Here's a problem that was raised about Microsoft Streets & Trips. I did some testing and I discovered that Odyssey Navigator also has this shortcoming.

I think it must be something to do with the layers in the NA mapset as the Au maps are fine, the closer you get (in terms of zoom) the more detail you get of the waterway.

Mal, if you do find out something from the R&D people, please do let us know. This is an interesting issue that people first noticed in Microsoft Streets and Trips some 6 years ago, and it's really helpful that Ken noticed that two other Navteq-based products exhibit the same behavior at various zoom levels.
What I found most interesting is that Garmin's Mobile PC does not exhibit this behaviour. As I described in the original discussion, it behaves exactly as you would expect. Once you are zoomed to the level that starts showing the detail maps, the waterway details disappear and then begin to re-appear at the appropriate zoom levels as controlled by the "Map Details" setting.
I did not notice the equivalent of a "Map Details" setting in the other three programs (S&T, iGuidance, ON). That doesn't mean they aren't there, but if they are they aren't obvious to me.

I can't see what is missing. Maybe it is because I live near an ocean and it would be difficult not to show it.

Here is one of the few rivers around here big enough to display on a Navteq map. It appears fine when zoomed as close as ON can go.

This issue, at least in Microsoft Streets and Trips (versions 2005 to 2010) has been limited to only certain water ways. Most lakes and rivers display properly.
That river doesn't show up at any zoom level beyond the base map in S&T.
It doesn't show at all in iGuidance. I'd say ON is as good as MapSource on this one.

Okay, colour me seriously embarassed.
I turns out that I did not have the City Navigator maps enabled when I did my testing in Garmin Mobile PC. I had the Metroguide Canada maps enabled. The map data in Metroguide Canada is from DMTI Spatial and is far superior to Navteq for that sort of data.
So I made sure I had City Navigator enabled in Mobile PC and tested again. I still see a difference between how much lake and river information is there but it's not as dramatic and it doesn't get any better as you zoom in.
I have iGuidance and ON on the netbook so I'll try to get a screen capture to illustrate the differences.
My apologies to Mal for making the map mistake.
