In Windows the shortcut keys to do screen captures are:
- to capture the entire screen: press the PrtScn key
- to capture the active window: press Alt-PrtScn
This will capture the screen or the active window and place it in the Clipboard. Then you can paste it into a program to edit and/or print. You could paste it into Windows Paint or Microsoft Word or IrfanView, for instance.
I have always had mixed success with the Windows built in screen capture. It probably works for me less than half the time. It frustrates me. So I use the free version of
Gadwin PrintScreen. It is much more reliable. It lets you assign the shortcut key you want to use to launch it. It lets you outline any portion of the screen you want to capture. And it lets you tell it where to save the captured graphics file and how to name it.
I have used other screen capture programs but I like this one best for my purposes.
