How can I use Streets & Trips GPS data on my photos?
JTSTEVE
Hi to all,

How can I use Microsoft Streets and Trips GPS data on my photos? I want to keep a photo album of a trip I'm planning, and would like to be able to reference my GPS data to the photos. Is this an option, or do I need a stand alone product for this?

Hi Steve,

No, you can't use the data from Streets&Trips to do what you want. It will accumulate a track log for you but there's no way to get the necessary data out of it after the trip. And it doesn't know how to add the data to photos.

You will need a data logging program that can "listen" to your GPS receiver and accumulate a track log as you travel. Then you can run another program that will compare the date/time stamp on your photo files with a matching date/time stamp on locations in the track log file and add the geocode for that location to the photo file.

There are other discussions on Laptop GPS World on this subject. Scroll to the bottom of this page and see if there is something useful in the list of related discussions that should appear there. If that comes up dry, try the search box at the top of any page to search the forum.

Steve, welcome to the forums. The following are the first couple of threads I found by searching the topic of "geocoding photos". They may not necessarily contain the information you are looking for, but they may at least give you a bit of background info.

What camera are you using? I don't suppose it is one of those fancy ones with geotagging built in or you wouldn't be asking the question.

Then, of course, there is www.Flickr.com. You can post your photos there and you can locate the photos on a map. There are three levels of privacy if you are concerned about that sort of thing.

Another thing you can do BEFORE the trip is to consult the Flickr map for the locations you intend to visit and review the pictures other people have taken there. This can give you a surprisingly good idea of what to expect when you get there. It can also help you avoid wasting time taking the 'same-old, same-old' shot that everybody has already done.

I take a shot of the S&T screen and of any cross-street signs near the photo location and make note of them later. Not too snazzy, but it works!

Ah ha!! The old "Hold the newspaper up in front of the kidnap victim" ploy! Good thinking.
