I'm having troubles getting Microsoft Streets & Trips 2006 (yes it's old...) on my Windows XP notebook mainly because it has no CD/DVD drive, and I've tried copying it from another computer using USB, but when I try to use it it simply says:
Obviously I can't run the setup because I can't get the CD in the notebook. So if any has any ideas or solutions than I'd appreciate it a lot.

I think the problem arises because 2006 is on 2 CDs. Do you have another compute rthat you could share the CD drive from over a network? In most cases, that works fine.

Or you could just download the free trial S&T 2010 direct from the internet and buy a license later if you like it. No DVD required!

Your main problem is that you tried to copy an installed version. That won't work because, as the error message says, that doesn't get the necessary entries into the Registry. Unless you know how to edit the Registry and what entries are required, you need to install it again on the laptop.

Instead of copying the installed version from your hard drive, copy the entire CD to the USB flash drive, then on the laptop just run SETUP.EXE from the flash drive and it will install as it would from a CD.

With the older versions of Streets & Trips that came on 2 CDs, the procedure was to:

1. Copy the content of CD1 to a hard drive (or a memory stick, or some other storage media)
2. Copy the content of CD2 to the same location (the same folder). Click "Yes" when prompted to overwrite existing files.
3. Connect the above storage to the desired laptop (or a netbook), and click the setup EXE file to start the installation.

I am having the exact same problem and have followed your instructions precisely. Problem is that during installation am prompted to please insert the cd 'run CD' and no matter what I do or click on nothing happens. Can you please help with what to do Next? Thank you.

I tried the same approach with S&T 2005 and it doesn't work. Maybe they changed the CD layout. If you don't want to modify the registry to point S&T to a new location you have 2 choices as suggested before;

1.) Use a networked CD on a different computer or
2.) Download the S&T 2010 trial.

If you create a folder on the netbook and copy all the files and folders off the USB or SD storage device, you could install from that folder. Install S&T from that folder using Setup_ST.exe and choose Minimum install. S&T will recognize that folder as the RUN CD and will start with a map.

You can also create a virtual CD drive. Basically it'll create an image of the cd into a single file which is then "mounted". Once mounted, it acts exactly like a CD/DVD drive.

Do a google search for PowerISO.

I think that might be difficult to use in this situation. You would have to have both isos and some way of switching them during installation. S&T doesn't seem to give you the opportunity of choosing another drive. Or maybe it does and I missed that part.

The last time I installed one of the older S&Ts using a CD drive was before my computers had two drives though.

For some reason my PC will not allow my netbook to access the DVD drive on the network. I have marked the folder for sharing, but no access (just one more frustration!).

Netbooks are a common tool nowadays and none I'm aware of are equipped with an internal DVD drive. S&T 2006 was the last version that didn't require on line activation. Many are not aware that S&T 2010 may be legally activated on 2 computers.

USB DVD drives are priced pretty reasonable. If I had a netbook, I'd definitely have to have a DVD drive, if anything, just to install software.

Thanks, sounds like a terrific idea - this is not the first time I've run into difficulty installing software. I'm happy with both my PC and my netbook, so now it will be a matter of choosing which external drive.

Although I think a standalone USB DVD drive is a must-have for flexibility of your netbook, I am surprised you are having difficulty sharing a DVD drive from your networked computer. It works just like sharing a hard drive and would give you the tools you need while considering a separate device.

Sharing a drive usually goes easier for me if I have the same user name, password and privileges on both machines.
