I have City Navigator which is setup and map data for GPS18. I have a new computer with internal GPS. The disk is evidently damaged and will not install. Is there a way to get this progam moved from my old computer to the new one.

What doesn't install? You know that the map data would be locked to your GPS18 and would not display on you new computer using a different GPS.

When I in load the disk, I get message "please insert disk in drive" This leads me to believe that the disk is damaged. I contacted Garmin support,their instructions were to go to Run type in D:\setup.exe/ zgarmin It does not make a difference what command I use I get the same error. Insert disk in drive. My question is still the same, is there a way to move the program from my old computer to the new one.

Yes, you can move the Mapsource program and maps from the old computer to the new one but it requires knowing where the maps are stored, where to find all the entries you need in the registry on the old computer and how and where to put them into the registry on the new one. It requires serious technical knowledge and really good nerves.

ok since I do not have nerves of steel is there another way to get my Gobook 3 GPS working without returning to the US and buying another program. The San Felipe 250 is comming up and was anticipating using it for some chase access.

It sounds like your disk or reader is having problems. But to be sure, go to 'My Computer' and click on the DVD reader (with the disk inserted) and see if it gives you a list of files and folders.

There are instructions elsewhere on this site about getting MapSource on a new computer which I can't track down. It involves downloading and installing Garmin BaseCamp first Garmin: BaseCamp Updates & Downloads then the latest MapSource Garmin: MapSource Updates & Downloads. That will get you to a point that moving the map folder will be doable. Can you get that far?

Thanks, I had gotten that far but needed a Garmin map to get it to work. I finally found a site with the stuff I needed ( http://rwsmaps.griffel.se ). You might want to check it out. It seems that Garmin has a Trainer program that lets the Mapsource activate. By the way do you know how to get EnRoute to recognize the internal GPS, seems that it only looks for serial GPS or the USB

To use nRoute with other than a Garmin GPS, you need GPS Gate. It will convert the signal from the internal GPS to a Garmin signal nRoute can recognize.

Even if you get all the City Nav maps moved and Mapsource installed, the problem is still going to be that you are using a different GPS. City Nav maps are locked to the specific GPS unit.

BTW, I have run into this problem with DVD players. I've put the disk into a different player and it worked just fine!

I was able to get the Garmin nRoute installed and Garmin let me unlock Mapsource on my new computer. The other issue. My laptop is an Itronix Gobook 3 with a built-in GPS system. Is there a way to get nRoute to work with this system. I downloaded the trial version GPSGATE but it looks for USB or serial devices. I contacted them but they do not seem to have any support available.

The built in GPS should be a serial device. Check Device Manager to see if it is listed. If it is not serial, see if Itronix has a driver to provide a serial (COM) output from the device. GPS Gate will work with any serial GPS it can find.

I think you are misunderstanding what is going on. Connection to the internal GPS is not by some sort of magic. The navigation program only has a limited number of ways it can get the data from the receiver:

- Bluetooth
- USB
- Serial (COM) port

In order for your internal GPS receiver to be useful there must be some way for it to make the data available to the navigation software. It will most likely show up as a virtual COM (serial) port.

If GPSGate is not finding an active GPS data stream, that means you need to do something to enable the GPS receiver ... to make it become active and to show up on the computer in a way the navigation software can receive the data from it.
