How to get the latest Garmin map products work with older MapSource

MapSource 6.15 is still very slow for me, and I've tried every method I've come across to get an older and new MapSource to co-exist on the same PC.

I can install a map product (Australia City Navigator 2008) that has an older version of MapSource, then a map that comes with 6.15 (Europe City Navigator v10), but if I try to replace the 6.15 exe with an older one, I get the old interface, but the program refuses to recognize the CN Europe map - there's just no dropdown box for it at all. I can get CN Europe, versions 9 and 10 to show up just fine in the 6.15 MapSource, but not the older one. Even if I only install CN10, then grab MapSource 6.11 from the Garmin site, and install - I'm told that there are no Garmin products installed on my machine!

This is a huge headache, I've moved from an older pc where both versions worked just fine, but it was very slow at redrawing. I pretty much bought a new pc just so that map scrolling would be faster, but I'm forced to use the slower version of MapSource if I want to use CN Europe 10, or any other new map. Any ideas on what I can do?

You have to use MapReverseConverter to modify the latest Garmin products so they will work with the older MapSource versions.

It looked promising, but when I point it to where CNEU10 is installed, I get "folder does not contain convertable map", however it's full of .img files, and an mdx, tdb, mdr, and trf file. Going by the program description, it sounds like it was meant for CNEU9 - did you think I meant that? For some reason, CNEU9 runs fine for me - it doesn't install v6.15 of mapsource - but CNEU10 does. This is with unlocked maps - with locked ones, from an install, I have about 250 seperate folders, and I also get the same error when pointing to any of the .gmp files in these. Any ideas as to what I might be doing wrong here? Thanks in advance

If your maps do not show up in the registry under HKLM\SOFTWARE\Garmin\MapSource\Families or FamiliesNT, they will not be seen by older MapSource versions. Products that aren't listed there are in a newer format and must be converted for MapSource verions 6.13.7 or older.

That program is not specific to Europe; I have used it for North American maps too. Make sure you are pointing to the right place. In XP, that would be C:\Documents and Settings\<your name>\Application Data\GARMIN\Maps. I think that is c:\Program Data\GARMIN\Maps in Vista.

I think we need a bit more detail on what you are trying to do and with what product, Dave. What update are you speaking of? Where is Fillmore county in Minnesota?

I found where Fillmore county is. Unfortunately, you can't search MapSource by counties. I determined the couty seat is Preston and street maps are available for that and other towns in the county. Is that the issue?

It has streets in town's and cities , but not in the rural area.

I have CNNANT v8 right through to CNNANT 2010.3 and can't see any difference in the area. However, I have no idea what the roads are supposed to look like. Could you suggest a particular section you are missing roads? Maybe you need Topo maps for Minnesota to see the roads you are looking for.

Hi Dave,

I'm looking at Garmin's City Navigator North America 2009 and also 2010 and I'm afraid I don't understand what the problem is. When I look at the rural area around Preston, Minnesota, I see all the county roads and township roads. I looked at the same areas in Google Earth with the satellite pictures turned on and every road I can see in the satellite photos are also showing on the Garmin maps.

1. What Garmin map product are you using?

2. What more are you expecting to see? Can you give us an example of something you think should be visible that isn't?

You are right. I can't find that address with any mapping program I have. S&T puts 55939 about 3 miles WNW of Harmony on CR-17 but there are no streets shown there.

Could it be one of these areas?

Dave, Are you referring to the new "enhanced" 911 addresses in rural areas?
It looks like an awful lot of the roads in this town use numbers like CR-xx in CNNT2010. Could your road also be numbered?
