How to get Magellan Roadmate to communicate with Microsoft Streets and Trips
FlipFlop
Hi guys! I've got a problem I can't seem to figure out.

My dad's got a Toshiba laptop with Windows 7 and Microsoft Streets and Trips 2009 with the GPS receiver. I'm trying to get his Magellan Roadmate 1440 to communicate with it, and I can't seem to get it to work.

I select the configure GPS tab, and plug it in, and scan for ports, and it will not find any port except the com3 port. The GPS cable is USB to mini USB. Is this device not compatible with it? I've researched an unless I'm misunderstanding I think it meets the requirements. How come is the com3 port the only port it comes up with? I hit scan an it says com3 port available but device not found? Com3 and USB are not the same port correct? Can some one point me in the right direction?

Thanks!!

S&T will not work directly with USB ports. It requires a driver or separate program that can convert the USB port to a serial (COM) port. However, I am not sure the Magellan even outputs GPS data on the USB connection. That is what you need to check first.

ok thank you sir,I'll see what i can figure out. According to magellans site it should be compatible. The thought of a driver of some sort had crossed my mind. I'll check into that. Thanks a lot!! Just so i understand tho your simply saying i need to try an find a driver that will read the USB port lik a COM port an if its not compatible my device just won't work work in streets and trips.

I don't have a Magellan so can't say if it outputs GPS data to its USB port. Once you determine if it does, you would need something that could take that data from the USB port and present it to a COM port so S&T could find it. I do not beleive our favourite interface program, GPS Gate, can do that. It seems to be dedicated to Garmin USB devices only.

Hi FlipFlop,

:welcome: to Laptop GPS World.

Which of the two tasks are you trying to do:
  1. Use the Magellan device to send GPS location in real time to Streets & Trips
  2. Plan a trips in Streets & Trips, and then send the waypoints from S&T to Magellan

(The #1 can be done with the USB GPS receiver included with your S&T w/GPS Locator.)

I don't have a Magellan either but was wondering if GPS Gate would work like it does on the Garmin Nuvi. I posted the procedure at http://www.laptopgpsworld.com/2689-how-use-garmin-nuvi-gps-receiver-ms-streets-trips-via-gpsgate

If you check the input options of GPS Gate, you will see it only applies to Garmin USB devices. Because of that, I don't think it would work with a Magellan device.

However, older Magellan GPS devices came with a USB to serial driver. The same may still apply.
