Using Garmin Nuvi with Laptop
cc10911
Hi all, please bare with me as this is all new to me. We rec'd a Garmin Nuvi 255WT for Xmas and want to know if there is anyway it can be coordinated with our laptop to view driving directions and listen to commands. If it can what do we need to purchase to accomplish this and how do you hook this up? Is there a special program that would be required for the laptop? We travel in our motorhome alot and the larger screen of the computer would be very beneficial. We would appreciate any . Thanks!!

Hi cc10911,

Welcome to Laptop GPS World.

The following link should answer the question of how to connect Garmin Nuvi units that support this feature: http://www.laptopgpsworld.com/2689-how-use-garmin-nuvi-gps-receiver-ms-streets-trips-via-gpsgate

Also worth mentioning is that a simple laptop GPS receiver/antenna is inexpensive around $35 today (example: BU-353), and packages that include both, PC navigation software and a compatible GPS receiver cost between $60 to $100 in most cases.

Sounds like Santa was good to you! Congratulations.

Check the discussion that Marvin has mentioned but also please be aware that only some Garmin Nuvi models support the ability to transfer GPS data out the USB port. Yours might not be one of them.

Thanks for the replies. I'll start investigating the situation today. Hope this all works out. Just would be alot easier for us old folks to see the activity on the laptop screen versus the 4.3". Thanks!!!

I am new member here and also have Nuvi 350.
I am wanting to try GPSGATE. Does this work with other software besides Streets and Trips? I have new NETBOOK that I am looking to use with NUVI 350
Thanks
Jim

After more research on this forum site, I think that the NUVI 350 will not work. Anyone agree on this or know if GPSGATE will let it work

Jim,

Sorry but your asking the wrong guy. I have decided to go with the Delorme Earthmate LT40 and their 2010 map version for my laptop.

Are you happy with this setup?
I am very close to going with the Delorme Earthmate LT40 or the Microsoft Streets and Trips.

Jim,

I haven't purchased it yet, just did some reading on it. I saw it at Best Buy for $69.95 but you can get the same thing from Amazon for I believe it was $39.95 with free shipping. When I do it, it will come from Amazon.

Are you sure the one from Amazon has the LT-40? That sounds like the software-only price.

$46.54 at this moment, but prices of many products do vary often, so it is quite possible DeLorme Earthmate LT-40 was as low as $39.95 recently.

I'm sorry. I thought they were discussing the price of either Street Atlas or Streets&Trips bundled with a GPS receiver, not just a GPS receiver alone. I guess I misunderstood.

That is with the software. You don't need a DVD just for operating the GPS.
