Not bad! And the GPS receiver works even in the basement!

P.S. I should take the time one of these days to revise the Garmin Mobile PC review. It was written when the product was first released in April of 2008, and while I was familiarizing myself with it. There are some facts that are missing there, etc.

Hi Marvin,
Yes the receiver works down there but I had to go outside with the netbook and receiver and let it do it's thing there first. Garmin 20x seems to depend on the Garmin GPS receiver to verify the installation or something. No key required as far as I can see. Certainly no key on the Garmin box or on the CD.
I haven't tried it yet today. Good thing I did it last night, it was raining when I got up this am and now it's snowing quite hard.
I decide to go with the corded GPS receiver rather than Bluetooth on the advice of GPSCity.

The 20x needs a good view of the sky to obtain initial lock. After that, it may work under less than perfect conditions.

The version of Garmin Mobile PC that ships with a GPS (20x in your case) will not work with any other GPS.

The Bluetooth 10x is a much more versatile GPS than the USB 20x but is a lot more expensive.

Hi Terry,
The 10X was about 50 bucks more. By more versatile, do you mean that if I had the 10X I would be able to use the Pharos receiver.
I did put 20X on my other laptop and it was up without taking it outside so perhaps I can try it on my desktop.

The 10x provides either NMEA or PVT (Garmin) data output, so can be used directly with any navigation program. Also, being Bluetooth, you have a wider choice of where to place it.

The 20x only works directly with Garmin programs. To use it with other navigation programs, you would require GPS Gate to convert its output.

Garmin Mobile PC (the software) is identical in both cases and will only work with the included GPS (10x or 20x)

Update,
Garmin is working fine. I am probably going to take the Acer back. It's easy to handle but it turned off by itself once and I have had some trouble downloading.

HP Mini is going to be loaded with Garmin and Streets and Trips 2010 trial. Hp netbook is nicer and has the new windows 7 premium.
I have tried both GPS programs and for me the Streets and Trips looks nicer, more detail etc.

Hi ed,

It sounds like you're going to have something you'll be happy with. Keep us posted as you nail down the final setup and how it's working out.

I'm having a bit of trouble with Streets and Trips. Garmin loaded nicely on Windows 7. Graphics look better!

Hi to All, I have been using Laptop GPS World to start down the path of Laptop / Netbook GPS for the road and water. I just order Garmin Mobile PC with GPS 20X. So now I have to wait till it arrives.

Thanks for all of your comments and help in starting down this path, road and on the water we will see how it goes.

Update,
I'm getting pretty familiar with Garmin mobile and quite like it. I have S&T 2010 and Garmin on my netbook and find I use garmin almost 90%. It is a time consuming chore to set up new locations in S&T and I find Garmin easier when in a rush going to a new job site.
On one occasion when I used S&T by just putting in an address and then was forced to an alternate route to pick someone up, S&T seemed to want to send me back to the start location until I drove onto the original route near the target location, then it started correct directions.
In a similar situation Garmin redirected me forward on a new route to my target location. I did deviate but garmin seems to redirect better for me than S&T.
I intend to deliberately cause a similar situation again with S&T to see if the first episode was an error on my part.
S&T 2010 does have better detail of the area in question but so far I have not put in a location Garmin has not found.
I REPLACED ACER NETBOOK WITH THE HP MINI 311. Much better.
