new version but I am also sure all will be well in the end.

Many thanks to; especially SpadesFlush, Terry, Marvin and others for your input, ideas, suggestions and tolerance of my neurosis. I couldn't have gotten to this place without your assistance.

All the best of everything to you all!
