No Audio in Streets & Trips 2010
marathondon
I recently downloaded Streets and Trips 2010 Trial version which is essentially the full version just with the added reminder to purchase a license during startup. I'm using it with an Acer notebook and the Pharos bluetooth GPS. Made connection with receiver and generated a route. It follows the route but does not provide the audio street calls. Made certain that speak street names was selected in navigation. I have no mute selections checked on my audio card and have checked that all speech capibilities are working properly with computer. I'm certainly not going to make the purchase for this software if there is no audio. Am I missing something that could be restricting it from working?

Can you be a bit more clear on what exactly isn't working?

Is there no audio directions at all? Dead silence through the entire route?

Or is it just the spoken street names that are not happening? (Eg. you get an audio instruction but it's something like, "In one half mile turn right." instead of "In one half mile turn right at Main Street.")

...ken...

Dead silence through the entire route.

marathondon, welcome to the forum. In addition to what Ken has asked, could you tell us if you hear voice direction prompts when you hit the space bar? If yes, then S&T might have been accidentally muted by pressing F7. You can un-mute S&T by pressing F7, but this can only be done while navigating.

I had read earlier about the space bar and F7 so I had given it a try. I pressed space bar while traveling and heard nothing but then I don't know if you have to be right at a street for that to work. I pressed F7 as well but then again I don't if that toggles it on and off.

The space bar (as well as the F7 shortcut) works only while GPS is connected, a route is plotted, and you are actually navigating from A to B (driving...). Give it a try next time you are in the car, and let us know if it works/doesn't work. Testing this at home in the living room may not necessarily give you the desired results.

Just went for several drives around the block and nothing I do activates any sound. Looks like Streets & Trips 2010 isn't going to work for me. Maybe Delorme Atlas is a better choice.

Try to go to Control Panel (Start > Settings > Clotrol Panel), and click on Text To Speach. There you should be able to see a "Preview Voice" button. Does that generate any voice?

...but rest assured both S&T and AR 2010 come with voice directions even in the trial version, so it is not the app. May we assume that other applications that "read" out loud are working? You might test it on something like Adobe Reader or Nuance's PDF Converter Professional (30-day free trial available for this excellent product).

A couple of days ago I verified that speech text was working perfectly in the control panel.

Just opened Excel 2007 and added speak cells and that worked perfectly!

I just realized that when I select the navigation pane that it is blank while I drive as well. The icon that represents the car moves along the desired route but the navigation pane shows nothing but a grayed out area.

I have not read anything that indicates any features being turned off in the trial version. Has anyone else experimented with the trial version?
Marvin Hlavac
That's a very useful bit of information you've just provided. Is it possible that you've ommited to enable "navigation"? In the GPS pane there should be a check-mark in front of "Provide navigation".

I want to thank everyone who has provided suggestions to help resolve my problem. I stumbled across the solution which is mentioned above. The reason I didn't notice this was because after figuring out how to make connection with my Pharos bluetooth receiver I selected start GPS tracking since it was under the same menu. This created my desired route but only gives you a visual of your current location. I'm up and running now with the confidence that the software works on my netbook platform. I will now purchase the software. I'm glad this forum is available because Microsoft appears to not have technical support for the 2010 version based on my earlier phone conversation with a technician.

Don, I'm glad you perservered to find the solution; it will be worth it.

One tip that might be of benefit: new in 2010 is the ability to rename Stops. This is especially useful if you are being guided by voice from S&T 2010 because now you can put in much more useful waypoint and stop describers than those produced by default such as road names that are more familiar to you than route numbers or names rather than street addresses.
