Updating old map data for GMPC bought new after release of 2009 map data

I am going to take Marvin's advise and post here in hopes of getting through the unfathomable depths of Garmin support.

I am one of the lucky winners of the recent give-away of Garmin Mobile PC. I just had time yesterday to load the software and register the device. When I registered I saw that the map data was for 2008 and that there was a map upgrade available. I immediately contacted Marvin as I knew that this was bought after the release of the new map data. Wanted to be sure if he knew it was old data or if we had gotten caught in Garmin's insanity of keeping the identical part number for 2 different updates of map data. It was apparently the later. Marvin asked me to check if there was free update. When I checked my My Garmin account there was a link for a map upgrade for only $69. After searching the forums he came back saying that based on some of the threads he believed that the update should be free. he suggested that I post in the forum to get better advice on navigating Garmin's website and support offerings.

To further muddy the waters, when I checked today the registration date was listed as December 8 2009. A little difficult since I didn't install the software and go to the site to register the device until yesterday; 10 Januart 2010. I admit that my normal state of mind is dazed and confused, but this one has me WAY beyond that state.

I look forward to any light any may be able to throw on this dilemma.

I think you will have to phone Garmin and ask what is up with the registration date. I think the download is only free for a limited time and yours has expired.

If they can't sort it out, let us know.

Keith, thanks for posting it. Just for the record, the above mentioned December 8 registration date makes no sense at all. The product was ordered via Amazon.com, and it shipped on December 23rd. It was delivered to your P.O. Box address on the 26th, and you picked it up a bit later after the 26th, since it was during the holidays.

Please do contact Garmin, as Terry suggests, and post here an update.

Thank you gentleman. I will attempt to contact Garmin Customer Service by phone tomorrow. I will post the outcome of the call.

An update
I talked with Garmin support this morning, Wednesday 13th January. according to them it had been registered before on Dec. 8. I have sent all the gory details to Marvin in a private message. All I can say at this point is stay tuned for the next chapter in the never ending saga of the "elusive registration. Sounds like a bad soap opera! <lol>

Looks like the saga is over. Garmin is convinced that this is a new installation and eligible for the free map update. Said update is downloading as I type. Was having problems with the garmin downloader and Firefox not getting along so I opted to download the update manually. Since it is an exe file that is downloading I presume that one clicks on it and it does it's magic putting everything where it belongs.

Thank you all for your help and especially to Marvin for his patience and helpfulness.

I have been playing with the software a bit, but will have to put off giving it a real world workout as the primary screen on my Toshiba tablet has decided to die after 5 years. Been playing by connecting a flat screen monitor to the d-sub connector as a secondary monitor. Used to use it a lot allowing dual screen access. Ah well, time to save my pennies and get the new screen or REALLY save the pennies and get a new tablet.

I keep my fingers crossed the huge file downloads without issues, and the map update goes well. Let us know, Keith.

I think this upgrade is coursed. The download went fine. Got the 2.05GB file with no problem. Now trying to run the upgrade is another story. Click the exe file,starts to unpack the maps, 15 20 minutes later it starts to run the upgrade program. Wants to know which device to update choices are usb20 or garmin mobile pc. Choose mobile pc starts to connect and check for updates, 15 minutes later it fails with a communication error. Start over again and wait for it to unpack, 15 - 20 minutes later it finishes and starts the update program again. Asks what device to update choose usb 20. Wait another 10 - 15 minutes and it errors out with communication error.

I think I will take a rest for know and go contemplate my navel for a while

Keith, you should select the update for GPS20x, as that's the version that you have.

SUCCESS!!!!!!!! Thanks to the folks at Garmin support the updated CNNT 2010.03 maps have been installed in GMPC.

Marvin, had to update as mobile pc rather than as usb20x. last piece was ignore the directions given by the updater and DO NOT have the usb20x installed when you run the updater.

Thank you every one for the support you have given me in this endeavour. I do have to say that the folks at Garmin support were very easy to deal with. They went out of there way to make sure that things worked correctly.

Now off to explore the insides of GMPC and start saving my pennies.
