Need a free PC GPS software to record tracks

Hi all,

I found this site by luck and after going through it I decided to go for laptop gps rather than a gps unit.

Planning to buy ACER Aspire One this week, ordered Garmin Mobile PC with 20x receiver and going to work on a homemade mount

The thing which I can't find is a gps software to record my tracks during offroad. A big plus sign if i can upload Sat or Topo maps to it to show me where am I during the trip.

Is there something like that available?

Mobile PC will do all that for you.

Mobile PC records your tracks - TOOLS > Manage My Data > Tracks ... this allows you to save the active track to a named track so you can have multiple tracks saved by name, clear the active track to start a fresh one, view your saved tracks on the map and set some track options, like what to do if the track log gets full, how frequently you want track points to be recorded and whether to show the active track on the map as you proceed.

You can load topo maps into Mobile PC and switch between the road maps and topo maps whenever you want. You can buy topo maps from Garmin or you can get free ones from places like GPS File Depot.

The problem is I live in UAE and Garmin got only road maps, Ill check GPS file depot

You will have a problem getting maps for the UAE no matter what navigation software you choose. If there is a possibility of finding maps for your area on the internet, Garmin format gives you the best possibility. Your search engine is your friend.

Mobile PC has a very good world basemap. I have attached a screen capture of part of the UAE. This is from the world basemap in the North America version of Mobile PC. As you can see, it has some roads and cities showing on it. It is zoomed out so you can see what it looks like for a fairly large area.

Click the View Map tab to see what coverage is provided. On the coverage page you can click on the link to view the map interactively (pan, zoom).

Ive got road map for Garmin, I just need Topo maps
