Connected Services Error when starting Microsoft Streets and Trips
Kaldir
Okay, I have installed Microsoft Streets and Trips for some one in my organization and one day she opened the software and an error message appeared. The message is, "Connected Services May not work, one or more Databases Failed to open". You hit okay, then the program loads up. I have tried a repair, a full remove including cleaning the registry, deleting temp folders and basically a full clean sweep of anything Streets and Trips related. Then doing a fresh install. Open the program and get the same error. @.@ I can not figure out what the issue is here. This error happens under any login also. So its not a profile issue.

Connected services are on the internet. If someone has changed the setup on your corporate firewall recently that could affect it.

... also, there used to be a 2008 version of S&T, special edition called "Microsoft Streets & Trips 2008 with Connected Services". Is this what she has, Kaldir?
Kaldir
No she is currently using Streets and Trips 2009. There is one other person that also use's this and he does not get the error so that rules out possible file wall issues. And local firewalls are controlled through Group Policy and nothing has been changed there. But now that I think about it she did have another version installed before I installed 09. It might have been 2008.

Also when she trys to import data from an Excel sheet it gives her an error. Which I don't have right now, but I asked her to write it down for me so I could add it here.

Connected Services use the MSN Direct FM receiver. I do not recall them involving any sort of Internet connection, but I've never used it so I don't know for sure. Note: MSN Direct service has recently been cut in the Microsoft layoffs/realignment. It will continue in service until January 1, 2012, which I believe is the minimum guaranteed service period.

Kaldir, you sound like an IT guy, since you say that you installed the software for someone else. You might try debugging. First install S&T on another machine where it does work. You don't need to activate it, just use the 60-day trial. Then use Sysinternals tools, such as Process Monitor, to track the loading process on both machines.

If you see a difference between the two machines, then this could suggest some further action. It could be something as simple as a missing file or incorrect permissions. Sometimes virus scanners can cause missing files. Reinstalling might replace the file, but not reset the permissions.

And Streets & Trips is a very inexpensive piece of software. If it's just a few users, it might be less hassle just to upgrade.

Since you seem to be using the usual Windows enterprise computing infrastructure -- how much hassle would it be to wipe and rebuild the machine? Or are user profiles not stored centrally?

First try debugging using Sysinternals tools. Then try support. But on this forum, it's probably unlikely that someone has run into a similar issue. This is often true for simpler issues, but this one sounds like a more serious corrupted install.

Thats sounds like some thing I could try. Software was bought with MS volume licensing so the install I have does not need a key. I did install it on my PC to see if I would get the error which I do not, so it is some thing on the laptop. I tried it under my profile on her laptop and still got the error, so its not a profile error. (User setting ect) I will have to try what you suggested and I will let you know.

I was considering re-imaging the laptop, I have had a few other minor issues with it.

If it's also popping errors on Excel import it sounds like possibly a dll missing or mangled.

This is the error message she gets when trying to import map data from an excel sheet.

"Class not registered" indicates that the registry is missing the entry for the desired COM object. Something went seriously wrong during the install.

Re-imaging a machine is always a hassle, but in this case it's probably less hassle than actually trying to fix the corruption.
