S&T Keys 2010 - Hotkeys for Microsoft Streets & Trips 2010
+ Microsoft Autoroute 2010

Introduction

This free tool is used with Microsoft Streets and Trips 2010 (and Microsoft Autoroute 2010 english version) and gives these benefits:

1- Simplify some S&T (Autoroute) operations
2- Add a small touch screen interface
3- Add new features
4- Add additional Hotkeys (keyboard shortcuts)

This program doesn’t require any installation. It is just one single small file (just over 200 KB in size). Save it to your Desktop, and then click on it when ever you need it. It is free. It contains no virus, no spyware, no adware. It can easily being removed by deleting it (it is only creating a single additionnal keys.ini files to save the setup). It is provided without warranty and on a 'use at your own risk' basis.

Requierements:

- screen vertical/horizontal resolution of minimum 600 pixels (when using "Touch screen operation" or "Keyboard/popup menu operation"), or to display help screen (typical 800X600 is OK!). Because of S&T 2010 (Autoroute 2010) new requierement of 1024X768, it is working without any problem. I have made some tests to run S&T 2010 at 800X600 after installation (with small buttons for the top tools toolbar to save space) and it seems to work (after limited testing), but the screen is tight and the map seems very small.
- fast computer (because of scripting nature of S&T Keys, some functions are timing related and erratic behaviour may occur on a very slow system. Typical pentium IV, 1.7 GHz is enough which is the based test system under windows XP)
- Windows XP operating system (i don't know if it is working correctly with Vista because i don't have a Vista computer installed with S&T to test it now...).
- Microsoft Streets and Trips 2010 (and/or Microsoft Autoroute 2010 english) version. It cannot work with any other version because each version of S&T Keys is customized to work for a specific version of S&T.

S&T Keys 2010 v3.55.9 (13 September 2011)

N.B. The following screenshots may show a different version of S&T, but all functionnality is the same.

Section 1: Operations

1.1 Operating Modes

S&T Keys can be operated in 3 differents modes:

By using your keyboard with new HotKeys (see 1- Keyboard/Hotkeys operation), by using a touch screen or any pointing device (see 2- Touch screen operation), or by using a popup menu with your keyboard to make things easier (see 3- Keyboard/popup menu operation).

N.B. For the first time user, it is recommended to use the "2-Touch screen operation" or "3-Keyboard/popup menu operation" described below. It will help you learn which function cannot be used in specifics situations by seeing the buttons that are disabled on the screen, which is difficult to learn in "1-Keyboard/Hotkeys operation" mode.

1- Keyboard/Hotkeys operation

F1 – Pressing the <F1> key toggles the list of available hotkeys (help screen)

Figure 1

This Figure 1 screen is divided in 3 sections:

a) S&T Keys - hotkeys: First part is showing the keyboard keys you may use and a small description for each of them. These Hotkeys are always available in any situation when using S&T.

F1: toggle the display of the above help screen to remember easily the keys to operate S&T keys with the keyboard

F2: this key has a unique function. It is the only key that could be functionnal even when S&T is not started. With this key, you can start Microsoft S&T 2010, minimize it to access another application and restore S&T window on screen when pressed again. This key is the Start key. You will see later that this key is programmable and can be "Scroll Lock" or "F2" key (see 2.1.2 Options panel: Start). This key can also be completely disabled.

F4: toggle the onscreen popup menu that can be used to operate S&T Keys easily with the keyboard without having to remember all the HotKeys. This popup menu is also context sensitive, it will disable all Hotkeys that can not be used in a specific situation.

F5: this is one of the key you will use most of the time. It allows to start gps navigation (usually in full-screen mode) after you enter a destination in S&T Route Planner. You can configure exactly the navigation behavior of this key from the options menu.

F6: this one is to insert a pushpin at current gps location. It can be used as an example, when you are driving and are located at an interesting place you want to remember, and you don't want to bother playing with the mouse to mark your precious place you can identify later (by typing a description after driving). This function has many benefit, because it would work in any situation, even when navigating in full screen. It would take care also to switch to correct map mode so the pushpin can be used.

Tips: For maximum precision using F6 function, zoomin the map (maximum zooming = maximum precision) and slow your car (there is a small variable lag before the pushpin will be on the map, depending of actual navigation mode) when possible.

Tips: If the gps icon cannot be found, it will let the pushpin in the center of the screen so you can click it to set it on the map. This could be used as a quicky to place many pushpins on the map when the gps navigation if off. In this case, each time you are using F6 key, it will bring a pushpin in the center of the map, so you can use your mouse to place it later where you want it (it avoid to click with the mouse on the pushpin button).

Tips: When using this function, avoid using icons with a RED color. This will fool the GPS icon search logic and may keep it to find the GPS icon correctly (which is also RED). The GPS search logic can generally deal with a single red small icon, or single RED end point on the map, but not if there are more then one RED items. If you activated in S&T "find near by" categories with RED icons, you may get into problem if they are found on your map by the search logic. In this situation, the search logic may switch to a slowlier search technic trying to search a limited region in the center of the screen, to find the GPS icon.

Shift - Pause: this hotkey is not normally used when driving, but more when you want to stop driving and plan for a new ride. It will stop the gps navigation, cleanup S&T not needed windows and zoomout the complete actual route (press shift and pause keys at the same time).

Tips: Shift - Pause function can also be used when gps navigation is disabled, as a quick way to show the complete actual route on screen (for example if you are lost on the map and you cannot see the route anymore).

F10: this hotkey will allow you to find interesting nearby places from S&T Point Of Interest database, around your actual gps location. You can use this function even when navigating in full-screen, by defaut it will locate POI around your actual position for the around distance you used the last time. It will manage the navigation switching mode necessary to make this function possible.

If the GPS icon is not found, the "find nearby" will be made from the center of the screen.

End: this hotkey will allow you to cancel the actual route by cleaning everything in Route planner and makes you ready to enter a new destination. Once the destination is entered (you have max around 5mn to do it), navigation will continue according to F5 panel options (see 2.1.3).

Tips: The END hotkey after cleaning the route will popup S&T "Find window" so user can enter his new destination. It will wait as long as 5mn that the "Find window" goes off screen before continuing navigation. If user change his mind and doesn't want to enter a new destination, he can just press the <ESC> key or close the "Find window" with the mouse/touch screen: navigation process will not happen after that.

Pause: this hotkey can be used to pause gps navigation for a short moment and restart it when you are ready to continue. It will do almost nothing else and won't change S&T display and modes.

PgUp/PgDn: these hotkeys can be used to zoomout/zoomin the current map. The difference of these keys as compared to S&T +/- zoom keys is that the zoom increment level is programmable (can be programmed for precise zooming). To allow this functionnality in fullscreen mode, it must switch to normal screen mode 1st before doing the zooming function (user could press <F11> key to return fullscreen navigation when zooming is completed). There is an option in the zoom panel to control the behavior of zooming functions in fullscreen: instead of using the programmable zoom increment, it could be configure to use the default (10) fix increment of S&T and avoid screen mode changes while zooming.

Tips: To use PgUp/PgDn hotkeys while navigating with a big map (near fullscreen navigation), see section 2.1.1.

Home: this hotkey will create a route that will bring you back to home, from your current gps position. Your home location is programmable in the options panel.

Insert: this hotkey will enable/disable the gps trail function, it will leave a trail on the map showing you the route where you went.

Shift - F6: this hotkey toggles hides/shows all pushpins sets. This allows to quickly remove all pushpins that could cause problems while navigating. The 1st time the function is used, it will hide all pushpins sets (if at least one is not already hidden), the 2nd time, if they are all hidden, they will all appear on screen. This hotkey can also be used from fullscreen navigation (press <F11> to return to fullscreen navigation when done).

b) Full-screen mode hotkeys: 2nd part is showing the keyboard keys you may only use while doing gps navigation in full-screen mode (this mode can be recognized when there is no S&T top file menu and similar)

N/R/D/Y: these keys allow to configure the map view when not in map navigation view mode. These are all the possible configurations using "center", "dynamic turn view" and "rotate map" options in the gps S&T panel.
To experiment with these functions, navigate in map view mode and use then to change the way the map is displayed.

Q/S/T/H/P: these powerfull hotkeys are used with an already specified route. When you want to experiment how the route can be configured, like if you want to take the "quickest" (S&T default) route between start and end points, the "shortest" route (smallest distance), to completly avoid "toll" roads, to avoid all kind of "highways" as for an example if you want to ride in small villages, and last one is to choose a route to your preference as choosen in the options panel.

Tips: If you are using these hotkeys with navigation off, it will just reconfigure the complete route to the mode specified (quickest, shortest, etc). If you are using one of these hotkeys while navigation is already started, after route reconfiguration, it will continue navigation as specified with F5 hotkey navigation options.

Del: this hotkey is one of the most important one when navigating. You will use it to delete the last waypoints that are behind your actual gps location (green or yellow points on your route in Route planner). Why needing to delete these old waypoints when not needed anymore: because one day if you are leaving the actual route (going off-route) and S&T recalcule a new route for you, you may discover a surprise that it may bring you back in the wrong direction where you were before than where you want to go next (or making an unneeded turn to go to an old waypoint). You can never understand the need of this function until you got the problem while navigating.

O/A/G: these hotkeys are the missing modes related to S&T gps panel. The "O" will allow you to switch navigation guidance OFF (and related panel at the bottom) screen, the "A" hotkey disable/enable S&T to arrange the map view while navigating and the "G" which is the one that is more usefull will allow to switch between 3D navigation view mode and normal 2D map view mode.

Tips: when doing gps navigation in fullscreen mode, the bottom guidance pane (where it is written the next street direction) can be completely removed from screen, actually driving with a map covering your entire screen. To remove the bottom guidance pane, just press "O" hotkey.

Tips: when doing gps navigation in fullscreen mode, you may need to see a better overview of your trip while still seeing your current gps location. By pressing the "A" hotkey, this will force S&T to release control of the map while navigating. You may then use the "PgUp" and "PgDn" hotkeys to zoomout/zoomin the trip, and also the cursors keys to move a little around your current position (don't forget to zoomout first before using the cursor keys or you may loose completly the GPS icon location on the map). When completed, you can push "A" hotkey to return map control to S&T. As soon as the gps icon position is refreshed on screen, the map will reajust to locate the gps position on screen where it should be according to the other choosen S&T modes.

F8: this hotkey allow to toggle the favorite destination panel, where you can store your favorite destination, so you don't have to type them every time they are needed.

c) Streets & Trips - hotkeys: Third part is showing the keyboard keys that are not related to S&T Keys, but usual Street & Trips Hotkeys that are usefull to remember when using S&T Keys. Refer to S&T help file for information about these hotkeys.

Tips: Some S&T Keys functions must toggle S&T screen mode to operate correctly. As an example, using F6 or F10 while navigating in fullscreen mode will revert to normal window mode. After the function has completed, you may use S&T F11 hotkey to return to fullscreen gps navigation mode.

F11: while this is normal S&T hotkey to toggle fullscreen navigation mode, it can also be used from the touch screen panel (see 2- Touch screen operation).

2- Touch screen operation

Figure 2

As you can see in the previous Figure 2 map, S&T Keys brings 3 onscreen touch screen buttons: "-","+","F4". If your computer has a touch screen interface or a similar kind of pointing device (a simple mouse is also working), you can press one of these 3 transparent grey buttons:

+/-: zoomin/zoomout of the zoom increment as programmed in the options panel (using same zoom increment as S&T when navigating in fullscreen mode).

Menu F4: brings touch screen popup menu panel. This will allow all kind of functions by pressing a single button on screen from this menu panel (see below in Figure 3).

Important: You will notice that while processing some functions, these "-","+","F4" screen transparent buttons may disappeared from the screen while S&T Keys is busy and cannot process another button.

Figure 3

The previous Figure 3 picture shows the touch screen menu. In this example, you can see that all buttons are enables: in real life, some buttons will be disabled when their associated functions are not possible in a specific situation (fullscreen/not fullscreen/navigation mode, navigation disabled, etc). To activate a function, just press on your touch screen (or using any other pointing device like a mouse) the button associated to the desired function. This touch screen panel will disappear after pressing a button (it can also being removed by pressing X close window button at top right of the panel, by pressing keyboard F4 or ESC keys.

To get instruction about each of these buttons, see related function in the "1- Keyboard/Hotkeys operation" mode above.

Additional functions not available in "1- Keyboard/Hotkeys operation":

Z,X,C,V: These buttons allow when not in fullscreen navigation mode to shows/hide most of the important S&T panels like "GPS Task Pane" left panel, "Driving guidance" bottom panel, "Route Planner" left panel and route "Directions" top panel.

on-screen keyboard: this button allows to bring on screen the configured on-screen keyboard in the options panel. This can be used when some text input is needed in a specific field and a real keyboard is not available.

options: this bring on-screen the S&T Keys options panel configuration. This panel allow to configure many S&T keys behavior to meet user taste (see Section 2: Configuration below).

3- Keyboard/popup menu operation

This mode of operation is very usefull for the first time user instead of using "1- Keyboard/Hotkeys operation". It allows to use a keyboard only as input device and being assisted with the touch screen panel as displayed in Figure 3 above. This is very important because it will show to the novice user which function is possible or not, by disabling the buttons (gray color) on the menu panel.

To use this mode, user press the keyboard "F4" key that will bring the same panel as in "2- Touch screen operation" mode above. Then user is pressing the keyboard key that is written at the left of the associated touch screen menu button to activate this function, which makes the panel get off the screen.

Tips: This mode of operation will allow additional functions in some cases that are not even possible with the "1- Keyboard/Hotkeys operation" mode as explained above. As an example, the F8 function is not available when not in full screen navigation mode to allow toggling pushpin text On/OFF. All other functions that are also related to a key letter are not available also when not in fullscreen navigation mode. But they are always available using the popup menu.

1.2 Tray Menu

Figure 3A

Figure 3A shows the S&T Keys tray menu icon. To activate it, use your mouse right key button and click on the "K" icon in the windows tasktray. This menu allows:
  • Display hotkeys help popup
  • Display the options panel popup to configure S&T Keys
  • Check for a new S&T Keys software update
  • Exit and terminate S&T Keys
  • Access all S&T Keys forum threads for:
  • Release information of S&T Keys (Visit website)
  • Bugs report of S&T Keys
  • Wish list of S&T Keys
  • General Comments and Questions about S&T Keys
1.3 Tray S&T Keys Version Information

Figure 3B

Figure 3B shows how to get S&T Keys version information from the tray "K" icon. Just hoover your mouse on the "K" S&T Keys icon to display the release version for a short moment.

1.4 S&T navigation options configuration

Figure 3C

Figure 3C shows default options that can be configured in S&T options panel, to be compatible with S&T keys 2010. The "automatic re-route" option can be enable, but user should take care of some possible annoyance, like if going off route for any reason, S&T may calculate a new route. This could have some side effects of returning to a previous waypoint already seen before (if old waypoint was not removed). If this option is not enable, user will have to press F3 to calculate a new route when going off route, as needed.

Section 2: Configuration

2.1 Options panel

2.1.1 Options panel: General

Figure 4

Figure 4 shows the General tab of options panel: in this panel, you can configure:
  • S&T Keys start at windows startup
  • Use mouse buttons for spoken instructions control while navigating in full screen
  • Open the last used file in S&T or create a new one
  • Starts with route planner or GPS task pane open
  • Starts with no left pane open at all (no route planner neither GPS task pane)
  • Starts with no left pane, neither direction pane open
  • If you want to control Sreets and Trips or Autoroute software

When you select the option to control the voice spoken instructions with your mouse, you can click mouse secondary button to repeat the voice guidance instruction (double click to get the next spoken instruction). You may also configure another mouse button using the combo "Spoken Next Butn" to define another mouse button that when pressed will provide the next spoken instruction (instead of using a double click on the mouse secondary button above). These mouse buttons functions when activated will only work in full screen navigation.

Tips: By using your mouse for spoken instructions control, the mouse or any other pointing device (wireless or other) can be used as a kind of remote control if you want to navigate with audio only, without keeping an eye on screen. Using a single ear headphone, you can use the mouse to get voice guidance spoken instructions as desired (current and next instruction). The mouse can be located near you, for easy buttons access.

Tips: Take care that if you configure the mouse primary button for the spoken next instruction, you won't be able to click with your mouse on the touch screen buttons (+,-,F4), neither in the full screen S&T navigation toolbar. You would need to use the keyboard to exit full screen navigation (F11 key) to release the mouse buttons to their normal functions.

Tips: Mouse remote control additionnal details (and experiment).

You can verify (download/install) if a S&T Keys software update is available using an internet connection by pressing the button in this menu.

Tips: By using the option "Start with left Pane close" or better "Start with left + direc. Panes close", you can simulate driving with a large map without going in fullscreen navigation (disable option to navigate in fullscreen, see 2.1.3). This could be usefull for user needing to use PgUp/PgDn hotkeys to get precise map zooming functions (because precise zooming is not available in fullscreen navigation). To enlarge S&T map to maximum size, you can also configure S&T buttons toolbar to use small icons instead of large ones.

Tips: When changing from Autoroute to Streets and Trips control, keys file name will change from "AR Keys.exe" to "S&T Keys.exe" and it will restart itself if you have both softwares. Both softwares may be running at the same time, but keys will control only the one configured. When configured for Autoroute operation, all functions are very similars and not shown in this manual. If only one of the software is installed, the other choice will be grayed out in this menu. Autoroute support has been tested with the english version only. Other languages versions of autoroute are not supported.

2.1.2 Options panel: Start

Figure 5

Figure 5 shows the Start tab of options panel. This panel allows to configure the starting behavior of S&T regarding GPS settings. In this panel, you can configure:
  • If GPS tracking is enabled at startup (please disable S&T GPS tracking option at startup)
  • The different GPS tracking options possible
  • Restore recommended settings button will configure these options for you
  • F2 hotkey enabled allows to control if this hotkey is active all the time to minimize/restore S&T window
  • You can choose between F2 or ScrLck (Scroll Lock) key as start hotkey

2.1.3 Options panel: Navigate

Figure 6

Figure 6 shows the Navigate tab of the options panel. Here you will configure the navigation behavior when using the F5 keys to navigate. In this panel you can configure:
  • GPS tracking options
  • Restore recommended settings will configure these GPS options for you
  • If fullscreen navigation is desired
  • If calendar mode navigation is desired

When you select the option "Navigate in calendar mode", this will modify the behavior of all navigation operations with S&T Keys. The functions hotkeys F5, HOME, END, F8 (from menu or from fullscreen), Del (and also q,s,t,h,p hotkeys if already navigating when pressed in fullscreen mode or with popup menu) will now operate in calendar mode. Only Pause and Shift - Pause are not operating in calendar mode all the time.

What is calendar mode? Calendar mode allows to display date/time estimates in S&T direction pane based on current date/time start time when you began navigating your route. It allows to see at what time you would be at a specific stop if navigating at a mean speed.

Figure 6A

Figure 6A gives an idea of direction pane display in calendar mode. Let say you started navigating your route on January 30 at 2:37pm, you will see in the direction pane that date/time displayed is based on your real start date/time and you can get a rough estimate of where you will be at 4:25pm (stay on I-295). The estimate is based on your mean driving speed. It can be tuned by changing the driving speed cursors in S&T "More route options" panel as can be seen in figure 6B. For each road type, you can tune if you are slowlier or faster than average speed.

Figure 6B

What is the precision of calendar mode? Well it is limited by how close you can match the driving speed configured in the "More route options", so the closer you are from your navigation start time, the more precise you would be.
When operating in calendar mode, S&T Keys is adding dummy "My current location (GPS)" stop (stop #2) in S&T route planner as needed to tweak the direction pane to display current date/time navigation estimates, as can be seen in figure 6C. So right after starting navigation, you will drive through stop #2 (the dummy one) that you can just ignore and continue your route toward stop #3.

Figure 6C

When you are navigating in calendar mode, you can navigate fullscreen and then press the v hotkey on your keyboard (or in the popup menu activated by F4 key) to quickly switch to direction pane view and this removes also driving guidance pane at the bottom of S&T screen to make more room to display the directions. When finish, you may just press again F11 key to return to fullscreen navigation.

Calendar navigation mode is best suited with user who is not planning carefully stops throughout the day. Let's say as a tourist you are travelling your route, then you decide to stop a couple hours to look at the landscape. You just have to pause the navigation (using Pause hotkey) and when you restart navigating using the F5 hotkey, all date/time estimates in the direction pane will refresh from your new navigation start time after the landscape stop. You may also force a refresh anytime by using any of these hotkeys: Home, End, F8 (through popup menu or fullscreen) , F5, Del (and also q,s,t,h,p hotkeys if already navigating when pressed in fullscreen mode or with popup menu). As you will notice, each time you are using any of these specified hotkeys, it will take care to clean the dummy "My current location (GPS)" stop (stop #2) if it is needed.

When navigating in calendar mode, each time you start navigating, S&T Keys force a route recalculation from your current GPS location to your first location in your route. To make it work correctly, you must delete waypoints using the Del hotkey (or Del function in F4 popup menu) each time you drive and the waypoint is now behind you on your route. As an example, if you are looking at Figure 6C, when you drive after waypoint #3 (I-95 Express Ln), you must press the Del hotkey one time to remove waypoint #3 (I-95 Express Ln) from the route (this will recalculate the route and refresh date/time estimates at the same time). In practice, you can postpone waypoint delete operation until you pause and restart navigation: but you will have to delete many old waypoints and the Del hotkey can delete only a single waypoint at the same time (you would have to delete them manually in route planner and restart navigation with F5 hotkey yourself). Usually, if you are deleting 1 waypoint by using the Del key, it would be very often waypoint #3 (sometimes waypoint #2) that you will delete this way.

Let's say you want to pause navigation without refreshing date/time in direction pane, neither recalculating your route, you can press the Pause hotkey to stop/restart navigation quickly without changing anything else. But the date/time estimates in direction pane will drift for the time you paused.

When driving in calendar mode, S&T Keys force configuration of S&T to remove any automatic generated stops: this allows to drive 24hr a day without any stop. This limitation is needed so direction pane is always matching correct calendar date/time when driving continously. If you really want to stop let's say 3 night at stop #6, you will have to scheduled this stop manually yourself in S&T. Then calendar mode will give you a rough estimate at what time and what calendar date you will be there in S&T direction pane while you are navigating.

Date estimates will usually match the real calendar date. One exception is near the end of current month you are driving. In january for example, if you started your route on january 31 and driving for three days, the estimates in direction pane will show calendar date 31,32,33. It will revert to correct calendar date estimates in direction pane as soon as you restart navigation in february 1st or later by using any hotkeys (Del, F8, F5, Home, End and also q,s,t,h,p hotkeys if already navigating when pressed in fullscreen mode or with popup menu).

Pressing F5 hotkey anytime while navigating will recalculate the route from current GPS position to 1st stop point and refresh all date/time estimates from that new start GPS position (but don't do that if you forgot to delete old waypoints on your route).

S&T auto reroute calculation option is not compatible with S&T Keys calendar mode. It should be disabled. If not, each time user is going of route, a new route will be recalculated that will destroy the calendar estimates. Same problem while using the F3 key in S&T to manually recalculate a route in case of problem: this will destroy calendar estimates. In both cases, user can just press S&T Keys F5 hotkey to recalculate a new route with fresh date/time estimates, but this will take a lot of time. F3 S&T function has not been modified to support calendar mode to allow very quick route recalculation while driving in case of going off route problems.

Calendar mode

Pro:
  • Allow to navigate with pseudo real date/time estimates in direction pane view of S&T
  • Estimates are refresh automatically each time user restart navigation by using any of the navigation related hotkeys
  • User can stop anytime navigating even for a long time and when restarting navigation, he would get fresh new date/time estimates for the rest of the route based from that new start point after the last non planned stop.
  • User can quickly see the direction pane even while navigating fullscreen by pressing v hotkey then F11 key to return fullscreen navigation

Con:
  • Add extra time to configure for calendar date/time estimates that make all navigation hotkeys much slowlier
  • User has to delete each old waypoint (Del hotkey) when it is behind him to avoid route recalculation to drive him back to an old stop on his route
  • Date/times estimates are based on a mean S&T driving speed that can be tweak, but not easily (slowlier/faster than unspecified average speed)
  • Estimates are not refresh realtime, but only when user press a navigation hotkey with S&T Keys
  • Not compatible with S&T auto route recalculation option which will destroy estimates (not compatible with F3 manual S&T route recalculation neither)
  • Disable S&T option to create automatic start/stop navigation time every day. User has to schedule all stops manually if needed

2.1.4 Options panel: Zoom and On Screen Display

Figure 7

Figure 7 shows the Zoom and OSD tab of options panel. Here you can configure:
  • The zoom increment used by PgUp/PgDn hotkeys and touch screen +/- buttons
  • The behavior of zooming in fullscreen mode (default S&T zooming or programmable zooming needing a screen mode toggle)
  • If you don't want/need the 3 transparent gray touchscreen buttons, you can disable them here

2.1.5 Options panel: Turn Beep

Figure 8

Figure 8 shows the Turn beep tab of options panel. Here you can enable if you want a "turn beep" or not and what turn beep sound you want to use. The turn beep is usefull to warn you that you may have missed the last turn. It will beep the selected sound tone when the GPS icon is exactly at location where you should have turned.

2.1.6 Options panel: Preferred Road Types

Figure 9

Figure 9 shows the Preferred Road Types tab of options panel. In this panel, you will configure the preferred setting for the route planning when using the hotkey "P".

2.1.7 Options panel: Home and Favorite Destinations

Figure 10

Figure 10 shows the Home and Favorite destinations tab of options panel. In this panel, you will configure your home location, in the form of an address or in the form of GPS latitude and longitude location. You may also configure the favorite destinations used with "F8" hotkey by pressing the button that will bring the favorite configuration menu (see Figure 11).

Figure 11

Figure 11 is the favorite destinations menu (that is also toggle by "F8" key) and allows:
  • Create a new destination in the list
  • Delete the current destination in the list
  • Edit the current destination in the list

Figure 13 is the Reset tab of options panel. It allows to reset all S&T Keys configuration options to default value, except Home location and Favorites destinations which are untouched.

Section 3: Getting Started

3.1 Step by Step Instructions

The first time you are using the program, S&T Keys will start S&T. While starting and everytime S&T Keys is busy, you may see a splash screen asking you not to touch the keyboard neither your mouse not to interfere in S&T Keys operation.

When this splash screen is gone and S&T is started, press F4 key, then click on the "options" button to open the options panel. You may now configure all options to your taste, by looking at "Section 2: Configuration". One option you have to set is your home location: see "2.1.7 Options panel: Home and Favorite Destinations". But before setting your home location, you should try to search your address in S&T find prompt to try to locate your home. Then if it was successfull, you can paste the search information in the "2.1.7 Options panel: Home and Favorite Destinations". If find your home address is not working, you can zoom/pan the map to your home location, hover the mouse at your estimated house position and look at the gps location in S&T right bottom corner. Take a note of this location and enter it in the "2.1.7 Options panel: Home and Favorite Destinations", in latitude, longitude form. Another option you may set to your taste is your preferred route type see "2.1.6 Options panel: Preferred Road Types". You may configure this road type to your own taste if needed. Most other options in the options panel can be probably left to default values for first time user. Once the configuration is completed, just close the options panel, there is no need to save the configuration by yourself.

Configure S&T navigate options for compatibility with S&T Keys 2010. See section 1.4 for details.

From that point, if you want to return to a different program, press the start key (F2 key usually) if it is enabled: it will minimize S&T. Press F2 again and it will restore S&T window on screen. If S&T is closed and S&T Keys is still active in the windows task tray, press F2 (start key) and it will start S&T. Each time S&T Keys is started, it will start S&T and configure gps as configured in the start panel (see "2.1.2 Options panel: Start"). Then you may enter a destination in S&T route planner panel, and press F5 key. This will start gps navigation (usually in fullscreen) as configured in "2.1.3 Options panel: Navigate". Using F4,F8 key (favorite destinations) or Home (navigate to your home) key are different ways of starting navigation similar as F5 key, without entering a destination in S&T route planner. You may use "Pause" or "Shift Pause" function to stop gps navigation when completed. The End key can also be used to easily clean the actual route, enter a new destination and continue navigation in the new added direction with minimal efforts.

Section 4: Informations For Advanced User

4.1 Favorite Destinations File Format

If you want to import many favorites destinations in a single shot, it could be very tedious to enter them one at a time using S&T Keys gui. The following section is explaining how to enter this information in S&T Keys configuration file. There is no direct way to import an address book in S&T Keys. But there is a workaround possible, that could be tedious and is for advanced user only. So let's do the hard work.
S&T keys stores all its settings in a file "keys.ini" that is usually located for Windows XP in a folder like this: "C:\Documents and Settings\Owner" where Owner is your user account name you used to login in Win XP.

WARNING: backup your original "Keys.ini" file first before trying to do any modifications to avoid corruption and configuration lost. Not following exactly the file format specified can crash S&T Keys later. So you should be prepared in case of a disaster. Close S&T Keys before attempting to modify the configuration file.

This file is in a text format and you can easily modify it to add your address list. To achieve this, you need a way to export your address book in a kind of text format. Usually "comma separated value" text format could be possible or similar. Fist take a look at your application software to see how you can export your address book to a text file. Then you will need to process this text file to a specific format. The favorites address list is located in the [Section3] section of the "keys.ini" file. One favorite address occupies one line with a format like this and must be located after [Section3] line in the file and before any other [Sectionx] line:

{Favorite Name}=xx0xx{flag}xx1xx{address}xx2xx{latitude}xx3xx{longitude}xx4xx

There are 5 fields in each line that you have to fill with your information. Each field is identified by {} characters in the line above. Just fill in (replace) the fields with your informations:

{Favorite Name}: name to identify your favorite location in the list when you browse it with S&T Keys.

{flag}: must be the character 1 if you want to search by address or character 0 if you want to search by latitude/longitude.

{address}: address of your favorite destination, separated by comma same as what is used when you enter it in the favorite address box.

{latitude}: latitude of location in decimal.

{longitude}: longitude of location in decimal.

IMPORTANT: Do not use spaces between the line and anywhere else except in the {address} field itself.

Example1:

Favorite location name "Dad" and at address (use 1 for the {flag}):
"128 baxter, new york,ny, united stated"

You will write this in [Section3] of "keys.ini":
Dad=xx0xx1xx1xx128 baxter, new york,ny, united statedxx2xxxx3xxxx4xx

Example2:

Favorite location name "Mom" and at location (use 0 for the {flag}):
40.71305,-73.42355 (lat,long)

You will write this in [Section3] of "keys.ini":
Mom=xx0xx0xx1xxxx2xx40.71305xx3xx-73.42355xx4xx

N.B. you should have noticed that in example 1, lat, long information has not been entered and in example 2 address has not been entered because they were not used, but they could be entered as well...

Here what will look like the "keys.ini" favorite section with these 2 favorites items (mine is ending with [Section 1], but it could be anything):

[Section3]
Dad=xx0xx1xx1xx128 baxter, new york,ny, united statedxx2xxxx3xxxx4xx
Mom=xx0xx0xx1xxxx2xx40.71305xx3xx-73.42355xx4xx
[Section1]

Once S&T Keys is restarted, you will see a favorite location list similar as the following Figure 14.

Figure 14

You can verify also in Figure 15 & 16 each favorite entry in the gui.

The new S&T Keys 2010 v3.55.4 (23 March 2010) release version is here (see download below: zip file is including both application and source code. Or you may also update directly from S&T Keys "Option" menu or by right-clicking S&T Keys in the system tray. Compiled with Autoit v3.2.10.0).

This is the first S&T Keys 2010 official release version. This version has major issues corrections as compare to the beta version. All beta version users (beginning with version 2.x.x) should upgrade with this version.

What's new:

1- Support for Autoroute 2010 english version has been added. This could be configured from the options menu of S&T Keys. Once configured, the application name will change to "AR Keys.exe", but it is exactly the same application.

2- Source code is now available

Corrected issues:

1- Corrected some situations when gps is not detected correctly, so that keys behavior is better and not doing extra unnecessary work.

2- For hotkeys T,Q,S,H,P and F5, F8 (navigating), END, HOME, corrected a problem when sometimes the route was not recalculated from gps to the first stop (or start position).

3- The delete waypoint algorithm has been redesigned from scratch, because it failed sometimes to work correctly when gps was active and screen refresh rate was fast. The new algo is much more reliable and correctly delete waypoint even while navigating. This improve also the calendar mode that suffered a lot from this problem. It also corrected problems related to these hotkeys T,Q,S,H,P and F5, F8 (navigating), END, HOME.

4- Corrected a problem when user enter an unroutable destination in route planner (or through END, HOME, F8 functions as well), so keys stop its work gracefully to display an error message.

5- If S&T was configured to navigate in full screen, the previous version cannot correct the problem. This version can.

6- Shift PAUSE hotkey does not stop gps in some situations.

7- Text corrections in some message box.

8- In some situations, keys must exit and restart itself. In some situations, it was stopping but was unable to restart after.

9- In calendar mode, sometimes it was not able to set the stop date/time correctly.

10- There was a bug in the GPS icon search logic that was not working at all when S&T application was not occupying the full screen. This cause problem with F6 (insert pushpin at gps location) and F10 (find nearby around gps). This could cause for F6 function a pushpin to be set anywhere on the map instead of on the gps icon.

11- When internet connection is not available and user attempts to update S&T Keys through tray menu (or option menu), it is wrongly reporting that the current version is up to date.

Known issues:

1- For the moment, while navigating in fullscreen, the PgUp/PgDn buttons or the +/- touchscreen buttons cannot do the zoom increment as programmed in the options panel. It will work as expected when not in fullscreen. I did not find yet a way to solve this problem. In fullscreen, it will revert to the normal S&T zoom functions fix increment.

2- When a secondary window (find window as an example) is on S&T screen, all the S&T Keys hotkeys are disabled and this can confuse the operator a lot (worst some hotkeys will revert to S&T default key function like F1 key will now popup S&T help)...

3- In some rare situations, F1/F4 popup menus may get frozen blank on screen. Workaround added in this version...

4- If S&T is not occupying full desktop when not navigating and then you start navigating in fullscreen, using F6 (pushpin at gps location) and F10 (find nearby at gps location) may locate incorrectly gps icon. If not navigating in full screen, or when S&T occupy the full desktop, it will work correctly.

5- When trying to check for an update from tray menu or options menu, if program is up to date, a false message "Cannot get update information..." may be displayed. If there is an update, it will update correctly.

This is a patch release. It is just correcting some minor bugs that were left out by the first release.

What's new:

Corrected issues:

1- If S&T is not occupying full desktop when not navigating and then you start navigating in fullscreen, using F6 (pushpin at gps location) and F10 (find nearby at gps location) may locate incorrectly gps icon. The new S&T Keys 2010 v3.55.8 (28 August 2011) release version is here (see download below: zip file is including both application and source code. Or you may also update directly from S&T Keys "Option" menu or by right-clicking S&T Keys in the system tray. Compiled with Autoit v3.2.10.0).

This release brings some new features and corrects some minor bugs.

What's new:

1- Added a touch screen <F11> button to allow switching easily from full to normal screen mode without using a keyboard for touch devices (because many keys functions leave fullscreen mode alone). This avoid to open an On Screen Keyboard for this function.

2- Added <SHIFT><F6> toggle hide/show all puspins sets (also from touch screen menu). This allows to quickly remove all pushpins that could cause problems while navigating. The 1st time the function is used, it will hide all pushpins sets (if at least one is not already hidden), the 2nd time, if they are all hidden, they will all appear on screen.

3- Added fatal error logic that will give a controlled user message and log the error in the keys.ini file. This will help knowing what is the reason why S&T Keys could abort with a fatal error.

4- Added an option (in keys options panel) to control the fullscreen <PGUP>/<PGDN> (and also from the touchscreen +/- buttons) zooming behavior. They will revert to normal S&T -/= zooming (behavior of previous versions) keys (zoom incr is 10), or switch to normal screen mode to allow S&T Keys defined zooming step (as programmed from options menu) (new behavior).

5- Default Zooming step incr is now 2 instead of 5 to allow precise zooming steps as compared to S&T zooming steps (10).

Corrected issues:

1- For the moment, while navigating in fullscreen, the PgUp/PgDn buttons or the +/- touchscreen buttons cannot do the zoom increment as programmed in the options panel. It will work as expected when not in fullscreen. I did not find yet a way to solve this problem. In fullscreen, it will revert to the normal S&T zoom functions fix increment (a workaround has been added in this version when in fullscreen, S&T Keys will switch to normal screen and do the correct zoom increment. Users could press <F11> to return to fullscreen when done. This behavior could be configured in options menu).

2- Corrected last S&T file used startup issue when S&T keys attempts to run S&T with this option configured.

3- Corrected some S&T wrong registry initializations issues.

Known issues:

1- When a secondary window (find window as an example) is on S&T screen, all the S&T Keys hotkeys are disabled and this can confuse the operator a lot (worst some hotkeys will revert to S&T default key function like F1 key will now popup S&T help)...

2- On some systems (like UMPC), the new hide pushpins feature <SHIFT><F6> is not working correctly (this bug will be corrected in the next version).

3- In fullscreen navigation, <F2>/<SCRLCK> hotkey to minimize S&T may not work correctly (this bug will be corrected in the next version).

4- In fullscreen navigation, on screen menu buttons (F4/+/-) may be non responsive (this bug will be corrected in the next version).

The new S&T Keys 2010 v3.55.9 (13 September 2011) Bugs fix release version (see download below: zip file is including both application and source code. Or you may also update directly from S&T Keys "Option" menu or by right-clicking S&T Keys in the system tray. Compiled with Autoit v3.2.12.1).

This version is a bugs fix release and does not add any new features.

What's new:

Corrected issues:

1- On some systems (like UMPC), the new hide pushpins feature <SHIFT><F6> is not working correctly. A complete new algo is now used for this function and will be much more reliable from one platform to another.

2- In fullscreen navigation, <F2>/<SCRLCK> hotkey to minimize S&T may not work correctly.

3- In fullscreen navigation, on screen menu buttons (F4/+/-) may be non responsive.

Known issues:

1- When a secondary window (find window as an example) is on S&T screen, all the S&T Keys hotkeys are disabled and this can confuse the operator a lot (worst some hotkeys will revert to S&T default key function like F1 key will now popup S&T help)...

2- In some situations, S&T Keys may slow down S&T operation. This can be seen while dragging part of the map with a very slow refresh rate. One way to verify that S&T Keys is the cause of slowliness is to close it and see now if dragging the map goes much faster. Once it is detected that keys caused the slowliness, usually simply restarting S&T Keys may solve the problem.
